Show off your skills and solve real design problems
GrabCAD is looking to see who has what it takes to create an amazing full color 3D printable spaceship model. Since we have had a lot of NASA challenges in the past, we want to go back into space with a full-color Spaceship model design challenge. You will be given free reign to come up with an original design of a spaceship. We want to see what colors you can put on your model, as well as textures. The top spaceship designs will be 3D printed with our own Stratasys J750 PolyJet 3D printer and sent to the winners. So start your thrusters and get designing!
The goal of the challenge is to see if you can design a cool spaceship that will be 3D printed in full color via our Stratasys J750 Printer. The only limits to this challenge are your imagination and the build volume of the printer. You should design your spaceship with multi-color, multi-polyjet material, and multi-texture in mind.
For any help on how to add colors or textures to your model via GrabCAD Print and on how to select a Stratasys J750 to check out these GrabCAD tutorials.(Include a link to the Selecting a J750 in GCP and selecting color/material in GCP tutorials).
JUDGING REQUIREMENTS:
1. Design of the model
2. The uniqueness of the spaceship design
3. Level of color complexity incorporated in the design
4. Use of textures on the model
5. Estimate of print time/material usage
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Submission file format: .PRINT, VRML or OBJ (preferred for Color and Printing)
2. Size to be printed on tray: 8in x 3in x 3in
3. Design for 3D printing on a Stratasys J750
4. Estimate in GrabCAD Print
SUBMISSION FILE FORMATS:
VRML and OBJ (preferred for Color and Printing)
Rendering(s) of your Spaceship model
.print file

The dimensions provided are 8"x3"x3", is that a strict max dimension or are we allowed go beyond that?
geo over 3 years ago
I don‘t like to participate at the challenge.
Hans de Ridder has amazing models and he destroy my motivation :-)
I study his pictures to learn from Hans.
@Kesa: Thanks for your valuable and helpful tutorials !
SUBHAM GUPTA over 3 years ago
His renders do look very nice but they violate the dimensions constraint provided. We must restrict our design to 8"x3"x3"
SUBHAM GUPTA over 3 years ago
Honestly I feel 8"x3"x3" is too small
Abe Gladstone over 3 years ago
When you use GrabCAD Print to prepare the .Print file you can orient your model so that it fits that constraint box if need be.

I am just an old bugger with a mind full of ideas, ( watched my whole life sci fi series and loved them all) but all the dimension stuff and all other rules for this challenge....that is not my cup of tee.....I am happy to get all the other guys motivated in competing ....hope to see lots of great models .....

The URL above for USEFUL GUIDES AND TUTORIALS is broken. It is written as a "double URL' by accident. It should be: Printing Full-Color FEA Results on 3D Printers
Hans de Ridder over 3 years ago
If any of your guys wants to use one of my models and revise them to stand up to the requirements.....feel free to do so ...we just share the prize ghegheghe.....(just a print of 1 or 2 ships...) I believe this community is to help and assist other members...what is even better is to stop talking and start modeling....lets fill this challenge with great space ships...
FredSWUG over 3 years ago
It is an interesting challenge. I'll hopefully have a few models entered.
There's no sense in complaining about the rules and guidelines, but I do find them odd. Especially since this site is primarily focused on traditional CAD software, and less about colors, textures, and the artistic/sculpting programs which are used to apply textures, UV maps, and "paint" to 3D meshes.
Hans' models could/should be able to win hands down once scaled to fit the build envelope. But the trick is going to be applying color and texture to the models.
It looks like it is going to be time for many of us to learn some new software, and skills in the next three weeks if there is a desire to win, or at least enter something with a chance of winning.
A spaceship I recently rendered for fun is below. It has good details modeled into it, but it is hardly what I'd call "colorful". I'd hate for a spaceship to end up looking like a clown car just to win :) https://img.frl/jenu2

Can anybody explain te me what a GrabCad Swag is....I have looked it up on the internet....."Sure we are gay".....but I believe this is not it....Since i'm Dutch I am not familair with all the new English abriviations....
Marcio Kis Curzio over 3 years ago
I think that 'swag' is something like a different cool style and attitude. English is not my mother tongue so I can also be wrong, but that's my two cents into this subject.. lol. By the way, awesome model Hans!!! To me the best so far.
Adam Snow over 3 years ago
"Swag" is a term for (typically small) prizes or gifts given away by companies. This usually occurs at trade shows, but can happen anywhere.
Typical items include stickers, notebooks, pens, shirts, hats, water bottles, bottle openers, flashlights...etc.
The items are generally branded with the name of the company giving away the item(s), but that is not always true.
Kesa over 3 years ago
@Subham, Its a possibility that we may change this dimensions if this proves to be difficult to work with, I may talk to to the team and see if we can change that.
Kesa over 3 years ago
Im working with the Tech team to Fix the URLs for the Tutorials. I will fix them today.
Kesa over 3 years ago
What @Adam said is what we use for "swag". Shirts, water bottles, pens, bags etc..
FredSWUG over 3 years ago
"Size dosn't matter" right? If the build is limited to 8"x3"x3", just look at it as part of the design contest. How can you work with such a limitation?
8x3x3 isn't an odd size. This commercial model kit is 9"x2"x3": https://www.amazon.com/Bandai-Hobby-Garmillas-Warships-Model/dp/B009X3OI08/ref=sr_1_25?keywords=star+blazers+models&qid=1557177301&s=gateway&sr=8-25
If "real" kits are made and sold at this scale, it seems reasonable that we could one to meet the same limitations. That's what we do, make items based on constraints.

Hi, I've just exported my file in the VRML. format but none of my 3D modelling softwares can read the file, so I don't know if the shaders and textures were exported with the model. Could you please let me know if I've made the correct file with all the colors visable? (I rendered in VRED, what's the best export format for this software).
Thanks

If you need a file to see if your color data transferred I recommend downloading GrabCAD Print. It will show you if your files are 3D printable and have color as well.

Please add support for colored step files (AP214), OR colored STL files to a future version of GrabCAD Print. VRML and OBJ files are a nightmare to work with.
Hopefully the winner will be partially determined by who can create a model without error flags in GrabCAD Print. The tricky part of course being that GrabCAD Print will not repair colored models. I think I have an equal amount of time spent between modeling, and export/import/repairing :)

Why size is so limited? It appears like this printer has larger field:
Stratasys J750: 490 x 390 x 200 mm (19.3 x 15.35 x 7.9 in.)
Kesa about 3 years ago
We made it small because we want to save up on material. Possibly in the future we will make the limitations bigger.
Kirill Romanenko about 3 years ago
Is any transparent material supported?
And one more question, is it better to colorize surfaces in CAD where we do modeling, or in GrabCAD Print during pre-print setups?
I have never prepared a model for colored printing before :)
Kesa about 3 years ago
We do have Clear material in the J750 Printer. To color your material you can do it in Software such as Rhino but if your parts are separate you can color them in GrabCAD print.

question how do you estimate print time if GRABCAD print doesn't have the template for the Stratasys J750?
FredSWUG about 3 years ago
JordanT. It does have a template. Go to Add Printer - Add Printer Template - Stratasys Polyjet - Stratasys J750.
If it is not there, see if you have a recent release of GrabCAD Print.

Anyone notice the time difference? The contest officially ends May 27th, 2019 (23:59 EST.) But, the countdown timer says "about 8 hours left".
It is 12:45 EST now, so there should be "about 11 hours" remaining. I guess I'd better upload a model in about 8 hours to be safe.
Kirill Romanenko about 3 years ago
I am in trouble, AutoCAD can't export to any of supported format except STL, which does not preserve colors. Looking for workarounds...

The 23:59 deadline arrived four hours early. As of 20:00 no submissions are being accepted.
FredSWUG about 3 years ago
I noticed the grabcad-spaceship-design tag did not automatically get applied to my models when uploaded (via Firefox). I added the tag manually. It looks like all other 63 submissions have the tag, so maybe it just didn't apply to my models?
FredSWUG about 3 years ago
Hopefully all the colors in the models comes across. I noticed only a few VRML files have multiple colors when viewed in the GrabCAD 3D Viewer.
Personally, I found the VRML format challenging to work with, but all my models had color when uploaded. I also included the .Print files as a backup plan. It would be great to incorporate Step(214), and color STL support into GrabCAD Print
Chandler Welty about 3 years ago
Trying to upload my model at 8:15 PST (I realize I'm procrastinating) and it's saying it's closed. 8:15 PST should be 11:15 PST or 23:15 PST, so why is it saying the deadline is passed? Can someone fix this before the actual deadline passes so I can squeeze in?
Kirill Romanenko about 3 years ago
I uploaded my work, and it’s indicated as per May 28.
Also I doubt about color data, probably it was lost during conversion, even though i selected related options during conversion with Rhino.

Good news. If a colored vrml file is downloaded from GrabCAD, the colors are retained even if the GrabCAD viewer shows only a solid gray model.
I experimented with some VRML files tonight, and the GC Viewer only seems to display colors when the entire part is colored in SOLIDWORKS. Coloring features, or model faces does not work.

The main task of GrabCad is a community of engineers who help each other with 3d models, drawings, consultations. And the various events-it's a nice bonus. I believe you need to respect the time of the jury and if they are doing something in your opinion for a long time - they have every right to, since they are the organizers. Hans will confirm, other sites usually steal model precisely from here)))

FredSWUG about 3 years ago
The ten finalists are listed under the Results tab at the top of the page (just in case anyone doesn't know where to look).
FredSWUG about 3 years ago
Congratulations to the finalists.
During the contest I utilized a checklist to insure all requirements were met. Looking through the finalist models, there is only one entry that meets all the requirements (hint, it's the SRB-11).
Many of the entries do not include material/time estimates, the correct file format(s), are too large to fit the build envelope, or once scaled to fit have VERY thin walls (.010"-.020") which is not good for a Polyjet printer. It was not listed as a requirement, but errors in models would ideally have some weight.
My favorite designs which meet most of the requirements are the Alienannihilator, the G-S-S, and the NHSS.
To help deflect accusations of favoritism for my own entry, I will say that the SRB-11 is not my favorite model of my five entries.
Cad Cam about 3 years ago
Congratulations finalists! I think you can print more designs. There is also the possibility of scaling. @FredSWUG got in! :) And I see a lot of nice work, but I'm sure the jury's right decision.
Adam Snow about 3 years ago
wowo, The prizes were posted and known upfront. The decision of how much time to put into a model could be dictated by the value of the prize, but building a good model can be a reward on it's own.
These smaller challenges are a great idea. Without a need for expensive prizes, there can be more challenges to get more members involved.
Hopefully this mini-challenge was a successful test, and we'll see more in the future. I think a challenge to design some of the new/future GrabCAD Badges would be interesting. I'd be bad at it, but there are a lot of talented designers on GrabCAD that are a great resource for such work.
