Show off your skills and solve real design problems
500 Group is pleased to work together again with GrabCAD to offer the community 2nd in a great series of challenges.
Your task is to design the dash of the upcoming supercar developed under a General Motors special-projects supply agreement.
For additional info about the supercar go to:
1. http://blog.grabcad.com/2012/05/500-group-results/
2. http://blog.cargurus.com/2012/10/26/engineering-a-supercar-part-2 (with video)
3. http://www.autoblog.com/2012/05/26/what-supercars-would-look-like-if-they-were-designed-by-engineer/
The dash gauge is an LCD TFT touch screen, use the PSD layout provided.
Because the dash is a monitor it provides the opportunity to create 3D content on the flat screen and that’s where the GrabCAD community is expert.
The primary goals of the challenge are as follows:
1. To create a 3D ‘holographic’ experience with a sense of layers, depth and floating 3 dimensional elements for the user.
2. To create the simplest, purest functional dash possible, subscribe to the axiom ‘less is more’.
3. To use color and animation for the purpose of conveying functional information during operation of the dash.
PLEASE NOTE THE DEADLINE OF THIS CHALLENGE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO JANUARY 13, 2013 (LAST TIME ZONE).
YOUR OUTPUT SHOULD INCLUDE:
1) OE Dash
This is the baseline design that will be used in the cars.
Make sure to include at least one baseline dash as simple as possible with no chrono faces or unnecessary info.
Use the PSD layout and the following color palette:
Grey1 242/242/242
Grey2 217/217/217
Grey3 166/166/166
Grey4 127/127/127
Red 192/0/0
Blue 0/80/170
You can also provide alternative color pallets
2) Dash Skins
Using the supplied PSD layout create different themes or different looks a user will be able to toggle through. For example classic, modern, techno style, etc.
3) Chrono faces
Chrono faces toggle on and off simply by touching them. Supplied are chrono faces for boost and G-force, but you can come up with anything you would personally find useful in a racing car.
4) Animation
A great deal of information can be provided to the user via animation during the operation. The speedo needle can turn red past 80mph or the rev are can pulse after 6500rpm (the red line). Think about 3D animation as a way to provide information only when it is needed. Do not use animation to distract or clutter the information delivery.
Your final graphic output should be 2 dimensional and inserted into the provide 3d dash frame, output in Photoshop PSD open layer is preferred.
Your final output must strictly adhere to the supplied PSD layout. See the black and white JPEG for what information goes where. The style can be changed, for example the needles do not have to be needles. The graphic icons are suggestions to indicate the function for that area of the graphic.
The Challenge is open to everyone.
Team entries are welcome. In case of team win, prize will be transferred to team leader who is solely responsible for splitting it among team members.
You can submit several entries.
Only entries uploaded to GrabCAD library through this challenge page here will participate in the competition.
By entering this competition, you
1. Warrant that the work is your original work.
2. To the best of your knowledge, it is not, and has not been in production or otherwise previously published or exhibited.
3. Neither the work nor its use infringes the intellectual property rights (whether a patent, utility model, functional design right, aesthetic design right, trade mark, copyright or any other intellectual property right) of any other person.
Applicants are not entitled to any compensation or reimbursement for any costs. The applicant’s participation shall not constitute employment, assignment or offer of employment or assignment.
Tag your model with “supercardash”. Only entries with valid tag will participate!
Winning designs will be chosen based on the rules and requirements.
This Challenge starts on December 10, 2012 and ends on January 11, 2013, at Last Time Zone.

So am I right in my understanding that we are designing a digital layout scheme for the information on the LCD screen, and not the physical dash board itself?
Aref A over 12 years ago
Christian, if I'm not wrong , we are tasked to design a DIGITAL Dash Gauge ( speedo + odo + temperature + hi-beam + etc. The goal here is to make it look LCD OLED - esque. lol i think . ASk the 5G guys for further clarification.

It sounds like an interesting contest but the timeline is pretty tight for the stated goals, especially considering time away for the holidays.
Supercar System over 12 years ago
Christian: correct
Aref A: also correct this is an LCD TFT dash and you desigining the 3D graphics for it
Lekaimadh: the logo should be a PNG file that scales to be smooth

Fahad Rafi Butt over 12 years ago
still dn understand what eeeww need to design,
do we need to show how a dash board will look??,
Fahad Rafi Butt over 12 years ago
or a tft touch screen?
Axiom34 over 12 years ago
So what we're doing is taking the template that's given and making it look 3D? Or are we supposed to design a dash design from scratch that fits in that space?
Supercar System over 12 years ago
this is a 2D graphic project
use the provided photoshop PSD template to create 2D graphics, the graphics can of course be of 3D objects with drop shadows etc and layers that give the impression of 3D, then if you have the ability animate it per the brief to add value
place the final result in the supplied housing and your submission is complete
Fahad Rafi Butt over 12 years ago
so it aint related to CAD?
Supercar System over 12 years ago
fahad. it is completely related to cad, we create 3D objects on 2D screens this is the same
Supercar System over 12 years ago
lekaimadh. suggest you post it up for feedback, yours is posted first no need to be concerned
Andres San Millan over 12 years ago
I cannot see any of the 3d models in SolidWorks 2012. Could you provide the 3d objects in other format? (preferably 3ds max compatible).
Another question: A raster format (PSD) as output? Wouldn´t you prefer a vectorial format? (swf,ai,eps...). It is awful to animate a raster image.
Supercar System over 12 years ago
will add STL files which should be ok for 3ds max, yes vector is ok

Sara Sigel about 12 years ago
@Alfonso What problem are you having with the specifications? Have you tried looking at the link above, http://grabcad.com/library/500-group-3d-dash-competition-psd-template?

I am near the end of my entry :D
Alfonso Gonzalez about 12 years ago
Thanks @Sara and @Lekaimad but i wanted to know the exactly size of the touchscreen, because of ergonomics of reading the numbers for the user... but ok... i will be finishing soon.
Alfonso Gonzalez about 12 years ago
Is it strictly mandatory to make different "skin" layouts, hi-tech, classic, etc???
Alfonso Gonzalez about 12 years ago
Please reply, deadline is in seven days, for god's sake!
Ajay Agrawal about 12 years ago
@alfonso gonzalez I think it's you have to supply different skin layout because it is in reqiurement.
Alfonso Gonzalez about 12 years ago
@lekaimadh Thanks, mate! i will upload something soon because i'm really working in other thing.
