One of leading virtual puzzle games developer BigPlayAR needs your help to design a new openable compass puzzlebox used in one of their games. This is super cool and interesting opportunity to leave a mark on the virtual world of puzzle games and why not to send your friends to solve. All the animations are more than welcome but not compulsory!
Developing 3D puzzle box that opens by spinning, moving, tilting or dragging different parts on it in result to access the compass.
Big PlayAR has got number of similar objects that must be created and expect winning artist to be available work under similar pay terms if interested.
Puzzlebox should look steampunk-science fiction style, similar to the pictures in the spec
Style should be slick and rich in detail
It should take an 8th grader no more than 10 minutes to solve and be fairly easy for those who are truly adept at puzzles
Make it really pretty and detailed, fun to zoom in and inspect
Design can be made in any software as long as STL file is provided.
Winning design will be chosen based on the rules
The competition is open to everyone
Team entries are welcome. In case of team win, prize money will be transferred to team leader who is solely responsible for splitting it among team members
You can submit several designs
Only models uploaded to GrabCAD library will participate in the competition
Only models uploaded through this challenge page here will participate in the competition

I have some questions :
must it be realistic ? will it be manufactured or only virtual.
I ask otherwise it shall be a science fiction mechanism or real.
The Puzzlebox is only virtual, so use your imagination :)
Thanks I will ... :-)
Hi Kaspar so it has to have no moving parts within the model?
I want know about wat its real plication.....plz give me a way to know about its aplication or function...suggest me by video or immage.....
@WILLIAM yes, there has to be moving parts on the puzzle box which by result of moving them will give you access to the compass.
@jaydeep it could be something similar to that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMl0qubWYsI&feature=related
By the way if you type in puzzle box in youtube you will get lot of inspiration. So good luck to you all!
Hi Kaspar thank you for the info now it is clear to my self what is required.
:)))
any specific dimension?
No specific dimensions.
Hi Kaspar
Does all mechanical parts that move have to work to precision?
example - a clock with a lot of moving gears that turn the time hands?
Thank you.
:)
William, allthough I am not in the jury off course I would say NO off course not, that is the real advantage of being virtual. The gearing you are talking about does not have to be precise (why should it be?) , no strenght calculations, you can make whatever shape/design you want now. I have for example very sharp pins in my design. But the nice thing is that noboy can injure himself.
John Huizingh good point
Thank's alot kasper
William, the system doesn't have to work to precision as it is just a fun game. In some cases it doesn't even need to comply with the law of nature :)
So are we designing a compass that is a puzzle in order to open? or a puzzle box that must be opened in order to get to the compass?
I was about to ask the same.
I think they want a box to keep the compass safe, though a compass with an opening mechanism could also be interesting.
Michael makes a good point, also if it is a puzzle box that you open to view the compass would you like us to outline how it is solved? actually should we outline how to solve it anyway?
It is like an assembly game, so the player spread all parts on a virtual space and begin to assembl all components ??
Hi folks, great to see the questions. We want a puzzlebox that opens to display a compass. Our game makes use of compass, in real life scavenger hunts, and we'd like to have a first puzzlebox hurdle to get into it.
The winning design will exist as a virtual object, players will make use of it often throughout the game.
Game is played in real life using mobile devices in augmented reality space.
I'll not again, please try and aim for steampunk design aesthetic, as we'll be looking for 8-12 more objects and hope to have winning designer continue with look and feel.
John / Michael, it needs to be solvable - to a real puzzle expert it should be super easy, but to say someone at 8th grade level, making them figure it out is great.
Again this is seen in AR space and must be manipulated by spinning puzzle around, then moving it with finger swipes, touches, taps etc.
to see what I mean about AR space
Steampunk aesthetics call for some serious texturing, but you are only asking for STL files, how important are the textures we put in our models?
One other question; The puzzle box compass will be used throughout the game, the user must solve the puzzle every time the compass is needed? Or the puzzle is solved only once?
The puzzle box compass will be used throughout the game, the user must solve the puzzle every time the compass is needed? Or the puzzle is solved only once?
Interesting, I doubt they'd have to put it back together, but we may reconstitute it by magic.
Steampunk does require texturing - metal glow, lighting etc. Meanwhile we operate in a relatively low poly environment... 5-15K kind of stuff - we will jump from STL to Unity 3D.
That's part of the challenge, how we'll choose a winner, I can say it is an important skill, because we are hoping to have similar devices created by the winner.
So I am wanting to add some raised designs on my project, should this be done in the rendering with bump maps or do they need to be part of the model itself. refer to my sword where most of the design is just a bump map on the hilt guard.

hi Kasper....
Your Require the perfect steampunk type puzzle......
??????
Jaydeep, it could be as perfect as you like it to be. However it needs to comply with the requirements.
Can I upload an AutoDesk Inventor file or does it need to be a spacific program file.
It needs to be STL file. You can easily export it from Inventor.
i have no team, how could i get the prize ?
You can be a one person team by yourself.. You will get the prize...
the prices is too less , may be 1000 usD will consider and more ppl to enter the game!!

My Entry for the steampunk compass puzzle is below.
It is called the Orb Compass, and works with twisting knobs, rotating dials and a simple maze that uses gravity to allow a rubber ball to finds its way out and open the compass cover.
Its very detailed, with a cool internal mechanical mechanism.
I have uploaded the model, but have not seen it listed yet. Could the organizers please check.
Good luck to all!

It often takes a few weeks or more to get the results at least that has been the trend....
Hi all and sorry about the confusion. Can everybody see their entries now?
Hi, Kaspar Kiis when will be known the winners ?
yep, i see my entry.. thank you Kaspar.
But i wonder the announcement of the results as Marcus do. :))
how come it takes so long to pick a winner? it happened with the damixa challenge as well...
anyone know the result when ? :)
it is no closer than tuesday :))
I ask me why there are 2 models with 0 downloads ? I hope that this is not again damixa problem.
PS : I wish you a merry Christmas
i see only 1 model for steampunk compass challenge among your models. ıt says you have 64 models. ı think the others are hidden or sumthng. i had the same problem with a usual model.
