Show off your skills and solve real design problems
Rabaconda (formerly Generat) challenges you to create a portable and easy-to-use dirtbike tire changing tool for manual changing of tires.
Changing tires with tire levers can be a difficult challenge for inexperienced dirtbike riders. Bruised knuckles, broken inner tubes and ejecting levers discourage attempts. The goals of the to-be-designed invention are to find a method for avoiding these problems and to make tire changing a much easier task.
Motorcycle enthusiasts! Dirtbike enthusiasts! Creative engineers! Develop the most innovative tire changing tool for off-road motorbikes and win cash prizes (and a little bit of GrabCAD fame).
To get an idea about tire changing process have a look at the video:
The tool must work without using tire levers
The tool must be both for mounting and removing tires
The tool must be manually operated
The tool must be compact and easily portable
Tool can be composed of any material
Should not require locking to ground
Should not damage or scratch the wheel
Should not damage inner tube
Designed primarily for off-road motorcycles
Designed for end users (including amateurs), not for professional mechanics
Aesthetics are important
Designed with regards to cost effectiveness and manufacturability
Please refer to the following model to take into account the critical objects that might affect the design of the tool Dirt bike rear wheel
Winning design will be chosen based on the following criteria: functionality, design, weight, size, manufacturability, ease of use, and operating speed
The competition is open to everyone
Team entries are welcome. In case of team win, prize money will be transferred to team leader who is solely responsible for splitting it among team members
You may submit several designs
Only models uploaded to the GrabCAD library are eligible to participate in the competition
Tag your model with “motocycle tire changing tool ” to make it easier to find
Privately uploaded models will be made public after the competition deadline. You may upload a private model but you need to share access with kaspar@grabcad.com and tkallast@gmail.com
Models can be done in any CAD software, including Sketchup, as long as a STEP or IGES files are also uploaded
Only models uploaded through this challenge page will participate in the competition
Competition starts: June 1st, 2012
Competition ends: June 21st, 2012, Last Time Zone 23:59
Competition winners will be announced on the challenge page under tab 'Results' and http://blog.grabcad.com/ and

Interesting contest, I already had some plans for a tool like this.
Too bad I almost have exams next week so I cant join since I need to study...
Tõnu Kallast almost 13 years ago
@Julian - both levels of portability are accepted. Light weight and compactness give extra points.
@Sybren - best of luck in your exams! I hope you will find some time to submit your design.

Great challenge! I already uploaded one entry! Please do have a look and tell me what you think!
Rotariu C almost 13 years ago
I don`t know exactly how this works... I added the the file twice now and it does not show up in the entries field. I will delete the second one if needed but how does it work?
Tõnu Kallast almost 13 years ago
Many thanks for all the entries so far! I will leave my comments to the models page.
@Rotariu I have reported your problem to Kaspar.

@Rotariu - the tags on your entry are different to the tags on the other entries. Maybe it is worth a try changing them.

@Russell Donovan That helped thanks a lot!

wow glad i checked in on this. I change my own tires on my dirt bikes and supermotos and could use a product like this. Hopefully i can free up some time to think about this. And since i have to mount some new slicks this weekend ill have some thinking time:) Sorry Joachim but i dont have a ktm. would love a 450smr if you are taking notes...

can i get an idea for the type of motocross bike this will be getting used on? Dakar rally bikes? enduro racing bikes? strictly motocross?
i have an idea for a portable kit but would only make sense to carry for enduro/dakar/dual sport use
Matt Perez almost 13 years ago
derek, i would guess this would be aimed at trail bikes, GNCC/hare scrambles type racing/adventure riding. Im focusing on 18-19" trail tires using my 140 rear as a max.
Tõnu Kallast almost 13 years ago
The tool must work with motocross, enduro and trial bikes. Wheel diameters vary from 18 to 21 inches.
Guys, does a can opener bring some inspiration for the design? Just a thought I have.
Michael Maddocks almost 13 years ago
^^^ ha ha my design is similar to a can opener, I hope you didn't just ruin my chances
Tõnu Kallast almost 13 years ago
no don't worry that was just a random thought not a wish nor requirement :)
Samuel almost 13 years ago
Hello! my design is nearly done but is it necessary upload a video showing how it works?
Tõnu Kallast almost 13 years ago
Hi Samuel! Model with some renderings and a short description are just fine. Though a video demonstration would be awesome.
Samuel almost 13 years ago
Thanks, I'll do the video because I think it is necessary. It's an easy design but with interesting things to see.

I've just upload a model and tags in tiretool but haven't show in entries for this challenges.should i upload again?

Dear participants,
if you would like to ask for advise or feedback about your entries, please feel free to send me a message!

unfortunately I didnt have time to design anything for this challenge. I just had a look through some of the entries. I know there is a very small amount of time left but remember guys they are asking for a tool or set of tools that you can carry with you/compact. Also they said without the use of tire levers. i saw at least one entry that was only tire levers. Think about the tool kit that you carry on a trail bike. Also think how those tools work. You use a screw driver for leverage by sticking it through a socket etc. Make use of acme threads using a scissor type mechanism with a screw to break the bead.
Good Luck! I would love to see a cool usable product come out of this!

Sorry to say this but in my opinion first and third place by all means do not meet the requirements. I don`t consider them as real possible serial production items.
And I quote :
"The tool must work without using tire levers";
"Designed with regards to cost effectiveness and manufacturability";
" Winning design will be chosen based on the following criteria: functionality, design, weight, size, manufacturability, ease of use, and operating speed."
Again I am sorry to say this but I consider that for the future projects the initial requirements should be taken more into consideration. In my field of work you start with requirements and if you don`t stick to them then the project is rejected.
For the other winners, 2-nd place and 5-th place : Great job guys!
Best regards to all!!
