I don't know if this is the best place for this, but I'm not aware of an alternative...
This is not a question but a recommendation for a piece of free software. Similar to Mathcad there is a free program called SMath which can be found at
I have no involvement with this but have found it to be very useful and very impressive for a free tool. Its compatible with Mathcad which I use at work, so any ideas i work on at home i can use at there too without having to re-create them.
For anyone not familiar it is a symbolic calculation tool, I.e. you type the equations as you would write them (see attached pdf file)

does it plot graphs?
It does, yes. It has the tools for 2D and 3D graphs. I've not used this function yet so can't comment much on them
thanx. I was in need of one for so long... never wanted to use some gigabytes software just for plots... :P :) This looks more promising
