Diy ballnut using roller bearings

Simple DIY ball nut using roller bearings on a standard ACME threaded screw. Also works on coarse metric thread. Works surprisingly well and is backlash free. Nice for beginner cnc plasma systems due to sealed bearings being very resistant to the dust environment.

Aaron, in practice, only one edge needs to touch the screw, so bearing size is not all important.

Hmm, I guess you're right. How much tension is there between the screw and bearing? Why an ACME thread?

Aaron, actually this works with any type of thread as long as the pitch is coarse enough to provide a seat for the bearing edge. That adjustment bolt right at the bottom uses a rubber insert to provide the "tension". Lower rotational speed for the screw will require less tension. The ideal is to have as wide a groove in the screw as possible to increase the surface contact of the bearing edge, then the only tension required is to cancel backlash.
