#3DPrintMyGift Challenge: Santa's New Sleigh

To celebrate the first-ever 3D Printing Day, help GE design a new and improved sleigh for Santa.

This year, Santa and his elves are eagerly awaiting another holiday season. When one man has to deliver gifts to children all over the world, he needs a state-of-the-art sleigh. Enter 3D printing. With the world population expected to increase one-third by 2050, the question becomes: how can Santa deliver more gifts, to more people, in the same amount of time?

In recent years GE scientists and engineers have helped design a new sleigh for Santa, equipped with new technologies to aid him in his global travels. This year, GE is turning to you for help.

Why GrabCADrs?


GE has recently seen great success crowdsourcing new designs for aircraft engine parts to the GrabCAD community. So why not turn here again to design something special for the holidays: Santa's new sleigh.

Be a part of GE's 3D Printing Day


The winning sleigh design will be turned into an ornament that we'll use as a prize for part of GE's #3DPrintMyGift holiday campaign. Your design will be printed and shipped to fans around the country as a gift for the holiday season. Plus, GE will promote your name and design across their social media pages. Pretty cool, huh?

Requirements

  • The winning sleigh must:
    - Provide STL version.
    - No variations of color in a single part.
    - Fit within 50mm x 50mm x 50mm.
    - Minimum wall thickness = 2mm.
    - Focus on Manufacture and production vision.
    - All other Requirements should be used as ways to push the bounds of 3D printing.

  • Participants are encouraged to include:
    - Extra renderings.
    - Description of how it addresses each factor, below.
    - Native CAD file formats.

  • Manufacture and production vision: Must utilize 3D printing as the primary means for sleigh design. Designs will be printed in plastic.

  • Aesthetics & Aerodynamics: Santa has to go fast, ride in style and impress Mrs. Claus! Designs that find ways to reduce drag, while maintaining a high degree of style will be viewed most favorably.

  • Functionality: What new functions can you build into Santa’s sleigh? Check out the sleigh’s current functionality.

  • Size & Weight: With more toys to deliver every year, Santa is running out of room in his sleigh. The sleigh must be lightweight, maintaining structure while shaving mass using 3D printing advantages. Also must be light enough to hang as an ornament on a tree!

  • Sustainability: Sleigh design must be environmentally friendly, which is an advantage of 3D printing. For example, the design is made from recyclable plastic.

  • Ergonomics and safety: Must provide maximum comfort to Santa during his long travels.

Rules

  • See Official Rules for details. Contest opens on November 13, 2013. Must submit at least one Entry by November 24, 2013 at 11:59PM UTC to be eligible. Must be 18 years of age or older to participate. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited.

  • THESE OFFICIAL RULES SUPERSEDE ANY OTHER RULES AND TERMS & CONDITIONS ON THE WEBSITE OF SPONSOR OR GRABCAD.

  • By registering for the competition, you accept the conditions stated in these official rules (http://blog.grabcad.com/3d-printing-day-2013-terms-service/), agree to be bound by the decisions of the judges and warrant that you are eligible to participate in the competition. If you do not accept all of these official rules, then please do not register for the competition. We recommend that you print a copy of these official rules for your future reference.

  • Entrants will create a 3D printable sleigh using the design and specification information (“Design and Specs”) on the Competition Website. Entrants can use any CAD software to create the design but the Entry must be submitted as an STL file.

  • The top ten (10) Entries will be selected based on Performance Criteria and Design and Specs (defined herein and also set forth on the Competition website). The top ten (10) Entries will receive prize awards (described herein).

  • The Challenge starts on November 13, 2013 and ends on November 24, 2013. Final announcement is separate from Competition Period dates.

  • Judging - Entries will be analyzed and evaluated by a panel of (5) five judges (the “Jury”) comprised of experts from GE and GrabCAD. The Entries will be analyzed and evaluated based on the identified Performance Criteria and Design and Specs set forth on the Competition Website. The top ten (10) Entries that meet the Performance Criteria and Design and Specs will be selected as prize winners.

  • Tag your entries with "3D2013" to participate. This tag is added automatically by submitting through the Challenge "Submit Entry" button. Entries may take some time to appear on the public Challenge entries page.

Prizes

Your design will be featured as a prize for part of GE's #3DPrintMyGift campaign on December 3. You'll also win a 3D Print of your sleigh, a GrabCAD shirt and notebook.

    @reza and @dragan Sorry not a computer :) GrabCAD notebook: solid outer cover (1,75mm ca 131x211mm, closed) with 90 sheets offset 80g paper (125x205mm) and flat elastic closing band. GrabCAD Logo on front and ribbon to mark your pages.

    I'd like to encourage all GrabCADrs to incorporate stories along with their entries. It makes the model more compelling and is a place for you to discuss any "tech" that helps with the Requirements. Keep up the holiday fun!
