Feed Contest - ironworker shear assembly design-3 By Philippe Carrier on 22 Jan 20:59

This is a last minute design, it can have a lot of improvements. I really wanted to try this contest. I really enjoy machine design.

So here is my first «revision» for this contest. After two tries, I finally found one that wasn't compromising size with effectiveness. In fact, using a 5" bore to apply 120 tons wasn't something easy to accomplish when we are aiming to use as least material as possible.

I haven't made calculation concerning the shafts, bushings, welding and frame at the moment. I've only calculated the minimum area of screw on the cutting tool. I had to use a minimum of .001147m^2 in order to get a security factor of 1 with 180 000psi tensile strength.

It means about 7 M16 screw. I found that pretty weird that in the «American Punch Catalog», most 12" blade only had 4 screws holes... Can someone confirm this? For this model, I've used custom tool steel cutters as reference. I think that the models shown in the PDF are made for thinner metal.

The way it works is very similar to the suggested angular design. One major thing is that the downward movement will cut plate and the upward movement will cut angles.

I'll try to add a punch tool mechanism, but I wanted to share this model before, it could be inspiring to anybody.

I hope you like the model! If you have any suggestion, I'd be happy to know it!

Revision

I've added the punch tool on the front of the machine.

The mechanism is there, but it still need a few improvements. I've designed it pretty big and the next step would be to make a few calcs in order do get the rights dimensions. the whole system will probably be a lot lighter, but I would have needed a little more time.

Also, the structure could be lighten by making holes to specific areas and keep the drops for further projects.
