Design a FRESH and ORIGINAL soap pump for UMBRA
There are many soap pumps on the market – what will you do to make your Soap Pump stand out and drive sales? This challenge focuses on creativity, originality and design.
Here are few tips:
1. Consider the end user – should be easy to fill, should be able to operate with only one hand.
2. Think about your own experiences – are there any issues that annoy you or is there something that could make your experience using a soap pump more enjoyable?
3. Consider the reseller – are there any gaps in the market (could be price, material, features) that would be make it easier to for the reseller to sell?
4. Consider the environment the soap pump will live in – what are some of the items it will sit next to? How will it fit in? Can it be more space efficient?
5. Think about how it will be made – can you reduce the number of parts? Can you make it easier to assemble? What manufacturing techniques will you use? Is there a new method that will reduce costs? Umbra has expertise with the following manufacturing techniques: injection molding, metal forming, metal casting, compression molding (silicone or melamine), plastic blow molding, glass blowing, wood laminating/machining.
6. Consider where the trends will be one or two years from now – if you’re designing a derivative from our current collection, it’s too late.
7. What will make your design compelling/special?
8. Consider “cradle to grave” – what is the entire environmental impact of this item?
9. Umbra is sold into more than 120 countries worldwide – the design should have a global appeal.
Your entry must include:
• SolidWorks preferred. IGES, STEP, STL acceptable
• Rendering of your design preferred
• Calculations for soap capacity
Technical requirements:
Must hold a minimum of 12 fluid ounces
Not a must, but using a standard soap pump ‘engine’ makes it a lot easier to reach target costs (CAD file included)
Judging criteria:
Judging criteria will be based on achievement of accomplishing criteria listed above, including:
1. Deliver Umbra’s 5 Brand Promises: Modern, Original, Casual, Functional, Affordable
2. Be manufacturable at a reasonable cost
3. Demonstrate Innovation
4. Presentation (should include renderings and a video if it helps to describe your design)
Umbra sells soap pumps from $10-40 that stand out in the market place by delivering more than our competitors. The winning design will be a mix of innovation with an aesthetic that strikes an emotional chord, all delivered for a price that will attract end consumers.

Umbra was born over 30 years ago when a graphic designer by the name of Paul Rowan couldn’t find a window shade to hang in his new apartment window. So, he made one. And others liked it! He soon teamed up with friend Les Mandelbaum...and Umbra was born. It was from this first product that Umbra got its name - ‘umbra’ means ‘shade’ in Latin. Since that time, Umbra has grown to become the world leader of modern, original, casual and affordable design for the home, introducing designs that have broken the mold and creating entirely new categories in the home decor and gifting market.
Umbra’s products are available at over 30,000 retailers in more than 120 countries.

Very good challenge, definitely something I'll designed.

Do you have a preference on the bottle that will hold 12 ounces? I can make a pump, but unless I know what the bottle of choice is.... ya know? And what are the dimensions of the pump. I see that the file sent is just a shell of a pump and I'm not able to do anything to measure what you use.
Tufan Unal over 8 years ago
Is pump model in compressed phase? (lowest position) if yes please specify pump stroke.
Don B over 8 years ago
I printed a *.jpg picture out of the pump. I went into Solidworks to make my own *.sldprt file of the pump so I can insert it in the assembly. So far without any pump or bottle specs, I'm designing it all for my project. fun.....yaaaa
David Green over 8 years ago
Hi All - welcome to the challenge. We're really excited to see what you come up with! Thanks for your comments and questions so far. The pump engine is actually in the "up" position and would travel approximately 15mm down.

Not necessarty but, Is it possible for you to upload .sldprt version of pump?
David Green over 8 years ago
The .sldprt doesn't really have any more information - it's a real basic file, just to give overall shape and size.

Jamie you are right . Many idea is not original . I think you can make something completely special . I think my mind has two weeks to be original and doing research.
seghier khaled over 8 years ago
hello ; i have a nice idea but i don't have experience to design detailed parts
Ben Ewing over 8 years ago
Hi jamie, thanks for letting us know. As per our rules (above), designs that are not original are not eligible to win. It is always okay to get inspiration from existing designs, but make sure that yours is unique. Plus creating a new concept is half the fun!
Lucas Tejo over 8 years ago
I would like to know if necessarily pump, because i have some different ideas...
David Green over 8 years ago
Hi Lucas, thanks for your question, Using the pump engine is not required. We'd love to see new ideas!
Dmitriy Babych over 8 years ago
Hi! I would like to express my opinion about original of entered work. I'm tired of reading comments about the lack of originality of my work. I designed it without looking at the other projects and do not blame that there is something like that. I do not want to insult anyone.
Now about the projects. Almost all designs is an no original by a principle of work, the difference between them only in form of bottle. I talk about something like this https://grabcad.com/library/hand-soap-pump-2-0-1 Umbra "Quad-Engine" Economy Soap Pump Classic_Soap _Pump_ etc.
This Umbra Pump "Pinguin" seems like umbra soap dispenser https://priceraja.com/homestore/detail/251621-umbra-plastic-soap-dispenser-white-price-in-india
This umbra pumb 90% looks like pump from logo competition
Different only form Umbra double soap pump & http://santonit.ru/catalog/filter/00164/00003627/
And here is the man himself wrote that his work is a copy of the old soap dispenser Umbra soap pump- The New Older
What do you think about these works?
It would be better if you designing as well as you find flaws in the works!
Muhammed Çakar over 8 years ago
Dmitriy're right. I think it is not possible to make many changes in the pump models. But this does not mean that I would liken to bottle, the bottle made of.
Paul Andrew Santos over 8 years ago
Some guys don't have originality...
Valerie Yi Mei over 8 years ago
Hi, is it possible to show which part of the soap pump 'engine' is fixed? Is the outer ring fixed while the other two small cylinder in the middle move linearly? thanks.
dk over 8 years ago
@Valerie Yi Mei
Wondering the same here. I assumed the split-circle part was depressed inside the outer-most part, while the center hose-fitting piece remained in place.
Junior Little over 8 years ago
i think UMBRA should use the cheap and simple electronic heat sensor rather than mechanical type...
dk over 8 years ago
Also, does the outer ring need to be permanently clamped down, or only when it's pumped, or just held in the vicinity? I just tried with a pump at home and it pumps whenever the bottom tube end is submerged.
Edward Battistini over 8 years ago
Hey ! I have added my entry to the competition ! Good luck to all of us !
UMBRA COBRA
David Green over 8 years ago
Hi all, to answers some questions around the pump engine - the head of the pump snaps onto the most inner cylinder. When someone presses on the head, the split-circle part will go up and down with the inner cylinder. But at this stage, don't worry about it too much at details like this - we're really looking for big ideas that will resonate with consumers. Hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions.

Good evening,
I have the same question as Pedro: I posted my project in my GC profile on 13/12 at 23:30 but the contest is designated as "Passed" which is contrary to the competition definition.
Please let me know if my entrie can still be considered valid for the challenge.
Thanks in advance.

Hi all, I took a look it does appear that you were able to get your models in before the deadline. My apologies for the error on our part. Nicolas, Piotr, Pedro & Lucas, your entries have been accepted and will be considered by the judges. Thanks for participating in the Umbra 'Pump It' challenge!
Ben Ewing over 8 years ago
That goes for anyone else as well. If you completed an entry before the deadline, but were unable to submit your design, please email me the link to the model (tagged with 'pumpit') at ben@grabcad.com and I will make sure that it is considered. Make sure that this entry is sent to me before 3 PM UTC on December 15th, so that our judges can review it. As always, let me know if you have any questions.

I want to share with you the theme of the competition was made, separated into several categories.
But the firm has been a little hasty about it. because such consumables for the part that kept him where and how such a contest is designed to be used without the subject thought.
As far as I know
These pumpsand it's box
1 in homes
2. in bag
3. in medical places
It is used in places like this.
C ompany officials take into account the pump and boxes classifying it should have done this competition
Best wishes

The 'nook' 'they 6oz soap capacity they choose, whereas the technical requirements must be at least 12oz had written.'' soap pump 3 '' He does not even have the right CAD files honestly what they choose, models do not have CAD files of the renderer. Until yesterday no one had even look at the download, yesterday I downloaded and analyzed.whereas participation in the text, '' If you are looking at our business model too late, '' had the form of a sentence. 'Umbra Pebble,' 'he does not stand up models of their choice :)) themselves' am not sure'Umbra natural,' 'he deodorant bottle of their choice directly, not remotely do sabunlukl closely. Other models also already evident in the middle of them.
Most of the engineers are in same idea

Hi Mehmet,
I respect all the work and effort but I will never accept a jury that encourages designers against exceptiuonnels of designs that leave them because they decided to dare ... what is the secret to the success

location and capacity utilization because the pump box is divided into categories taken into consideration

There we're a lot of amazing designs for this challenge. The judges took a look at the 240+ entries and chose the designs that they felt best met the 5 judging criteria outlined above. That doesn't mean there weren't other fantastic designs. There absolutely were! Everyone who entered this challenge should be proud of the work that they did!
