A question about the drawers is there an optimal length or range of desired lengths? i.e. 3 at 15cm, 2 at 20cm several no smaller than 55mm...ect...just so we don't bog down our design with drawers that are not needed or have all the wrong sizes....nothing hard but some guidelines...

Second question. Case body materials? is there a reference? Carbon FIber laminated would have a different wall thickness than say double walled Poly Pro. Normally I don't ask for this kind of specifics but we are going to need every mm we can get but if it is not cost effective on your end .....

@jonathan yea man; love to ride. My favorite race I ride is Virginia City Grad Prix http://www.vcgp.com/ 25 mile loops/laps Balls to the walls fun!!

Every dirtbiker is also a "docside engineer", so as many times I've wrecked & repaired, I might have a small advantage...maybe.. :)

Right on Tom! we used to travel into the US a lot for AMA races in NewYork state, Walton, Silversprings. Dirt bike, mountain bike and BMX etc. These sports have some of the nicest and best people out there. It's so true, I think if you're into that sort of stuff, engineering and tinkering goes hand in hand.

I started out on KDX80, then RM80, then CR125, now I'm riding 160cc four strokes, I custom built the frames. I'm free riding though, to me it's all about having fun, no pressure)

Is there a preferred production method? do they want sheet metal fabrication, injection molding, fiberglass parts, carpentry?,They probably have a production shop they already use, if so what is their specialty? or do they do this all in house? or are they looking to branch out and are selecting a production shop? what is the budget for each box. There's a big difference between a 1,000$ item and a 500$ item in terms of features. these questions will help us design the best toolbox while keeping in your budget and needs.

Hello everyone and thanks for practical questions! Keep them coming!

The goal of this challenge is to have a “ready for production” solution.

    PRODUCTION COST
This product is aimed for everybody who likes to have fun with bikes, karts, rc vehicles etc. and also likes to repair and service the vehicles by themselves. It should be an affordable alternative to a toolbox. So when it comes to production costs you should think how much an average enthusiast is willing to pay for your product and divide the price by 3 to get the production cost.
We are aiming for a product that would be affordable for wide audience in its niche market. Depending on the design and features I would say that sale price between 100...200 USD/EUR would be reasonable. You are welcome to debate me.

    METHODS OF PRODUCTION
I wouldn’t limit this down to certain materials. I assume the production cost will limit that. We plan to find a suitable manufacturer after choosing the best design that meets the requirements.

    DRAWER(S)
The dimensions of the storage space for tools and spare parts should be approximately 550x400x55mm (WxDxH). 55mm is a minimum height. It would be practical to have some smaller compartments for spare parts so they don’t get mixed with bigger tools. Let’s say 3 at approx. 20x12cm would do it. It would be very nice if the tools won’t make much noise while transporting the case.

Use of standard parts such as drawer sliders, hinges, handle etc. is favoured. It would be nice if you would refer to the source of standard elements in the description.

Dimensions of goggles are roughly 200x100x95mm (Oakley Crowbar).

@David Pedersen thank you for uploading that good looking spray can.

David Pedersen almost 7 years ago

"You are welcome to debate me."

    Hmm... I'll give a try :)

    First of all.
I think there are quite many wishes:
    1. Lightweight
    2. Rigid and stable
    3. Dust and weatherproof when folded
    4. Pocket for goggles
    5. Fixtures for two spray cans and a paper roll
    6. Universal mounts for tools
    7. Drawer(s)
    8. Alternative to a toolbox
    9. Smaller compartments for spare parts
    10. No noise from tools during transport
    11. A sales price around 100-200$/€

If i saw a mobile workbench/toolbox with all these features included for just 200$ in a store, the first thing i whould think: cheap chinese product, that whould only last 1 day in use.
I dont think you whould have your company name on such a product.

What you are wishing for is a quality made product, and they dont come cheap.

"We are aiming for a product that would be affordable for wide audience in its niche market."
I whoulden say "bikes, karts, rc vehicles" is a niche market -its huge market!, and 100-200$/€ in those hobbies are nothing.
A nice set of quality screwdrivers cost more than that...
But just think if you made a high quality product, you whould have a huge market potential in most of the world: every type of pro craftsman, house owners plus the ones you mentioned.

Why is Dewalt eg. a million dollar company?
Because its cheap? or because of the "money worth" quality?

"It should be an affordable alternative to a toolbox"

Its like looking for a tent in an outdoor shop, and then ask the seller: do you have a cheap alternative to a house...
    Sorry couldnt help it :)
    ---------------------------------

And i'll backup Jonathans question regarding royalty opportunity, and my reason for that is:
Your ask for a production ready solution, that hopefully contains all of your wishes above.
This it what alot of us do for clients at work daily. And that cost quite more than (if your very lucky) 700$.
Its almost like you want us to do all the work, by using existing parts and include the links for them too. And with the links and our files, the only thing your need to do is: find a company, send the files, recive the finished parts, order all of the fittings and voila...
    You have a finished product...

By the way, it whould love to hear if your company name is about quality or quantity?

But what the heck its a challenge, and i'm up for it. :)

That was my 2 cents ;)

    Best regards

    Dave, on the nose )

I think there is NO problem trying to meet all the requirements...., been there done that. I feel confident I can meet the demands and produce a world class product. I'm sure other designers feel the same way.

But I do hesitate sometimes with certain "challenges", given the fact when a company plans to take my design into production...... and potentially has the chance to earn large dollar sales with it. I do expect reasonable compensation. I don't need a million dollars, but if I offer up a very well thought out solution, along with support for the solution during production, I would expect more than 700$ ) on let's say a hundred thousand+ profit margin. In the business world, this is usually the way it works. Just watch the show Shark Tank, why would a designer do all the work and not be compensated appropriately.

Because seriously, a well designed product, such as this could potentially be scooped up by the automotive crowd! Guys love this sort of thing! If it's done right, it could be a big seller.

There's nothing wrong with competing in competitions for fun, for the sake of the challenge, monetary reward or not......but when you're talking about putting something into production and there's a large potential for profit, then you're really dealing with a different beast all together. I'm definitely not asking anyone to boycott anything, but be aware of what you're worth also. I just hope other designers become aware of this, nothing wrong with competing but at the same time, don't sell your skills short.

For the Grab Cad clients who just want a quick ideation to get the ball rolling, that's great, and you will probably get that for 700$ but if you want a thorough, professionally designed product with support all the way through to manufacturing, you gotta realize that it will cost a lot more than a few hundred dollars.

SO here's the deal! I'm putting a call out to anyone who wants to work in a term on this product design....I will go no more than 4 people, but preferably 2 designers. I'm confident that in a team, we can produce a design for Rabaconda that will sell world wide. I have full teleconferencing capabilities via webcam and skype, location is not an issue. dedicated 24/7 cable internet connectivity with virtually zero downtime. Let me know on this message board or PM me! HERE's the catch, I will only do this if Rabaconda agrees to a royalty opportunity, let's say 1 to 2% of unit cost for each of the team members. We can assess our strengths and weaknesses upon team formation, preferably I'd like to work with someone who has experience in product design, or preferably experience with launching a product. If you don't know me, please review my portfolio and background to see if it would be a good fit, then get in TOUCH ASAP! )

    Cheers!

Carlos, even "production ready" is not really an issue if it only a few "one off" units end up being made, but Rabaconda intends to mass market this item for profit. In this kind of scenario, the compensation needs to reflect the outcome, it's only fair. Everyone has to realize what's at stake.

Mind you Rabaconda does bare most of the risk but it's like that in any design deal. I'm confident that I, and other GrabCad designers can produce something that has great sales viability. Tõnu Kallast et el? what are your thoughts....get back to us.

We are willing to offer royalty opportunity to the designer or team whose work will go into production. However, in this case, we would expect that co-operation will continue after the completion of the challenge. Tasks such as preparation of technical drawings and design changes to meet manufacturers possibilities (if necessary) would be expected to be carried out in order to receive a 1,5% royalty. Some contribution to finalise the designing process. How does that sound?

    Tõnu,

First of all, thank you for considering this and we all appreciate it greatly! Unfortunately, I'm not really in the position to speak on behalf of GrabCad or the community or to negotiate rates and lock in a deal), BUT @ 1.5% I personally consider this a fair deal. So for me personally, I accept this. Perhaps you might want to contact Sara Sigel, who is in charge of administration on GrabCad, to relay the changes to your reward structure to her.

You can rest assured that you will receive very high quality designs from the designers and engineers here on GrabCad and full support, through to manufacturing. We want you succeed and sell 100,000+ units!

David Pedersen thanks for taking up the price topic. Would anyone else like comment on that?
It would be difficult to evaluate and select a winner between 100$ and 1,000$ items. Most certainly the second one would be better in every sense but will it sale? This is an important argument but difficult to evaluate. Also selecting winners would be way more complicated and subjective matter.
The idea of adding “low cost” to design guidelines is to receive designs with reasonable production price for its features not a low-quality product.

It would be practical if the case could be easily wall-mounted. It could be closed and locked vertically and while locked it can’t be unmounted from the wall. Legs are still necessary though for outdoor use. Keep in mind that the ground isn’t always flat.

    Tõnu,

Excellent. I typically would negotiate but I think what you're offering is fair and I'm not really in the position to negotiate on behalf of GrabCad ). Just mention the decision to Sara Sigel and she'll take care of things.

I think your proposed price points would be about right, max 289$US. Forget 1000$, I could a used dirt bike for that much. Anything more just isn't justified in my opinion. Now the goal is to maximize quality while minimizing cost to you....always a challenge.

@ Ulti, it's 1.5% of cost of manufacturing, as far as I know ).

So figure they're product sells for 200$US, we aim at making the cost being 1/3 of that. So around 66.6$, 1.5% of 66$ = 1$.

So the winner will make 1$ on every unit sold. Doesn't sound like much but per chance this product goes viral.......well, you can do the math.

I'm also thinking something like this would be an excellent candidate for selling bulk orders to hardware or home improvement centers. One that comes to mind here in Canada would be Canadian Tire.

It's excellent that a company utilizing GrabCAD is even willing to negotiate royalties for the design of their product. These challenges have been far too much of a one way street in that regard, so any change is fantastic. However, word of warning to any talented CAD monkeys thinking of dropping the time and effort going ahead. Get an agreement in writing, make certain all parties are held legally accountable for their part of the deal. Don't let yourselves get burned and your hard work bought for chump-change, all based on some quick comment posted to a message board.

    @Tõnu Kallast
To answer your request for opinions on the reward, I would say it's all about balance. The current format of these challenges is pretty fair in my opinion, you offer your prize and it is up to us to determine if it is worth our time. If the pool of prizes is not very enticing, the quality of the entries and quantity will be poor, yet you will still need to pick a winner and award the prizes. If you offer a substantially better package, you will attract more entries and each individual will be more inclined to put effort in.

I would not say there is a fair or unfair way about it, it's mainly concerned with improving your own position, especially because we are not required to participate but you are still required to award the prize. If you have demanding expectations and offer a pair of movie tickets as the prize, there is nothing wrong with that but you will probably not get many good entries.

For the current proposal, I would use the challenge more as a screening process, offer a lower prize but with the offer of a contract to the winner to develop a further concept and offer higher compensation to go with that contract. As you said, you need to assure that the winner participates in redesigns/technical drawings etc, so you should not offer royalties until you know that the winner will cooperate with your needs. You wouldn't want to offer royalties to the winner, have them stop answering your emails two weeks later, then sue you two years later when you have a successful product that you had to hire and pay someone else to develop.

Agree with your comments Chanson. This is where a thorough and concise design brief comes in handy. I don't have time for this competition unfortunately, although some of my first thoughts on a design would of involved some injection moulded parts, no mention of whether tooling costs would be allowed or not.

That GE competition looked great, sad I missed it.

Rabaconda and GC, why have the criteria changed again??....this always happens mid way through a design competition....majorly unprofessional. Causes us all to have to go back and rework everything. I'm really not impressed. Slight changes, yes, acceptable, but this is like designing a whole different animal now, again, not the first time that this has happened. My respect level is dropping........

what sort of case can be built for 80$ cost with good quality....??? you do know a cheap bulk order fold able leg set is 80$+tax alone..... so good luck with that costing estimate.

sorry, I must backtrack a bit, I realize now that the product cost, roughly 1/3 of proposed sale price 200$, so 66$ was something that we should have been aware of from the beginning. Duh, I think I even mentioned it in an earlier post....**doink!

I think I only picked up on it because it was updated and actually written into the criteria as 80$. So let me apologize about commenting about the "changes" to the criteria, I might have jumped the gun slightly.......

HOWEVER, the more I research, and move forward with my design, the more I realize that 80$ cost is just not enough....so I'd have to stick to my previous comments on that aspect. Perhaps some designers will be able to figure it out, but from my initial rough costing estimates, 80$ cost and good quality unit, just doesn't seem doable. Anyway, gotta think about this.......

  • Jonathan Brazeau

Jonathan Brazeau almost 7 years ago

    LMAO@David..... on the nose.....

The only thing though that I have to apologize for is that I actually did realize the unit cost would be roughly 60 to 80$, so it's not like that aspect was updated out of nowhere.....so my apologese to GC, Sara et al. My bad (

But what I didn't realize is how this cost would be just incredibly *ehem....unfeasible... Dave, by the way, I don't even think you could do cardboard and FB resin for that price. HAHAHHA. Resin is like 50-100$ a pop for a good sized can, here in Canada! :P

Rabaconda, this is a fairly big project, you really have to figure out what you want here if you want some professional solutions offered. I can't tell you right now, none of the proposed designs will meet the 80$ costing estimate. And what your asking for CAN potentially be made for that cost but we're talking, the cheapest $hit you've ever seen in your life, no one will buy it. It's time to get hip and get serious now. Get on this message board and give us your business plan, how you expect to market it, what exactly you are looking for, because after all, maybe you're looking for cheap shit after all.

Very rough estimate, to incorporate all the items that you're asking for, a few hundred dollars cost at the MINIMUM, figuring in a few injection molded parts, bulk ordered items such as locks and handles.

I can build you something for 80$, but like Dave said, it will be made from toilet paper, cardboard and FB resin.

I agree with them that the price point, especially for low-volume batches, is far too low and thought that since I started the challenge.....Having said that I continued as this isn't the first time a customer has wanted BMW-engineering for VW-cost.....I figured I'd make the best design I could without special space-age material and let them decide.....I'm just the "designer".....someone else's job to market it....

I'm thinking about leaving this challenge, its not going to happen for 80$...

Your 3 Minute Mousse changer cost 258€
And now you want a complete mobile workstation at the same retail price?
Maybe the tire changer cost around 20-60$ too make, but its just square tubing.
Your dream workbench require a little more than that, and then there is the assembly time...

These type of workbenches is manufactured as a "noname" workbench,

And this product are leaving the factory in HUGE quantities to all over the world! Therefore the cheap price, but it lacks almost all the features your want.

Right, Dave, thanks for backing me on this. Those workbenches are also super simple in construction, square tubing and cheap a$$ holed board. A foldable case has soooo much to it, hinges, handle, folding legs in most case, most likely a few injection molded parts etc.

Again, 80$ MIGHT be doable, but it's gonna be one weak ass design. Not any of the entries posted so far will hit the 80$ costing mark IMO.

PRODUCTION COST. If you find that recommended cost of $80 is limiting you to create the best design with good quality and all the features then go above it. The requirement was applied because the question raised in the comments here and also to simplify later evaluation. The work bench David Pedersen referred on walmart costs no more than $30 to produce where it was made. What costs $160 to produce in Canada or Denmark, costs $80 to produce in some other countries without losing in quality. I can tell that from my own experience and you most likely know that already. That makes the production cost requirement blurry and it wasn’t an easy decision. We will have to estimate the cost of each design by ourselves anyway in evaluation process.
WALL MOUNTED for both, storage AND use would be nice.
MEDIUM SIZED BATCHES. Let’s say roughly 3000 pcs. minimum yearly qty.
PAPER ROLL Dimensions vary a lot. It’s really not important to fit it inside the case. It could be something really simple to hold it under the case or wherever you like. Another practical feature would be a waste bag holder. We have always taped a plastic waste bag to our prototype table. And maybe a hook for hanging a helmet to save the working space. But these features are not primary in this challenge and can be added later.

This weekend I attended a motocross event, with full access to the pits / workshops etc. All of the toolboxes and bench racks etc are all fairly simple sheet steel assemblies with basic features. These things were all battered and bruised, kicked around, bikes ride into them..haha. Helmet Hook is a great idea, most bikers tend to leave hanging on a handle bar. Spanners by far the main tool used...loads of em. Just wanted to give a little imput :P Good luck everyone!!

There's nothing like the shock and awe of dumping a bunch of hot renders and designs at the end of a challenge ).

I went for the "ideation" and "process" approach with this client, literally a month devoted to this project. I'm so enthusiastic about this whole "portable workshop" concept in general I think if Rab doesn't pick me up, I might try to pursue it on my own. Or at least build myself a crude prototype. It really is a hot little idea and a much needed tool in any racers or hobbyists kit.

I wouldn't mind most of any these for my garage when i work on my CBR's. Either way alot of cool idea's some seem feasible as DIY projects.

You are correct, my bad i just glanced through the main pictures and not look at the profiles themselves up close. Then again that's how i would see them in a magazine or webpapge unfortunatly. But guessing you ride too lol (that was rhetoricali saw the pictures). wouldn't mind seeing something like your's in a store though you got to add a wheels option maybe through one of the handles of one side. when out most often buddies don't mind helping you carry. But get home and wham not a soul in sight and those tool boxes get heavy after a day (or two) of riding. Normally i just use the tail of my truck and keep my tools in the back then again most out here do that.

yeah, tailgate garage always works but it would be nice to have something that's a little more portable though, hence this design contest ). For sure, I didn't focus on wheel myself but others did. I strayed away from it just because my design has quite a few bells and whistles on it as it is so just didn't want to up the cost....plus, my take on wheels is that they would have to be pneumatic, a small set of plastic wheels isn't going to help much at the dirt track.....

Sam, thanks again man. Nail on the head, a few other descent designs, with good potential........quite a few designs that would make great hobby equipment, lighter duty stuff...but for moto, you know as well as I do, $hits gotta be tough, I feel mine is the most "Moto" relevant. At least that was the design intent :)

Yours Jonathan is defiantly one of the top 2 or 3 designs, would not mind seeing this one on motorcycle super store or even at cyclegear. Also kind of dig Twist for its simplicity but manufacturing the shells might be a bit expensive extrusion that deep and all. The PC2 would be nice a nice one too if stability could be increased. Either way good luck to all, would be nice to see on in stores by next year that was affordable for us lower end racers/riders and isn't a rollaway.

I've probably said this somewhere else but I see a lot of great designs that would be a great fit for let's say the hobbyist, RC enthusiast etc. but I just don't see them being that useful in an automotive setting, where heavy parts and large forces are involved. Like Sam mentioned, I think it comes down to splitting up the categories into light duty for the hobbyist and weekend warrior, and more heavy duty, automotive, mechanic and race specific, which I believe mine would fit into.

just pointing out that this leg design is essentially what I came up with, however I posted it along time before, imitation, a great form of flattery. However, the sockets seem to just magically come out from the bottom panel, are they molded in? are they welded on? sort of important to understand the details, after all, these things need to built in real life.

I like this design for the "heavy duty" category, I think it has a lot of good things going for it, but I think the legs would be a problem out on the track, good for a flat leveled garage though......

and this is my opinion, we have chosen some wonderful projects with eighty dollars but that can not be produced by the complexity of the projects, rabaconda should consider this before choosing the finalists ...... I read in the post that requires you rabaconda Winners of the drawings, laser cutting, etc. ... I had them in my projects already entered and I thought it was a requirement of the project to give the necessary documentation, even the parts that I designed are made from sheet and you can not develop ... if you draw a viable project then what's the draw?

Congratulations to all the finalists, there are a good variety of Designs from simple Basic designs to Stylish detailed designs.
One thing the judges need to bear in mind in selecting the final winners is that there was a requirement for a unit cost of around USD80.
Im pretty sure some of the final designs would cost considerably more than this, so no matter how well thought out and detailed these designs might be, if these Designs are going to cost much more that USD80 then I would see this as a disadvantage.
I have entered competitions in the past with detailed designs only for the requirements to be updated at a later stage with a target cost which then renders some designs (including my own) as being unsuitable from a cost point of view.
As Rabaconda stated from the start that the unit cost should be around USD80 then its only fair that Designs that meet this and other requirements are considered worthy winners.
I know this may exclude some of the best looking designs in this contest, but if we are to Design to a cost target from day one then this must be adhered to when selecting the winners.

I understand what your saying Ian but what about the people, like myself, who were already so deeply committed into the design from the start of the challenge. Then, find the requirements had been updated, so the design they've been working on was null. Knowing all the facts from the beginning is major for any designer and sets the tone of the thought process involved. It's easy to sit on one side of the fence an point out things on the other, because that's where you're looking. I've asked the question and the answer is this; The designs will be judged by material cost, production cost, appearance, function, and unit cost. The averages from these elements will determine the decision. That is what I understand from the feedback I've received. Rabaconda, Sara, or EXO bike may correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, good luck to all finalist and I've really enjoyed this challenge.

I tried to keep my design as cheap as possible by using Aluminium Extrusions and sheet. These are easier to use when making prototypes. All plastic components in my design are small to keep tooling cost at a minimum, I cant see any of these larger designs in plastic coming even close to the $80 unit cost even if they built 10,000 of them. Tooling in China is cheap but if a tooling cost is $100K then it may cost you another $50-100K just to tune it in to get the quality part you are after.

Beaning a racer the design needs to be really tough, stable, customizable. Most Designs will fail on race day, pits are often on uneven ground in the off road world. Some times we have to walk a Kilometre just to get our gear from the Van to the Pits due to location, wheels are also very import. weight from tools and spares I carry and by 5-8 kgs for tools and up to 5 more for spares depending on what kind of event it is.
I would have liked to included a vice and a LED light in my design but out about the contest 10 days before the deadline.

Thanks for the opportunity to enter this competition there are a lot of good designs, good luck to all.

    Cheers Mike

@ Rab, I’m ready to move forward with this project ASAP. Sara will have my personal contact info, or feel free to PM also. I think one of the next steps will be to figure out how to make a super cheap prototype to hash out the kinks, and then we can start to source suppliers and get some more refined costs on paper. lol...if anyone is still following......lol..

    QUICK UPDATE!!

Tonu and I have been doing a lot of research, hashing out details in skype meetings(Skype, coolest thing ever) and so far, the things we've learned and the progress we've made has been outstanding, things are moving forward at the right pace also. We're slowly wrapping up our costing estimates, finalizing the design prior to prototyping. It looks like things are going to be a little more expensive then originally forecasted but we're going to work with what we have and make the best of it and, at the minimum, we plan to have one, two, possibly three prototypes to display and test among ourselves and the public, to get feedback from everyone. We should be starting the builds in no more than a few weeks to a month or two! We're pretty excited to start ordering parts and getting a few prototypes to play with.......... stay tuned.

Thanks guys, glad to see people are still following this one....

Well, we're not out of the woods quite yet. The costing for all the bulk order parts has been going pretty smoothly, we've research a bunch of suppliers from Canada and US, Germany and in China and the prices seem about right. Things are falling into place on that end of the spectrum.

So, the the big hurdles now are figuring out if we want to go ahead with the honeycomb panel design or not, the initial estimates from US companies have been fairly expensive so this area might need a slight re-think. Our main focus right now is working on getting the estimates for all the sheet metalwork for the main case. If anyone knows of a good "all under one roof" company that can do this, feel free to let us know, automation, CNC sheet metal fabrication is preferred. For now, I have my sight aimed at a company about 4 hours from my place in Toronoto Canada, http://www.triplemetal.com/. But we're definitely shopping around.

So for now, the plan is to at least get the prototypes done and do some testing, it will give us a chance to do some hands on market research, get some feedback and see whether it's actually financially viable to move forward into mass production.

I plan to do a detailed blog about the whole process in maybe 6 months to a year from now. I'll chronicle all the steps we took, the timelines, the setbacks, tips and tricks, what not to do etc. etc. It should be really helpful for designers out there.

Taro, could be a little while before they're on store shelves but the prototypes should be coming along soon enough. )
