Show off your skills and solve real design problems
In order to stave off climate change, we need to decarbonize all energy vectors. Electricity from renewable sources by itself can go a long way, but not everything can be electrified and many applications will continue to rely on fuels and gases. Here, the energy carrier hydrogen presents a viable way forward, as it can be produced from just renewable electricity and water. Hydrogen is the fuel with the highest energy density by weight. It is a true multi talent and there exist many ways to make its energy usable. The green hydrogen is essential for the decarbonization of the energy world.
Design an innovative device or system that uses the energy carrier. Go crazy and know no borders whether you are designing innovative cooking stoves, new mobility concepts, extreme sport applications, energy storage systems or whatever else. The world is your oyster!
You can also engineer any auxiliaries for hydrogen-based systems, e.g. hydrogen compressors, hydrogen storage solutions, and hydrogen drying and purification systems. Your design might be the next breakthrough in hydrogen technologies.
You can also illustrate any future scenarios where hydrogen fully replaced fossil fuels and became the primary energy source of our life. Imagine a camping site, sporting equipment, long-range drones, or race cars entirely powered by hydrogen…
Let your creativity lead us to the future of hydrogen.
The finalists are invited to present their designs at Enapter’s Generation Hydrogen event on May 19th, 2021. The winner will be announced at the event.
The Green Hydrogen cycle:
Green hydrogen is produced via water electrolysis using renewable power sources. The anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyser can generate 500 NL of hydrogen gas per hour by splitting water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen with an electrical power input of 2.4 kW. This endothermic reaction can store the electrical energy in hydrogen in the form of chemical bonds. What can you do with the green hydrogen produced via electrolysis? One of the most important ways to utilize green hydrogen is to subsequently release the renewable energy. This requires an exothermic reaction of the hydrogen-oxygen combination. The process can be carried out in a hydrogen burner or a hydrogen fuel cell.
A hydrogen burner can produce heat via direct or catalytic combustion with water as the only by-product. Hydrogen and oxygen are fed into the burner separately, where the combustion reaction is initiated by ignition or catalysts. The generated heat can be used directly for cooking, residential heating, etc. It can also be converted to mechanical energy by driving a hydrogen steam engine.
Fuel cells sandwich negative and positive electrodes around an electrolyte solution. In hydrogen fuel cells, a catalyst at the negative electrode separates hydrogen molecules into protons and electrons. The electrons take an external route to the positive electrode, creating electricity flow, and reunite with the protons (and oxygen) to produce hydrogen fuel cells’ only other emissions: water and heat. In this way, the fuel cell can provide electricity to the external devices.
Hydrogen is an ideal power source for heat or electricity in your designs.
[long-term energy storage] Hydrogen fuel cells are often used to replace diesel generators for zero-carbon electricity. It also has the additional advantage of long-term energy storage, whereas diesel has an expiration time of only 6-12 months.
[on-site production] Hydrogen can be simply produced from water and renewable energy (e.g. wind, solar, tidal power). The AEM electrolyser can even be fed with rainwater. Hydrogen is ideal for applications at remote locations where transport of fuels is extremely limited.
[high energy density] 1kg of hydrogen contains 39.8 kWh (higher heating value) of energy. The high energy/weight density makes hydrogen a highly efficient fuel material for aviation and other applications, where the fuel weight should be reduced to the minimum.
[quick refill] Compared to batteries, hydrogen can be refilled more quickly. Considering the high energy density of hydrogen, the energy per refill gives hydrogen a better advantage over batteries for long-distance mobility and similar fields.

Hello,
I would like to ask for information.
Is it possible to deliver the project in .stl format?
I'm currently working on Blender in order to design the model and render the scene.
The project will be submitted in .stl format with PDF attachments.
Thanks!
Jingwen Wang almost 4 years ago
@Riccardo Rabotti, thank you for your comment. We may not be able to visualize some features with the .stl format, but we can try anyway. If you can also provide some additional documentation to show your work, it should be enough.
We are looking forward to seeing your design!

Sir the question of mine is what topic we should focus on. Usage of hydrogen with Enapter's device produced or design a system that can maintain itself with Enapter devices while using solar or wind electricity and producing hydrogen or finding new area that hydrogen can be used. I think it is not clear enough

@Deniz Aksoy thank you for your feedbacks. One of the purpose for the Hydrogen Challenge is to demonstrate the versatility of hydrogen application. We are hoping to see more than the existing hydrogen techs. It would be the best if you can find new exciting areas that hydrogen can be used. We also think that a nice improvement and awesome modifications based on existing hydrogen applications deserve celebrations as well. Any applications that help to replace fossil fuels with hydrogen and stave off climate change are welcome!
We are looking forward to seeing your designs!

could you please correct the units in the first paragraph of the "green hydrogen cycle" paragraph. what is an NL?
solidworks saeed almost 4 years ago
@Jingwen Wang tanks a lot
Jingwen Wang almost 4 years ago
@nick hitchcock Hi, NL stands for "normal liter", that is one liter of gas at a pressure of 1 atmosphere and at a standard temperature of 0 °C. Hope this helps.

Green hydrogen is essential for our world’s decarbonisation, that much is clear. There are vast number of use cases. But we believe there are so many more to come. The Enapter Hydrogen Challenge is where you can unleash the versatility of the green gas.
Finalists will be invited to present their ideas in front of an audience at the Generation Hydrogen event on May 19, 2021. We will hold an award ceremony for the four winners as well.

solar tawer is utility in the future to provide hydrogen, electricity and distilled water instead of installing silicon photovoltaic panels, we can use solar tawer to provide electricity by using its turbine which works with water vapor and at the places of use the water from the reservoir in the station we can use sea water to produce water vapor then the condensation of this vapor can produce distilled water this product (distilled water) is very important for countries which have the desert knowing that the amount of rain in the coming years will deteriorate further due to the emission of CO2 in can also used electricity supplied in large quantities feed the stations near the sea to produce hydrogen which will be dispersed in all countries of the world for example Africa will produce hydrogen for Europe and Africa, America has its desert and China has a desert and Saudi Arabia Australia and hydrogen will be used as fuel for cars and gas turbines that generate electricity we must react quickly to find the balance of nature in keeping our technological growth.solar tawer.

Great to see diverse hydrogen applications and innovative ideas. But I found most of the solutions are unrealistic for the case of hydrogen in practice nor it discuss the challenges of hydrogen. Please do consider technical specifications and practicality of the designs for evaluation.
