Dirtbike Tire Changing Tool Challenge

Rabaconda (formerly Generat) challenges you to create a portable and easy-to-use dirtbike tire changing tool for manual changing of tires.

Changing tires with tire levers can be a difficult challenge for inexperienced dirtbike riders. Bruised knuckles, broken inner tubes and ejecting levers discourage attempts. The goals of the to-be-designed invention are to find a method for avoiding these problems and to make tire changing a much easier task.

Motorcycle enthusiasts! Dirtbike enthusiasts! Creative engineers! Develop the most innovative tire changing tool for off-road motorbikes and win cash prizes (and a little bit of GrabCAD fame).

To get an idea about tire changing process have a look at the video:

    @Julian - both levels of portability are accepted. Light weight and compactness give extra points.

    @Sybren - best of luck in your exams! I hope you will find some time to submit your design.

    I don`t know exactly how this works... I added the the file twice now and it does not show up in the entries field. I will delete the second one if needed but how does it work?

    @Rotariu - the tags on your entry are different to the tags on the other entries. Maybe it is worth a try changing them.

    can i get an idea for the type of motocross bike this will be getting used on? Dakar rally bikes? enduro racing bikes? strictly motocross?

    i have an idea for a portable kit but would only make sense to carry for enduro/dakar/dual sport use

    derek, i would guess this would be aimed at trail bikes, GNCC/hare scrambles type racing/adventure riding. Im focusing on 18-19" trail tires using my 140 rear as a max.

    The tool must work with motocross, enduro and trial bikes. Wheel diameters vary from 18 to 21 inches.
    Guys, does a can opener bring some inspiration for the design? Just a thought I have.

    unfortunately I didnt have time to design anything for this challenge. I just had a look through some of the entries. I know there is a very small amount of time left but remember guys they are asking for a tool or set of tools that you can carry with you/compact. Also they said without the use of tire levers. i saw at least one entry that was only tire levers. Think about the tool kit that you carry on a trail bike. Also think how those tools work. You use a screw driver for leverage by sticking it through a socket etc. Make use of acme threads using a scissor type mechanism with a screw to break the bead.

    Good Luck! I would love to see a cool usable product come out of this!

    Sorry to say this but in my opinion first and third place by all means do not meet the requirements. I don`t consider them as real possible serial production items.

    And I quote :
    "The tool must work without using tire levers";
    "Designed with regards to cost effectiveness and manufacturability";
    " Winning design will be chosen based on the following criteria: functionality, design, weight, size, manufacturability, ease of use, and operating speed."

    Again I am sorry to say this but I consider that for the future projects the initial requirements should be taken more into consideration. In my field of work you start with requirements and if you don`t stick to them then the project is rejected.

    For the other winners, 2-nd place and 5-th place : Great job guys!
    Best regards to all!!
