Lagoa Render Wars Challenge

GrabCAD, meet Lagoa. Lagoa, meet GrabCAD. To celebrate our newly-minted friendship, we are challenging you to get your creative hat on. Take total design liberty to hack and tear apart this RC truck and then render the design that is the envy of all the neighborhood kids. Play nice, now!

What is Lagoa?

Lagoa is the only true web-based platform for 3D rendering and visualization. Lagoa offers an intuitive environment for the production of photorealistic images for visual prototyping, creative projects and marketing - without the need for expensive hardware or installation of software, Lagoa runs 100% in the browser.

The Challenge

Here’s a model of an RC truck that we want you to pimp the heck out of. Make it your own. There are three options for modding your car:

1. Open your model in the GrabCAD Lagoa app.
Rotate and scale assembly parts without leaving your browser, then render.
2. Add curated assets from Lagoa artists and engineers.
You can use assets from Lagoa inside your scene by selecting “File”-”Import Asset” while in the app. Build your 3D scene with new assets and render.
3. Want to really step up your game? Modify the CAD file before you render.
Download the model to your desktop along with any GrabCAD Library models you want to use (with proper permission and attribution) and modify the RC Truck. Add a new part, change existing part or create your own assembly using your favorite 3D modeling tool. Import back into GrabCAD Workbench and 'Open with Lagoa' to render.

You will be judged by the experts at Lagoa and GrabCAD on the quality of your render and the toy experts at Mega Bloks on the fun factor.

The Process


1. Sign up for a free GrabCAD Workbench account.
2. Download the model from the Challenge page and any other models you want to use.
3. When it's ready to render, upload in a new Workbench project.
3. In that project, select the file and choose “Open in Lagoa” in the 'Open with' drop down menu.
4. Apply textures, lighting, backgrounds and manipulate the model to your hearts content.
5. Choose 'Download All' when you're finished and upload it as a Library model via this Challenge page.

The Winner

You will be judged on the quality of your render. Take risks! We’re not looking for conventionality here!

Selection Process

Submissions will be evaluated by a panel of Lagoa, Mega Bloks and GrabCAD judges to select the top finalists. The winner will be announced latest by March 9, 2014.

Requirements

  • You must include:
    - One or more renderings of the RC truck model
    - The RC truck CAD file (modified or original)

  • You are encouraged to include:
    - A description of your model modifications

  • Submission guidelines:
    - The final render must be made in Lagoa
    - No additional software may be used for the rendering component of the challenge
    - The RC truck must be prominently featured in the final render

  • The winning design will be:
    - Original
    - Inspired
    - Demonstrative of Lagoa’s capabilities

  • The competition is open to everyone. Multiple entries are acceptable. Team entries are welcome - prize will be transferred to team leader. Participants may only win one prize per Challenge.

  • Tag your entry with “RCTRUCK” when uploading to GrabCAD. If you submit through the "Submit entry" button, this should be added automatically. Only entries with valid tag will participate. Only entries uploaded to GrabCAD through the "Submit entry" button on this Challenge page will be considered an entry.

  • By entering this competition, you 1. Warrant that the work is your original work. 2. To the best of your knowledge, it is not, and has not been in production or otherwise previously published or exhibited. 3. Neither the work nor its use infringes the intellectual property rights (whether a patent, utility model, functional design right, aesthetic design right, trade mark, copyright or any other intellectual property right) of any other person.

  • Applicants are not entitled to any compensation or reimbursement for any costs. The applicant’s participation shall not constitute employment, assignment or offer of employment or assignment.

  • The awarded participant is solely liable for the payment of all taxes, duties and other similar measures if imposed on the reward pursuant to the legislation of the country of his/her residence, domicile, citizenship, workplace, or any other criterion of similar nature.

  • We will release the finalists at least one week before the final announcement to give the Community an opportunity to support for their favorites and voice any concerns. The jury will take these into consideration when picking the final winners. This new addition is based on feedback from you!

  • Lagoa and Mega Brands retain the right to promote and publicize entrants and their design work.

  • Only public entries will be considered. Any private submissions will be made public at the Challenge deadline.

  • Winning designs will be chosen based on the rules and requirements. The Challenge ends on January 9, 2014 (11:59pm UTC). Finalists will be announced by February 9, 2014.

    Totally! Using Lagoa's asset upload system, you can upload a texture to your project, then import that project into your scene (use the File->Import menu option). Once in there you can assign a material to use the texture and then apply that material! :)

    so we have in Lagoa, like it says on https://grabcad.com/toolbox/lagoa :
    2 hours of render time per month,
    1 render session?

    I dont know what this 1 render session means
    and 2 hours is counted everytime anything is renderinvx

    for the time being the biggest challenge is my wi-fi connection :P
    i have spend 2 hrs on it n till now just able to download the model n upload in grab cad work bench now connecting to rendering platform really its a challenge for me for time being

    @Konrad - 1 render session relates to how many browser tabs you can be running the GC Lagoa solution in at the same time. The 2 hours resets every month and you can control when you are rendering.

    @Devi - I think you will be impressed by the rendering speed even on a poor internet connection. Downloading the file will be much slower than rendering. Good luck with your entry.

    @Seghler You don't need a lot of bandwidth to render in Lagoa! We've demoed our app on a plane before with great results. Once you're past uploading your model, you should be good to go. Give it a try :)

    Re: Custom Textures

    What are you trying to do exactly with custom textures? If you would like to apply one to your model, you can go to File -> Import Asset to add a 2D image to your scene. Then if you select the object and go to Material -> Diffuse -> Diffuse, you can add a basic diffuse material to your object. Select the diffuse material and go down to reflectance - to the left of the colored square there will be a small icon that looks like a mountain with a plus sign on the top left. Click that to add an image to the material. :)

    250MB. You can split up a single file into multiple ones, and recombine them in a single scene, to get past this if you have issues. You can also upload zip files.

    Thanks, I uploaded a SLDASM part that is about 42MB and it is not loading in the 3D viewer or into Lagoa, I also made an IGES that is about 26MB and am still having a problem. This little assembly is also more then my little mini mac can handle as I can barely open it now on my computer in SW.

    Try waiting a bit and rotating the camera/zooming out. A lot of times the file will import but it will be either too large, too small, or not aligned with the center of the scene. It could also just be taking awhile for the file to load, so give it a minute or so. :)

    Thanks Anastasia Larri but I just missed it. :( I have let my files attempt to load to Lagoa over night and nothing I was able to get the truck to load earlier and an initail scene but I made a new assembly for a great scene to render but may have went a little overboard. It isn't that I don't see my model, the model never even loads it just sits at the loading screen.

    According to the poll started on the 19th of Feb by Lagoa. My entry , Thomas's entry and Stefan's entry was in the top three places.

    And I was pretty upset to see my entry in the fourth place. I think I pretty much used every feature in Lagoa renderer expect for few which clearly shows the capabilities of Lagoa. And that my entry has originality and creativity. I haven't modified RC truck to look like out of the world vehicle though.

    I would like if you could elaborate on the statement "It's not as refined as some of the others but there is good effort here"

    So I can think of particiapting for more competitions in future :)

    If all other competitors to think this desicion is fair I will talk about this no more.

    @Grabcad- Please reconsider your final desicion.

    When I got home yesterday I found a shirt and hot wheels mega bloks in the mail! I was holding them up as my wife and kids pulled up with a big a smile in my face - she asked if I was sure I was 35 because I act like I am 5. The boys loved putting the car together and it was hard for me to let them keep it.
