One of Europe's largest sealant manufacturers, Krimelte, is looking to develop an innovative sealant applicator for their standard cartridge. The purpose is to achieve an aesthetic and even seal. Such a perfect seal can hardly be achieved while using sealant applicators available on the market today.
The motivation behind this challenge comes from the simple fact that:
It is extremely difficult to caulk joints without soiling the neighbouring surfaces while achieving a beautiful seam at the same time. Usually this is done by masking the neighbouring surfaces with tape, caulking the joint, removing the excess caulk with a spatula and then removing the protective tape.
However most professionals can apply this caulk in one pass (without tape) by moving the caulking gun with constant speed and applying suitable pressure on the trigger/handle of the gun. It is difficult to achieve for most non-professionals.
We want you to design something simple and handy to use.
One of our first ideas is to use peristaltic pump principle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPNRwhVcOr8&feature=related
There could be a small wheel(s) running on the surface that regulates the amount of sealant dosed.
Applicator should be small, compact and easy to use
Attaches to standard 310ml caulk cartridge with GL15 thread
Typical output 9-15 ml of caulk per running meter
Parts in contact with sealant should have easy access for cleaning
Parts in contact with sealant should be easily replaceable
Applicator needs to function without any power or pneumatic source
Must give out even amount of seal without depending on how fast the applicator is actually moving
Winning design will be chosen based on the design and functionality
The competition is open to everyone
Team entries are welcome
You can submit several designs
Only models uploaded to GrabCAD library will participate in the competition
Tag your model with “krimelte”
Privately uploaded models need to share access to jaan.puusaag@krimelte.ee, meelis.klimov@krimelte.ee and kaspar@grabcad.com
Privately uploaded models will be made public after the competition deadline
Models can be done in any CAD software as long as a STEP or IGES files are uploaded
Competition winner will be announced in GrabCAD’s blog

interesting challenge. Will try to do atleast one submission.
Nicolas about 1 year ago
I agree with Tobias... do it's possible to get a 3D model of the cartridge? (or at least dimensions)
Tobias Mattsson about 1 year ago
Yeah, was just about too ask about that, would be good to know all the sizes of the old product for development of the new. Thats just common sense.
Doug Davey about 1 year ago
This looks like fun ... will have to have a go.
Must it be a throw away?
Viktor Lightwind about 1 year ago
Interesting, i´ll have to do it!

yes baby...now this is another TRUE challenge ....compaired to others

We need silicone gun model or at least dimensions...
Damian Lesniak about 1 year ago
Are there any "battery based" solutions acceptable?
For example 2-3 x AA or AAA.
Ghioca Claudiu about 1 year ago
From my understanding no....you can't Damian ....requirement is I quote: "Applicator needs to function without any power or pneumatic source" that means no electricity....only mechanical...please corect me if i am wrong
Hevi about 1 year ago
Ghioca Claudiu is right...
Damian Lesniak about 1 year ago
Yeahh... that's of course clear sentence... but comparing to they approach of using the mechanism base on peristaltic pomp idea (which require power supply) I just asked to be sure.
Kaspar Kiis about 1 year ago
Unfortunately there is no CAD models available. However we will give you all the related dimensions shortly.
Ghioca Claudiu about 1 year ago
a pump can be actioned by hand ....we just need to find a way to keep the design inside the requirements....but that's going to be hard....
Kaspar Kiis about 1 year ago
By clicking on ''Download specification'' you will get dimensions for cartridge.
Tobias Mattsson about 1 year ago
Good job Kaspar, thats what i needed.
Hevi about 1 year ago
Can we get some dimension for existing solution?

Sealant applicator
This it's my replica of a sealant applicator.
I tried to upload it trough this challenge but the internet connection was bad and I couldn't make this possible.
You can donwload it from this link and use it as a starting base.

Here you can download my model of 310 ml Plastic Cartridge
I hope this model will be useful.

These one are great :)

One question - we should redesign whole applicator or only some part of it?
L. J. Smee about 1 year ago
Hey guys, when I started to model the cartridge I couldn't find any of those in the library (otherwise I wouldn't have done it).
Two hours later I come back here just to discover other people had the same idea...
Check it out: <a href="http://grabcad.com/library/cartridge-_reference_krimelte" rel="nofollow">KRIMELTE cartridge</a>
Emil Pop about 1 year ago
Peristaltic pump only works with very liquid fluids, not the case of the sealant.
Classic push pump is needed here, it only needs a more ergonomic manner of design.
Hevi about 1 year ago
@J. Smee - great work :)
L. J. Smee about 1 year ago
@Hevi: Thanks a lot!
@Emil Pop: Check out what wiki tells about peristaltic pumps:
They are in fact appropriate for thick liquids! The problem is: Is the suction great enough to pull the whole cylinder of liquid? I even thought about having a twin peristaltic pump which pulls the liquid at the tip and presses air in from the back.
Then I decided to think of something different... Good luck everyone!

Why I can't submit my entry through this challenge?
If I click Upload model, the site crashes and shows the message: "Sorry, but something went wrong."
It's my internet conection bad or the GrabCAD servers are crackin' down?
Hevi about 1 year ago
NO. It's website :) I have same problem. I started uploading my models yesterday but still the same problem.
Alex Moiceanu about 1 year ago
Ok.thanks Hevi for your answer.
Kaspar Kiis about 1 year ago
We are currently fixing the uploading problem. Should be back to normal soon. Thank you for your patience.
Kaspar Kiis about 1 year ago
Upload problem is fixed now.

I would personally love to have one of these new applicators if it works :)
Many times I have put on sealant then had to remove and redo it because of my sloppy work.
Kaspar Kiis about 1 year ago
Very interesting results so far. 12 days to go! Please make sure all the private results are shared to jaan.puusaag@krimelte.ee, meelis.klimov@krimelte.ee and kaspar@grabcad.com
Kira about 1 year ago
Hi, i have a question, does anyone know the viscosity of the sealant? Part of my design is to hopefully maximize flow rate with minimum driving force.
Thanks in advance!
Meelis Klimov about 1 year ago
Usually the viscositys of sealants fall into a range of 60 000 - 90 000 mPas
Kira about 1 year ago
Really appreciated!

I got some upload issue - when I edit my entrie there are 2x same step file but I think they are bad; they stoped at 75% when I was rying to upload them :)
Kasper - I need your help :D

@Hevi it is ok now.

Hello, there's no download option in my entry. Now you can't even see it because page with my entry doesn't work (you can only see "Sorry, but something went wrong"). Could you do something with this? Thanks
Hevi about 1 year ago
@Kaspar - Thank you. Now I think that everything is OK.
Kaspar Kiis about 1 year ago
@projectds please upload your entry again to your profile with "krimelte" tag and I will add it to the entries. We will definitely not miss it off from the entries. Send me a private message if you have any problems.
