How to convert .stp file to .3ds or .dwg in 3dsMax for use in ArchiCAD?

I typically use ArchiCAD, but also have 3dsMax. There are several really great files on GrabCAD that are in .stp format that I am unable to get into either ArchiCAD or 3dsMAX.

Can anyone kindly give me some pointers on how to import or convert the .stp into something that ArchiCAD can see & use? I've attached a .zip file of the .stp (including all the SolidWorks files) that I need to convert.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance-

Hi johndeere,

I am working on a similar front: conversion of CATIA V5 to Blender via 3ds. One export route in this process is via STEP. My current favorite is Glovius, which digests most of the common CAD formats an is able to convert to many 3D/CAD formats.
I document my findings in more detail in my blog:

I have tried to import your file in 3ds max it worked for me.
here is the converted DWG file attached

Import .STEP into 3dsmax then go top right max --->Export(non Native)--> window opens then at the bottom select file Type ------>AutoCAD(.DWG) ant name it----->
Dont adjust Anything by Export Setup. just klick export
DONE. no need for plug ins this works just fine

what file formats your program opens. (imports-may be an option in the program)
I do not know these programs from the kitche

Use direct connect from autodesk, is a plugin for 3dsmax 2013 or another versions

It can be done from .stp to .3ds with https://www.convertcadfiles.com. There is a free trial. Unfortunatelly .dwg as output is not supported but with .3ds may work.

My method is with the help of "3dstudio In" by the Goodies section in Downloads, from the Graphisoft site. Note that they didn't update it to keep track with the latest hotfix and you can only use it for the built number specified in this case (3002). The link is over here: graphisoft.com/downloads/goodies/AC17/INT.html . You can import the 3ds file from the "File" dialog and see the the option about 3ds importing (can't remember what is called right now). The imported model will need further tweaking in the GDL object dialog for no errors, but even if you don't do them, you can have a decent result.
