How does it hold a pen? Do you place them horizontally and watch them spiral down? A very beautiful object but in ceramic I fear it would be too delicate for practical use.

Hi Aled - it holds a pen just like a normal pot or cup. I printed one for me to use on my desk and have had no problems at all with it. There are always two or three fingers supporting the pens / pencils, so they never get a chance to slip down.
