Hey, I actually was able to print it out using my school's Dimension printer. I have to wait, for the soluble support to get removed in the heat bath, but when that's done I'll post some pics.
here. I haven't painted it yet. The back leg is REALLY fragile, and the printer didn't have the DPI to make the laboratory turn out quite so good. That said, the base looks amazing.
Looks good Steve! Ill try and print one on our printer at work. I tried once already but the back leg broke off so Ill scale the STL up a bit and try again. It is a fragile model but I wanted to keep it as close to the game model as possible so the legs are very skinny.
Yeah its a pretty flimsy model. Ill see if I can work up a bit chunkier version to help with 3D printing. Although It would be a very cool die-cast model! :)
I know!!! Arrg, I should have taken the day off! You should e-mail me your steam name. We could start a GrabCAD group lol. I'm looking forward to the multilayer, its going to be crazy!
I went with the Portal craze and collected some fun ways of making your very own turret (paper model, Lego), couple of cool videos as a bonus. And if you two have anything to add about 3D printing this model then do drop a comment in the blog post.
@Siim- Awesome post! I love the lego turret :). I just finished the single player of Portal 2 last night and it is great! The puzzles are harder, the dialog is hilarious and the graphics are beautiful.
I'll put together a shared Dropbox folder sometime soon with images. If anyone would like access to the project folder, send me an email at dherzberg@alum.wpi.edu with the SolidWorks version you prefer (2010 or 2011). This is gonna be fun!
Daniel, what wouldn't you use GrabCAD for that. You can share stuff here privately. IF you it's not as good as dropbox, let me know (hardi@grabcad.com) and we will improve it.
Also, I had no idea you could collaborate via GrabCAD. How do you do that? Dropbox syncs between computers automatically, and you don't have to upload and download each time, or worry about version control.
Daniel, yep that's true. You can directly open file in dropbox, we dont have that functionality, but thanks for bringing that up. I think if we can solve that, it will be better than DropBox.
sweet! but the cheating is actually just converting the file. The valve developer community has a process for turning the original valve model file (.MDL) into a workable CAD format. in fact, that's how I made my portal turret, by going through 3ds max and then just importing it into autocad.
that said, you'll probably get an inconvertable mesh at the end, which does you no good.
the catch is, this works with ANY model even the really hard to work with soft bodies.
Did you actually made it in real life?
over 1 year agoNo unfortunately not, but ive wanted to make one as a computer case for a while. If I ever get the free time or $ I will!
over 1 year agoWhat!? As a computer case? This belongs in the front yard, scaring off kids, thieves and tax collectors.
over 1 year agoScott, I presented GrabCAD in a pitching event today and your file was a real eye-catcher.
over 1 year agoNICE. definitely want to use this for some renderings.
over 1 year agoLooking forward to it Josh specially after I saw what Burhop did with Jon's glasses.
over 1 year agoId love to see some renderings of this by a pro!
over 1 year agoso Josh, you now have a weekend project
over 1 year agoFor those of you who don't know what this is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i-nMWgBUp0.
I can't wait for Portal 2!

10 months agoyeah, this one was 1/8th, and that seemed to go OK..... until I tried to paint it, and the glue failed.
I think ideally, it'd be a metal sculpture, considering.
although, I think quarter, or 6th scale would probably be better off.

10 months agoCan't wait for Portal 2!! Any day now. Awesome model, I just wish it was in SW 2010 format...
10 months agoPortal 2 is out now! It released last night, I can't wait to get home and play!
10 months agoWhat!?! Why am I at work?

9 months agoBest turret model I've seen!
9 months agoIs it possible to save it as a SolidWorks 2010 version?
I would also like to see it as a 2010 version...
9 months agoI'm seriously considering trying to tackle Atlas or P-body in SolidWorks. Is anyone interested in a group effort?
9 months agoI have been crazy busy lately but Id be up for the challenge! I think P-body would be a bit easier. That would be a fun 3D print!

9 months agoWell, you can cross Companion Cube off the checklist Companion Cube :)
9 months agoyou know, I think I'm going to make a bust of chell and maybe a glados while we're doing this. although i'm going to uh... "cheat"
