Show off your skills and solve real design problems
Kyron, a 14 year old boy who has Muscular Dystrophy and lives in Florence, Massachusetts, has asked ModVic to Steampunk his Quantum Q6 Edge wheelchair.
ModVic wants the GrabCAD Community to brainstorm and submit their Steampunk modifications! Using the CAD model in the specifications, create a Steampunk version that a teenager would be happy to cruise around with friends. Making Kyron's wheelchair uniquely special will be a great icebreaker for him. Kyron will be the coolest kid on the block!
Steampunk is now sweeping the nation appearing in movies such as Hugo and Sherlock Holmes, bestselling books on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Also – Newell Turner, Editor and Chief at House Beautiful, just deemed Steampunk to be the next big design trend. Why does Kyron need it? -- Kyron loves steampunk design and wants his wheelchair to reflect his unique style and start conversation with others.
What is the goal? -- Reimagine Kyron's Q6 Edge wheelchair from Pride Powered Mobility. ModVic will be modifying an existing wheelchair to make it steampunk with some found objects and details that reflect this style. They need your concept ideas to inspire their search for vintage finds and for the final design. The steampunk wheelchair should retain the functionality and movement of a powered wheelchair.
Detail level -- Sketch of design ideas, design brief, and concept model.
File types required -- STEP and rendering.
Other formats are a plus -- Native CAD.
Multiple entries accepted.
Entry type -- Public entries only.

Okay, sorry for the technical issues. Our second pro bono Challenge on GrabCAD is ready to start. We are excited to be offering our GrabCADrs to help Kyron get the steampunk wheelchair of his dreams! Feel free to ask questions and post preliminary design ideas to get things going. Thank you to our Jury and Community Advisors for volunteering their time. We know you'll have some fun designs to share.
Matthieu Lemaître over 10 years ago
the specification file is a keyshot VR, that mean there is a 3D model of that render
you aren't allowed to share it, or is it just because it won't be of any use because we just have to say ideas and make approximate drawings?
Alexander Papadopoulos over 10 years ago
@3DNag we couldn't get the 3D model. As you said we are going for approximate design.I can suggest you to use the images from specification files as reference for front, top and side view.
Matthieu Lemaître over 10 years ago
well it look like that VR was made from left side with a render each 24°, so other sides aren't exactly in a pic (rear is close from it tho)
but i should be able to manage it ^^
Sara Sigel over 10 years ago
Can't wait to see your design ideas @3DNag :)
Adrien Liotard over 10 years ago
I love Steampunk so I'm very excited to participate in this challenge! But I wonder if there are some geometrical constraints that we should follow ? (for example can we change the wheel's diameter or the chassis height ?). And can you post a proper blueprint please, because I think it would be very helpful for everyone :)
Abhijeet over 10 years ago
@Adrien: Posting a blueprint is not possible and it should not be when we are looking for creative ideas from you. A beautiful design with approximate dimensions is something we are looking for. All the best. :)
Matthieu Lemaître over 10 years ago
did you have a pic of what the screen on the command can display?
the only one is found is here http://imgc.classistatic.com/cps/poc/120324/241r1/4733cd5_27.jpeg and it's pretty small
Tan Wei Kok over 10 years ago
Steampunk. Wow... nice. I love Victorian style copper and brass designs.
Matthieu Lemaître over 10 years ago
well i'm more of a cyberpunk guy as this can tell 3dfx voodoo stingray idea ^^
but i'll try to get into it

Isn't that a little... harsh?
William over 10 years ago
Awesome challenge, such a big project for such little time that would be my only concern........ In saying that would it be possible to use other models or parts of them from the GrabCAD library>? if this was the case I could see more peps entering this Pro-Bono....
William over 10 years ago
Hi Kyron what kind of stuff do you like about steampunk as there is so much that could be done here.........
Tomasz Szewczyk over 10 years ago
Anybody up for a Workbench project?
Bruce over 10 years ago
Our hope is that we can repurpose period objects and work them into the existing wheelchair design. Of course -- we want to make sure that we are not impeding the use of the wheelchair in any way with the modifications : ) Thanks.
William over 10 years ago
Hi Bruce, thank you for the Info on the period objects :P
Tan Wei Kok over 10 years ago
s@Bruce So the panel looking more on creativity than practicalty then?

Nice idea, Hope to see many differents entries, and good luck for the participants
@Tomasz Szewczyv I Sent you a message already
Alexander Papadopoulos over 10 years ago
@Tan Wei Kok see it as a concept design, don't bother with functionality at this point.

many of steampunk wheelchairs are already made. if any one does a model of the base unit could you share it please. it would make this a lot easier.
Brett over 10 years ago
1) Can you please elaborate on your fabrication allowances. Can we spec powdercoating , re-upholstering cushions, sheet metal work, thermoforming forming, new custum add ons ..etc.
2)Is the end result for this to be fabricated? Are we looking at doing a custom fitout on his actual wheelchair or creative wacky concept renderings? Thanks
Tomasz Szewczyk over 10 years ago
Brett. spot on questions, we are trying to make a collaborative effort with the emphasis on engineering. Hit me up on private if you want in. Also anyone else up for workbenching the project in a team please get in touch. There is a couple of us but we still have spacesv
Tiago Bárbara over 10 years ago
I loved the project, but I won't be working on it unless there is a base to work off.
Cheers
Bruce over 10 years ago
Yes -- please let the reimagination and creativity flow -- but any design modifications we do should not interfere with functionality or operability of the wheelchair. Thanks.

Based on questions from the group, I updated the requirements to clarify the level of detail needed and goals of the Challenge. See the updated requirements, below and in the Requirements section.

Tomasz Szewczyk over 10 years ago
"will be building a steampunk version" does that mean that he is building one ground up?
Also, I would like to know if the removability of the chair from the drivetrain is one of those functionalities we must maintain in our design
Sara Sigel over 10 years ago
@Tomasz It means we're modifying an existing wheelchair. I'll fix the text. Thanks for pointing that out! Do your best to maintain that functionality but it is more important to keep the movement of the wheelchair in mind.
Tan Wei Kok over 10 years ago
We are going to modify a power chair to Steampunk and it must still function like a wild Mustang. Sounds fun >) http://youtu.be/we2ltZlCZaw
Terry Stonehocker over 10 years ago
Can someone get us the tire size and or the rim size of the drive wheel? We can scale from that.
Tan Wei Kok over 10 years ago
@Terry Stonehocker You can get the base and wheel dimensions here: http://www.pridemobility.com/pdf/Brochures/Jazzy/Q6_Edge.pdf

Thanks @Terry and @Tan. If you create a base, it'd be very useful to share it with the group!
Also, please note that we have a translation in Spanish for this Challenge upon request. Leave a comment and we'll send it to you!

Great work @Terry! This should help anyone who was waiting for a base model to use for their entry: Q6 Power Base
Mark Holub over 10 years ago
what's the max load capacity for the base and about how heavy is kyron? i would normally use the average weight of a 14 year old boy+Factor of safety but with muscle degradation and and other factors i'm not sure. also, is there any equipment that he needs mounted to the chair? ie. oxygen system, etc. how much do these objects weigh? i wouldn't want the chair base to be overloaded and not move.
Mark Holub over 10 years ago
i can't build a whole new design in 17 days. i'm good but not that good. however i would recommend an aesthetic steam drive on the drive wheel, and i would recommend that we know what we have to haul before we throw 300 lbs of extra stuff on a power chair base. if anyone needs help with ideas just let me know.
Abhijeet over 10 years ago
@Mark: you dont need to build a whole new design. All we want is a model that can satisfies the requirement of a powered wheel chair and its functionality. Get your ideas on to make 3D models.
m.h.m over 10 years ago
it is really difficult
Sara Sigel over 10 years ago
@m.h.m What are you having trouble with for this Challenge?
Tan Wei Kok over 10 years ago
No more Keyshot, so now is full Steam ahead for Kyron's project =)
Abhijeet over 10 years ago
@m h m : let us know what difficulty you are facing and we'll try to sort it out. We are looking more participation in such competitions.
Bruce over 10 years ago
Great job everyone on the Steampunk Wheelchair designs so far! The judges are really excited and inspired by your creativity and wanted to share which details and Steampunk design elements we love.
- The chimneys feature by JSE
- The studs, look of vine in silver, way the wheels connect and hubcaps by Gary.
- The brass fittings, maroon color, and brass, open wheels by Adrien.
One note about ways to improve your entry even more. This is basically Kyron's legs, so we have to focus on not letting the design interfere with the function. We like the designs that not only look cool and capture the Steampunk style, but also are designed for adaptability and keep the functional parts of the chair.
So in a sense, we can only do ‘superficial’ changes to the chair. Kyron is also due for a new chair in about 3 years and we would love the have the pieces be movable to the new chair. Thanks for all your work on this project : ) Bruce
Tan Wei Kok over 10 years ago
@Bruce Think you don't have to worry about that. My guess is most that join this Challenge don't mind you ultimately bash all our ideas into one. So long Kyron love and comfortable using it, think we are all happy for him =)
Bruce over 10 years ago
Thanks Tan Wei Kok : ) Yes -- we love elements from all -- so we'll have the best of all worlds!
