Show off your skills and solve real design problems
This contest is sequel to LifeTrack Quick Connect Wheel challenge held in GrabCAD. We need you to design the entire backhoe for the Global Village Construction Set. It will mount on the LifeTrac using standard bobcat interface attachment.
LifeTrac: http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/LifeTrac
Standard Bobcat interhace attachment:
http://opensourceecology.org/w/images/b/b1/Universal-attachment-mount-specification-sae_j2513.pdf
As with all Open Source Ecology designs, the backhoe will need to follow the following principles:
1. Design for fabrication- as simple as possible to build.
2. Lifetime design
3. Intensive scalability - in the most fundamental fashion. This specification is designed to produce a Backhoe Construction Set. All arm sections, cylinders, hoses, and the bucket should be removable so they can be replaced with parts of different sizes as necessary - like a Lego set but for real machinery.
http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/Intensive_Scalability
The challenge here is to design for modularity - to design the part connections such that part interchangeability is not only possible, but also practical and possibly easy.
4. Extensive Scalability - additional arm sections can be added to extend the reach or increase the range of functionality to log handling, electromagnet operation for steel works, high materials handling, jack hammering, etc).
Specifications:
- See Industry Standard Backhoe for reference.
- Basic operation will leave the LifeTrac plate immobile vertically but may move with the curl of the quick attach plate for extra mobility if needed, though the latter should not be the main moving mechanism of the primary boom.
- Should use hydraulic cylinders, all of which will attach to Life Trac via hoses with quick couplers.
- Bucket should be quick-attach to the secondary arm, to enable easy re-tooling.
- Bucket should have removable teeth.
- Hoses should be used only at joints, and metal tubing should be used for lifetime design whenever flexibility is not required.
- Should include stabilizer legs to prevent the machine from tipping.
- Can mount in back of tractor and to front on the quick attach plate.
- Takes account of Life Trac weight distribution and rated dig force.
- Operator seat and control valves are included on the attachment.
- Control valve is quick-connect with 30 gpm quick couplers.
- Hydraulic valve spools: 1 stabilizer leg valve (tandem motion of stabilizer legs), Main boom, Secondary boom, Bucket curl, Allowance for bucket thumb (for grapples).
The basic model should have one boom, one secondary boom (stick), with an optional grapple (thumb) attachment, and one bucket, all of which can pivot individually
Digging Depth Minimum (L)- 3 m (9.8 feet)
Digging Depth Straight Wall minimum - 2.1 m (7 feet) (Capability of bucket to travel in a straight line down vertically. This involves pivoting at all 3 joints)
Reach From Swing Pivot minimum (K) - 4 m (13 feet)
Loading Height (J) - 2.7 m (9 feet)
Stabilizer Spread Transport Maximum (H) - 2 m (6.6 feet)
Stabilizer Spread Operating Minimum(G) - 2.9 m (9.5 feet)
Bucket Rotation 180 deg
Swing Arc 180 deg
Attachment Weight With 18-in. Bucket – Less than 2500lb (1137 kg)
Craning Capacity Minimum - 400 kg (880 lb)
Digging Force Using Bucket Cylinder - 2800 kg (6173 lb)
Backhoe System Relief Setting - 16500 kPa (2400 psi)
457 mm (18 inch) heavy duty bucket has minimum 0.142 m3 capacity (5 cu. feet)
610 mm (24") Heavy-Duty Buckets - has 0.093 m3 capacity (3.29 cu. feet)
Designs have to be in US units
Winning design will be chosen based on the design and functionality

DEADLINE
20 days
So the 19th of februari.
Adam Pohl (POHL3D) almost 13 years ago
20 days for a complete backhoe design? 20 months would be more reasonable...
Kim Villefrance almost 13 years ago
So if it were 20 months, you would be happy with 750/1000$ ?
Laszlo Jakab almost 13 years ago
When started this challenge? Last year? Because I am interedted in it but the time is too short.
Muhammad Bilal Ghaffar almost 13 years ago
Very nice site with really nice challenges. :-)
Kaspar Kiis almost 13 years ago
Sorry about the misunderstanding about the deadline. It has been extended. Feel free to ask any questions here and we will make sure they will be answered.

It should be noted that all steel stock should be in English units, as the build will take place in USA where metric materials are hard to come by.
Brianna Kufa almost 13 years ago
Yes, this is mandatory. Sorry, I wrote the rules and forgot that crucial detail. =) I'll have Kaspar change it.
However, most Open Source Ecology designs will eventually need to be translated to metric, so if both are included, it would be appreciated. (but not mandatory)
Troy almost 13 years ago
If I am reading this right your smaller bucket the 18" you want 5cu ft of volume? that cant be right. Is this an error?
Brianna Kufa almost 13 years ago
Troy, you are right. This is incorrect. Disregard the volume and make an 18" wide bucket.
Padurariu-
No, we will not accept entries only in metric, as we are building in the US, and it is far more expensive to buy metric steel here.

I only use AutoCAD and cannot produce additional formats like iges/step. Too bad really, because I could design a complete machine with removeable tracks that would quick fit a backhoe, loader, trencher and many implements. Also, what is the main fuel used in your industrial attempts? Let me know if you'd be interested in some really terrific ideas that might redesign your whole perspective.
Sincerely, David Warren

Quantum u can import ur file to other Cad softwares and then have those formats.
brisek almost 13 years ago
can i give you my design if i am using educational version of inventor ??
george peters almost 13 years ago
ok can someone explain the challenge in layman's terms.
do you want shop drawings, stress calculations, hydraulic schematics
material list, and assembly drawings?
what is the STEP or IGES?
every job is scalable but the stresses are exponential.
did you want to build one from what we supply or
just look and say yes this looks like what the major
equipment manufacturers sell and therefore if it
is presented without appearing to be proprietary or have
patents then no one has to do research.
this appears to be a request for 1000 hours of engineer's time
with chance of winning $1000 or one dollar an hour?
Troy almost 13 years ago
Where is your required (M) dimension? I do not see it.
Brianna Kufa almost 13 years ago
Troy, there is not a required dimesion for it. We used the dimension illustration from another tractor, so that was left on the drawing.
Brianna Kufa almost 13 years ago
George,
The shop drawings will be produced later from the model. Hydraulic Schematic will be developed by us. For now its just a model, but basic calc's must be done so it can reach required strength for digging. Step is a common CAD format. Yes, it is a lot of work for $1000.
Briesk,
Yes, as long as you can get it in the required format.
Mike Perakis almost 13 years ago
Can you provide some more information on the relief setting? Does this refer to the relief valve of the hydraulic pump?. Are we supposed to show it somehow in the model?
Brianna Kufa almost 13 years ago
Hello Mike, you do not need to show it. This is for when we are installing the hydraulics and purchasing materials, and was accidentally transferred to the challenge.
Kyle B over 12 years ago
A design with less than 3 changes required before manufacturing? For $1000 USD? That's one hell of a deal.
Laszlo Jakab over 12 years ago
I don't find my modell among the competitors, but I uploaded it with 15 mins before the deadline. Any idea?
