ZW3D Superhero Vehicle Design Challenge

Medium

Design a vehicle for your favorite superhero.

For most people, superheroes are an irreplaceable part of their childhood. It's full of reading a lot of comics, watching cartoons on TV, or going to the movies to watch them on the big screen. You remember their powers and recite them to your friends without any effort.

They all need to get to the scene to do rescues, but not all heroes can fly. Have you ever imagined a design for your favorite superheroes ride to the action? Now is the time to recapture your dream superhero vehicle and model it in 3D.

ZWSOFT joins GrabCAD once again for a design challenge, which provides GrabCADrs a chance to show their imagination, creativity, and design skills. Designs are not limited to cars, create any form of transportation to help your favorite superheroes get there faster.

ZWSOFT will provide a trial license for every participant, you can download it here. Please do not include any images of your superhero - mention your superhero inspiration in the description, along with the motivation for your choice of vehicle. To activate a 60-day trial license use the code: PLG5-9TXE-XFKR-HAAR-Z322-ZDFF.

For a KeyShot trial without watermarked renderings, email license@luxion.com with "ZW3D Vehicle Challenge" in the subject line. You will receive a 15 day license for use in the contest.

Requirements

  • Design your entry with ZW3D. Participants are not allowed to import a 3D model that was created with another software and saved as a Z3 file. Make significant modifications on any imported models, or build a new model with existing parts that were imported into ZW3D. Link to any existing parts used and give credit to the original author.

  • Participant must submit a .z3 file, rendering, and a STEP or IGES files of the their design.

  • Participants are encouraged to use the “Hybrid Modeling” function of ZW3D when designing their vehicles!

Rules

  • The competition is open to everyone. You can submit as many designs as you’d like, given that each follows the listed requirements.

  • Only models uploaded to GrabCAD library through this Challenge page will participate in the competition. Participants must submit z3 files, which is the file format of ZW3D, to this challenge. Tag the entries with “supervehicle”.

  • Team entries are welcome. In case of team win, prize money will be transferred to team leader who is solely responsible for splitting it among team members. Limit one prize per person/team.

  • Applicants are not entitled to any compensation or reimbursement for any costs. The applicant’s participation shall not constitute employment, assignment or offer of employment or assignment.

  • Winning designs will be chosen based on the rules and requirements. The submissions will be judged on design and creativity.

  • By entering this competition, you:
    a. Warrant that the work is your original work.
    b. To the best of your knowledge, it is not, and has not been in production or otherwise previously published or exhibited.
    c. Neither the work nor its use infringes the intellectual property rights (whether a patent, utility model, functional design right, aesthetic design right, trade mark, copyright or any other intellectual property right) of any other person.

  • All cash prizes awarded through Paypal. Void where prohibited. The sum of the Awards is the total gross amount of the reward. The awarded participant is solely liable for the payment of all taxes, duties and other similar measures if imposed on the reward pursuant to the legislation of the country of his/her residence, domicile, citizenship, workplace, or any other criterion of similar nature.

Just curious. Is there any restriction/guideline on the type of "super hero" during judging? Western? Orient? Anime? Manga? Comic? Modern? Ancient? Good guys? Baddies? Or really free for all =) Different people define super hero differently. Don't want to be "hit" by another silent death later.

@Ait - I have not read anything that restricts your choice of render engine. KeyShot are just being gracious enough to allow users access to a high speed professional rendering engine so they can make their projects look as best they can. Your only limits in this challenge are 1. It must be your own work and 2. It must have been created or heavily modified using ZW3D.

Zw3d actually seems to be quite an interesting modeling suite. It is important to try all the tools out there on the market as regardless of something being "industry standard" or not, there are many interesting features / approaches to modeling which newer 3d programs can provide that some of the larger companies haven't really been able to implement, for whatever reason. It isn't fair to judge something right away and disregard the challenge. The idea is that they want you to see what their program can do that the others can't. So far, I am impressed with the simplicity of the UI. I modelled something within the first 3 minutes of opening the program that I couldn't have done if I were opening inventor for the very first time.

@Victor Bonavarte Undoubtedly, this is a contest held by ZW3D. Using ZW3D offers designers like you guys a fresh exprerience of 3D modeling. Plus, it's easy to learn, especially for the experienced designers. Following the steps of "Show-n-Tell", the tuturiol tool in ZW3D, beginners can master this software in several hours.

but it all depends on the designer, because I have to install, and only 1 month only, give license 3 months will be interesting for me,

@Michelle Wong - That's a shame, if your software does not use DirectX or any OS specific Dll's then in theory it only needs a Wine wrapper which is how MoI3D does things, there are other smaller routines that are then tailored to suit the platform. More and more 3D apps are making their way on to OS X it would be nice to welcome another :)

  • Martin Spencer-Ford

Martin Spencer-Ford over 1 year ago

@Victor Bonavarte - I refer you to rule 1 under requirements. You may use your favoured for generating your base model, but you must then use ZW3D to extensively modify/add detailing to your creation.

Of course it's a promotional thing, good models created with their software = eye candy to potential new clients/customers. How best to promote a product and attract new users than a challenge or competition. It's good business sense, it's good PR and it's good to try other software and see what's happening. It might be biased towards their product but so what, it really is a win win situation - They win new promotion materials, entrants that are successful win worldly status/kudos and bragging rights that can last a life time.

You produce some good stuff Victor, roll your sleeves up and get stuck in man, it's free, you have nothing to loose :)

@Cristian - When importing into KS what tessellation are you importing - Default for KS is 0.2, if you have some fine detailing in your model you may need to increase this. The higher the number the finer the mesh generated and the larger the file will become

Martin Spencer-Ford about 1 year ago

@Cristian - that's a bummer, STEP is usually very well behaved with KS, the only other things i can think of are ...

    1. scaling. Have you set the scale in KeyShot to match ZW's ?
    2. Import STEP into one of your other apps that supports that format, then export from them as STEP again, then you'll know it's zw3d's problem.
    3. If this don't work and if ZW supports mesh export, then export as FBX or OBJ that will bypass KeyShots meshing routines.

@Critian&Everyone, hybrid modeling is a new 3D modeling technology, which combines the traits of both solid and surface modeling, allowing designers to trim face with solid features directly. We have a whitepaper (http://www.zwsoft.com/ZW3D/knowledge-base/white-paper/Future_Trends_of_3D_CAD_Modeling.html) and a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_fYfUpPRi0) to illustrate this modeling technology.

  • Martin Spencer-Ford

Martin Spencer-Ford about 1 year ago

@Michelle - Ahhh right Michelle ... MoI3d has been able to trim solids with surfaces, and curve splines and vice versa since at least v2. It's good to see another 3D app getting to grips with this technology. What will be interesting from my perspective is how fast you will progress with other features such as project with wrap and then blending of intersections and the N-Patches that have to be generated at times to try and keep continuity - I will be watching with interest to see how you as a team of developers evolve this style of modelling versus the single guy operation of MoI3D

Hi Just a quick question regarding the sketching of this program. I use solidworks mainly - but i am starting to get to grips with zw and finding a decent program. But i would like to know if there is anyway to convert entities of edges or previous sketches in zw as this is such an advantage in solidworks when working with surfaces? also is there anyway to create 3d sketches in zw? - again i feel this is a must for surface modelling. ive tried to search for these answers online but with no joy. Any help would be great. thanks.

  • Stefan Varga

Stefan Varga about 1 year ago

jamie you can use the reference function to re-use edges or curves from parts within the assembly, or just use curve from edge within the part. Tools for 3D sketching you can find in the Wireframe tab, you can use this tab to make base curves for the surfaces that you'll create in the Free Form tab.

@jamie use the open edges function to see where the open ones are, they also show in blue dashed lines on the model. You need to trim and stich them, also check for gaps between surfaces. But overall I wouldn't worry about opened surfaces since ZW3D works with both solids and surfaces simultaneusly with the hybrid modeling technology ;) you can even machine them in CAM

@stefan thanks. but the issue i have is that my model is all surfaces so when i creat a solid to add to the model i cant get it to merge and therefore i cant add fillets etc between the solid and the surface?

jamie has uploaded 19 CAD models & has left 73 comments.
  • Martin Spencer-Ford

Martin Spencer-Ford about 1 year ago

@Jamie, I don't know if zw3d can do this, but here is how in MoI3D, separate the solid into surfaces the use trim and or booleans and then join those surfaces left back together again and you should have a solid shape that then can have fillets and blends on corners and junctions.

If ZW can't do that, then export as STEP and get a 30day trial MoI and import it in, then once completed, export from MoI as STEP again, and import back into ZW then save as native file and continue your project

  • Colin Lin

@jamie, just as Stefan mentioned, ZW3D deal with both of solid and surface together, you can add the solid to the surface and even do boolean operation, which is the unique feature of ZW3D. Please read more information about working with Solid and surface by following link: http://www.zwsoft.com/forum/thread-3091-1-1.html

    Hey everyone.
I'd like to share my story with you.
Three weeks ago I saw this contest.
I wanted to participate but did not have the time.
I've never worked with ZW3D or Solidworks before.
Two years ago I worked with Inventor for just three weeks.
Because I love challenges, I decided to give it a try.
Using the few things I knew about Inventor, I started working On Friday night, at 7.
I worked continuously on Saturday and Sunday. I only took a break to sleep and eat.
Five minutes before deadline, I managed to upload my project.
For me it is already a success because I managed to finish a project in just three days, using a soft of which I knew nothing before.
Thank you, ZWSOFT, for making ZW3D an easy to learn software.
    Thanks, GrabCAD, for the competition.

Hi Sara, the description at the top of the page is confusing as it says "We believe that these five entries are the top designs. Let us know your favorite entry and recommend additions before Nov 27th."

However, there are ten designs shown on the results tab.

3Dconnexion is supporting this challenge and would like to extend the news about the finalists to its community. However, we want to make sure people know what to do when they visit the page (considering not all will already be GrabCAD members).

Can you confirm where you are expecting comments to be left. For example, in this thread, the page for each design or either?

Also, I assume voting is done by clicking the like (heart icon) on the design's page?

    Thanks :-)

I didnt enter this contest due to having to learn a new programme and time restrictions. But i was under the impression that the competition was to design a vehicle for a superhero - but i feel there are alot of entries that dont meet this requirement as they are just basicaly spaceships or fantasy ships - so for this reason i have to agree with Ian M and go with the F1 BAT CRUZER by jamie as this in my opinion is what contest was asking for - a relistic super hero vehicle modelled in ZW3D. I like this design because it suits the super hero it was designed for and looks like it could actually be built and put into action.

I like how asymmetrical the space ship Rhino Fighter 001 looks. It´s like reinventing how to fly
