How to make a perpendicular edge to a complex surface

By Indrek Narusk on 01 Sep 05:59 3 answers 816 views 0 comments

I have a part (back part of a chair) that is supposed to be bended from plywood and it has to have perpendicular edges to the top surface. I need to make the edge perpendicular, but sweep fails because the nature of the part. Any suggestions?

It's the chair! I will be installing IV onto my new system within the next week or so if you have the original file i did i may be able to make some changes for you if i get time. Although Danny's try looks pretty much there... keep me posted. :)

i will suggest you to make a tangent plane first to complex surface and then you will be able to make a perpendicular easily with that tangent plane

Hi Indrek, If you're starting from scratch I suggest you make a surface of your chair back then apply 'thicken' that will keep the edge faces perpendicular to the bend.
By using your model as reference I offsetted the top face by zero then apply 'Thicken' to that surface, the top two corners come out a bit funky but I managed to repair them, you can see the procedure in the attached file which is SW 2011 version, I'm no expert but I have access to SW sometimes.
