  when I clicked on the download it came in as text not a file? we have managed to open the SLDPRT in Rino and save it as iges now.

     If I had seen your question a tad earlier, Rhino is what I would have said. There is a 30-saves version on their website, ultimately unabling you to convert 30 files to IGES, STEP, or a whole lot of other things. But Im glad you have found that solution already, and I'm glad.... +1

  You should be able to import the .sldprt directly into Pro/E, I do the opposite frequently without problems.

     you cannot unless you have a license key for SolidWorks Document Manager. So normally Pro/E (Creo) will not be able to open any Solidworks file.
