I knew GrabCAD 3D printing challenge had something to do with Shapeways! My teacher showed me 4 days ago, their 3D printer is so sick. At their site you have 3D printed art; Animaris Geneticus Parvus #7
a must watch!

I don't know if it's possible, but can't you guys on GrabCAD gives us the maximum dimensions of the bounding box for the model? You know, like: width/height/depth maximum sizes allowed?
I believe it's a better approach to model an object based on the maximum size allowed, than to scale down the original object, which can cause some walls to become extremely thin and break, and -oops- to the trash goes our model.

Leandro, I thought this information was given at http://www.shapeways.com/materials/white_strong_flexible

@Leonardo Fernandes thank you for pointing that out. Maximum dimensions are 80x80x80mm.

It's great that this information has been posted. That site has the best overview of setup and printing I've ever seen. Thanks!

Wall thicknesses and such are explained here in case anyone missed it. http://www.shapeways.com/tutorials/design_rules_for_3d_printing This is a great info page on what can and can't be done.

Jordi van Es: Yes mate, the maximum size of the object Shapeways can/will print is explicit in that link. However GrabCAD may impose, for numerous reasons, its own rules on the maximum size the challenge winner's object may be printed. And as already answered, that's what happens.
Kaspar Kiis: Thanks for the information. On a small note: it's Leandro, not Leonardo ;)

I uploaded a model of a ABB Arm which can be assembled after printing each part. Is it allowed to arrange the parts in a cube so it would fit the size 80x80x80?
which is the minimum distance between individual parts?

This is my entry :)

@Andrei, yes it is allowed to be assembled of different parts as long as it fits to 80x80x80mm cube.

I updated my robotic arm ABB Robotic Arm for 3D print
I rescaled and arranged the parts to fit in the required space. I have also seen the videos from the 3D print parts. They are flexible so my "fastening" should work , in order to assemble the parts after printing

When will week 8 be launched?
Kaspar Kiis about 1 year ago
Very shortly
Andrei D about 1 year ago
well I would say it was not fair. I checked the moment when the time was over(I think 8 or 9 AM GMT +2 , my time) an I had 10 more likes then the awarded model. So I don't know why likes after the "0" moment were counted. So I consider this a big bullshit.and even more, the awarded model has 430mm length. so please consider this as a complaint to the "bending" of rules

We double checked from our database and by the time challenge for week 7 ended Halo Magnum for 3D Print had 58 "likes" and ABB Robotic Arm for 3D print had 45 "likes". Sudhir Gill is winner of the challenge.
GrabCAD can guarantee that all the "likes" are counted correctly. Still we are open to your recommendations how to improve this challenge as we think it is nice thing to have in our site.
The first 3D printed models have arrived to our office and will be sent out to the winners: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=421969031152463&set=a.145215418827827.27235.138222049527164&type=3&theater
