LoL we think in the same way. As you said and i did, 2d sketch works on this model.
It makes the sketch for you from existing edges, here it makes lines from the edges you selected rather than redrawing them ... it's very useful when you want complex edges redrawn ...
Wow, I don't believe I missed it ... You don't need sketches for lofting edges, open your file ... click on Lofted Surface, right click the Profiles box and choose SelectionManager ... choose all the edges then the green arrow, click on the circle sketch and you're done ...
There is no direct way to do it i see. Just redraw the shape of the top again and Loft the surfaces.

Step 1
Select Top Plane Which is the top of the shape too. Open a scetch.
Step 2
Draw a sketch just like the shape of the top. Be sure there are 20 edges not 10.
Step 3
You can draw 2 of them and circle pattern them 10 times.
Step 4
Select Lofted Surface and fill in other options.
Step 5
Everything looks just fine.
There is a few more way to do that. If he is not happy with this one. We have to go back a little bit on his design ;)
