URBEE 2 Insignia Design Challenge

Medium

Design the insignia for the world's greenest car, URBEE 2!

Learn more about the URBEE2

URBEE2 is a modern, sustainable vehicle that will revolutionize the way that we commute. The exterior’s lightweight construction of ABS plastic allows for a minimum amount of drag and fuel required to operate the car, and it’s stronger and more easily manipulated than steel. Able to hold two passengers, the URBEE2 could very well be the next big thing in urban transportation. The engine and the chassis will still be made from metal, and the max 10 horsepower engine is still in development. Most of the city driving (up to 40 mph) will be powered by a 36-volt electric motor, and higher speeds will be achieved by a diesel engine that can potentially be run on ethanol.

URBEE2 needs a branded insignia for their...

- Steering wheels
- Key fobs
- Hood emblems
- Side fenders and on the rear of the car
- Many promotional items like clothing, hats, pens, etc.

Get started with more information on insignias

The name of the car, URBEE, has its own distinctive lettering style. This is completely separate from the insignia. The insignia is a stand-alone image of the car brand. The winning insignia should look like it belongs beside other car insignias, and be world-class, such as ABARTH, Lotus, Lamborghini, Ferrari etc.

Extra details for you

Take a look at URBEE 2 video to get familiar with the vehicle and brand.

About the jury?

The jury will be comprised of experts from GrabCAD and KOR EcoLogic team.

About KOR EcoLogic Inc.

Today, there are 1 billion cars in the world. With population and affluence rising, this is rocketing towards 2.5 billion cars by 2050. If these are similar to today’s cars, this spells disaster. According to the International Energy Agency, by 2050, unless 2/3 of all known fossil fuel reserves stay in the ground, the climate would move the world to a non-habitable state. How these future 2.5 billion cars are designed is serious business.

Our small, independent team of seasoned designers believe now is the time to act. We believe that powering cars on Renewable Energy is vital to our civilisation’s survival. A first prototype was completed in 2013. It became the first car to have its body 3D printed, and is the greenest practical car ever made. We call our unique, low energy car URBEE.

We recently initiated a second prototype, called URBEE 2. We are embracing Digital Manufacturing as essential to the design of an environmental car. Engineered to safely mingle with traffic, the two passenger vehicle will have its entire exterior and interior 3D printed. “A future where 3D printers build cars may not be far off after all,” said Jim Bartel, VP of RedEye On Demand. If successful in crowdfunding, we will demonstrate URBEE 2′s potential to the world. In 2015, taking just 2 days, 2 people and a dog would travel from New York to San Francisco using 10 gallons of bio-fuel, setting a world record.

URBEE is a return to fundamentals, and a rethink of traditional automotive design and manufacturing. As a species endangered by our own actions, we must quickly learn to stop burning fossil fuels. Surely, the ultimate goal of Design is to serve the ‘public good’. Therefore, corporations and individual designers have a responsibility to offer products that are not only useful, but in balance with the environment.

Verry nice challenge, i'm sur to see alot of creative ideas,
Only a suggesion,I Think you have to add PSD File to the requerement, so that the Insignia as usualy it will be made using Photoshop, or coreldraw, or anyother vector drawing, and it will be also rendering perfectly,
Thanks for editing the Requirementv if you accept that idea,

Abhijeet & any others wondering: Urbee is an acronym that uses URB from "Urban", followed by two E's for Electric and Ethanol.

For those new to the Challenge process, we release what we believe to be the top entries. They are listed in no particular order. Over the next week, participants are able to voice their support or concerns. We encourage everyone following to leave a comment with their favorite or letting us know if we left a great entry out of the mix. Don't think of this as a vote - we want to connect with you on these concepts and that means more than having you submit entries it also means getting your feedback, too.

Im so disapointed, I barely agree with Bison logo (which is not original at all - look for "black bison" of rols roice, chevrolet bison, bison-bj1039, yamaha byson, etc-, but is the only one with attitude to be a car logo), but all the others ... I just tcan not understand it ... some of the chosen are babie toys!...after seeing all submitted logos, i had assumed that it was impossible that my logo was chosen, and opened the top 10 waiting to see the badges I knew they deserved to be there ... but this has been a real disappointment ...

I really really like my last entry. But these are the only designs that I consider that equated or exceeded it (presented in no particular order):

    'Technology Weds Nature'

    https://grabcad.com/library/urbee-2-insignia-3

    URBEE Logo Design

    Urbee Emblem

    URBEE 2 Insignia A

The Urbee-2 Insignia - AJC looks to much like this existing logo:

    http://www.rogerarmstrong.com.au/edit/logos/SEED%20ORGANIC.jpg

and the bison logo is not original at all (- look for "black bison" of rols roice, chevrolet bison, bison-bj1039, yamaha byson, etc-), as I said in my previous comment.

First of all, I was a little suprised with the outcome but in all honesty I was sort of expecting anything also. There were al ot of entries so I'm sure it was a hard task. I think URBEE's comments were absolutely and utterly impressive. Very very thoughtful, well said and just very cool and down to earth. Given the subjective nature of design ), I can't really knock URBEE for their choices, but for my tastes, the buffalo seems like the best choice so I'm on board for that one, here are my thoughts on the other choices:

    URBEE-2 Insignia Recyclable Love

Great logo but for me, just doesn't feel automotive enough....has more of a recycling related company feel to it.

    URBEE_Insignia_Challenge_VirajCHAUHAN

Great logo but too abstract for me, the association is just a little too vague, doesn't really say automotive to me. Again, just my thoughts.

    URBEE Insignia Design

Great logo and presentation but I would have voted for other similar concepts first....again, tough call, many good designs that were similar motif.

    https://grabcad.com/library/urbee-project-1-

Great logo but I just don't think URBEE when I see this so it doesn't do it for me with regards to associativeness.....

    https://grabcad.com/library/urbee-2-insignia-mk3-

This is a really good logo. I really like it but again, would I pick this before one of mine or the few others that were similar.......hmmmmmmm. Not sure......

    https://grabcad.com/library/urbee-2-insignia-ajc-

Poor Andrew Coyne is going to hate me for this, sorry pal )I say this with absolutely no ill intentions but for me, I'm baffled why this was picked over some other designs, to me, the curvature and sufacing doesn't work, it reminds me of an midievil knights helmet and just doesn't go with "URBEE". Really not digging this choice.

    https://grabcad.com/library/urbee-insigna-

I've read the reasoning behind this one, Nice concept and design, I can appreciate the thought and work, but for me, the colors, lines and design doesn't say URBEE. Different perspective.

    https://grabcad.com/library/urbee-emotiooon-by-motion-

Pinfor, the master of his craft, great design, although somewhat simple, to me this says automotive logo. Great choice and deserving of top 10. Again, my only caveat is that is just so simple, but that's what makes it great also. A double edged sword.

Many other good designs up there. -->>will post my top 5-10 when I have a chance.

I agree with Jonathan about that, from the chosen insignias, bison is the most suitable, the problem is that it has been used to exhaustion inside and outside the automotive field ...

haa, ok, thanks for the explanation Jonathan
I wish more people participate in this process and provide feedback comments like yours. I do not think it's healthy to accept, without further contemplation, the jury's decision. For me, elections as Bison logo, show a weak point in the jury. It is not my intention to offend anyone, but the truth is the truth. I just try to help when I make my observations. And I make my observations based on what was requested here:
    - Complementary to Urbee brand and philosophy
    - Suitable for a car of the future (that minds, Automotive attitude)
    - Fresh, clean, simple, and innovative

lol. Thing is, gotta keep in mind the URBEE team actually picked what they like, so you can't really argue with that, especially with something like this, logo design is not really like designing a product, it's much more subjective. What's good to you might be really bad for someone else and the "lines" not so clear cut.

The guidelines are there as a loose reference for the designers but ultimately the judging panel has final say whether they like it or not and the guidelines are usually loose enough for some play in there and usually leaves things pretty open to interpretation. If you and a few of your friends judged the same competition, the results would probably be way different I'm sure. I think in this case, the panel seems pretty open to feedback, which is always nice, I think if we got enough people together to single out one or two entries that we think should be up there or should not be up there then power in numbers might change the outcome. But again, it's logo design, wayyyyy too subjective. I also think URBEE's write up makes it pretty clear how their process worked. I thought it was very professional and thoughtful. It turned my frown upside down :P

If you recall, the 3D print show competition that ended a month ago, there was an ice cube tray that made it in the final ten. Absolutely rediculous choice given some of the other entries. Made me seriously question how the judges come to a decision about their choices. At least in that case. Absolutely fine model work, absolutely nothing against the designer, but it's a frick'n ICE CUBE tray! The model was't stylized, it wasn't unique and the only criteria that made it remotly derserving of top ten is that it is a SIMPLE 3D printable object. But when you have many other entires that hit the nail on the head with multiple criteria then you're obligated, or should be )... to choose them first.

    ice box 3D Printshow Challenge

But Lisandro, my final word for you is, every judging panel is different, every competition is different so don't give up, keep churning out designs and one day you'll get a hit. Look, I've won some that I didn't think I had a chance at and lost some that I thought for sure I'd win.... ).

    Wow, what a fantastic discussion!
First of all I wanna thank to Kor Ecologic and the Urbee brand for this unusual challenge in Grabcad. The fact that there is no money prize and it's been so popular shows that there are still people who believe in things that have a high value on their own without being paid. So I want to express my deep respect for all colleagues who participated in the contest for the simple fact of being involved in a wonderful project and maybe make a bit of history.
@Lisandro, my friend. I am sure that most of the participants in the contest have their own opinion on which designs are best and certainly they will include their own in the list as all in all it is the result of their own work and effort. And that is not bad, shows that perception and aesthetic tastes are different in each person. Even I probably would have included my another entry among the best at the expense of the best known Bison. You may not agree with the result in part or in whole, but what you can never doubt is the ability of the client (in this case Urbee) to take a decision based on their own criteria simply because they do not match with yours. As much as you work on Branding I can assure you will never know more about your customer's product than your own client. And I speak from experience.
About using the Bison within the automotive industry, the only thing I can tell you is that no one thinks the Mustang's horse logo is a copy of Ferrari for many years that it was previously present on the market. In fact Enzo Ferrari himself took it from the Italian aviator Francesco Baracca, a hero of the First World War. The same could say about Peugeot's lion or Holden. The most important thing is not something to be completely new and unprecedented but it suits the spirit of the product and can be easily recognizable. Actually, new things are not necessarily good as designs that works doesn't have to be liked for everyone.
Anyway, I think this contest is a great way to gather ideas for a final design. Whoever wins the contest it will result in a concept that should be worked and polished under the supervision from KorEcologic, to reach a final logo they can use. Or maybe they'll never use it...
Congratulations to all the shortlisted (and many like Lisandro who were not) for their amazing work.
Good luck for the final decision!

Daniel, you do not have to explain why it is valid to use the bison on a badge (of course, you're right in what you say). Jonathan explained me everything. You do not have to give any explanation. I thought the guidelines were a kind of rule but a "guide". While your design is not new, perfectly fulfills the other requirements, plus it looks great. Strongly hope that from top 10, your design be the winner. But I share the view of Jonathan that at least one or two badges, from top 10 should be replaced by others.

First of all I want to thank all the team for the challenge and the work done.
I based my design in a research of car logos and a prediction of the evolution. Based on the results, I predict an organic surface logo with metal colors and shades on it.
My own desig,n I think that it follow the good direction but it needs a little more simplicity and an evolution in the surface. More elegance and less shape.
I think that the top 10 is very accurate, so I'm going to pick between them.

For me, Urbee-2 Insignia - AJC , by Andrew Coyne, should be the winner, it's simple, it follows the esthetic of car logo and people will remember it in a second. Nice job!

About the others entries, we had a really good level in this competition and I'm very proud of getting in to the 10 best. I wouldn't choose any of the logos with squares, because car logo is about organic lines and for braking off from the main idea has to be a good reason.

It has been a particular challenge to me because it has to do with what I usually do.
I've seen some very professional and creative ideas in other challengers so I want to congratulate all finalist and some they were not. The respect and collaboration among GrabCad's members is what makes this such a great community. I am relatively new to GrabCad but I can say that it is changing my life and giving me an opportunity of meeting wonderful people eager to work together. So proud to be here!

I will not reject the opportunity to go ahead with this project. The fact of work closely to the Urbee Team is what makes sense to this challenge. So I am at the disposal of Jim Kor and his team for what they may need.

Any more news on the prizes from Urbee getting sent out Lauri? Seems to be they are just not fullfilling theor side of the deal. Will remove my entry if that's the case as there is not much else I can do. Not very impressed with Urbee or GrabCAD because of this.
