Show off your skills and solve real design problems
500 Group is pleased to work together with the GrabCAD team to offer the community an incredible challenge to design the body of a supercar currently undergoing testing in the UK’s “F1 belt” and scheduled for a 2013 launch.
Developed under a General Motors special-projects supply agreement, the cars use all GM performance parts hardware and feature the GM V8 line of E-Rod LS3, LS7 and mighty 638hp supercharged LS9 engines.
Prizes include $3500 in cash as well as the possibility of additional work and invitations to select test locations in Europe, North Africa and the USA. Most of all this is an opportunity to help create a significant new automobile.
There are 2 body challenges. Members are encouraged to submit entries in both categories.
Challenge 1 / Street
• Design balance and an integrated appearance is the primary challenge for a street body along with a signature element. Street cars are a reflection of their owners. Customers must imagine themselves driving the car.
Challenge 2 / Track
• Think LMP, an opportunity to create a body sculpted by airflow and the track, be bold, submissions must remain street legal and practical
Questions may be submitted in the open forum here and we will try to answer all questions unless the question has been previously asked or the answer is considered confidential.
By downloading the contest files and or making submission(s) to the contest in order to be eligible for goods prizes and other consideration as stated under the terms and rules of the contest, contestant represents to be the sole author of the submission(s) and agrees that the submission(s) and any and all intellectual property contained therein are assigned to and becomes the property of the contest sponsor 500 Group Inc
Work from first principles, have a functional or visual justification for every curve and feature in your submission
Pay attention to Aero for speed and safety. These vehicles exceed 225mph / 360kph
Imagine how wind leaves the body, the purpose of the wind and how it moves through the car
Is your design timeless? Avoid styling elements that are short lived
Does your design have a visual ‘hook’? A subconscious element that define it and makes it memorable like a song
Visibility from the cabin is important especially the traditional supercar blind spot the rear 3/4
Styling cues closely associated with another manufacturers brand are to be avoided
Be practical, ground clearance is necessary at 4 ¾” / 120mm, imagine kerbs and parking lots
If necessary, the nose section, tail section, windscreen, mirror and wing may be modified although their general principle should be maintained
Lights and legalities may be mounted to the nose and tail sections
The windscreen and side window baselines do not have to be your baselines, although the beltlines are already reasonably high
The car is a targa convertible, i.e. the center roof panel is removable and this should be considered
This is a closed wheel design, no motorcycle style fenders for this submission please
Use simplicity and an overarching visual element for cohesiveness. Use detailing and subtle elements such as creasing to draw the viewers’ eye where you want it to go
Make it aggressive, clean and beautiful
Submit your solid model files
Submit Renders; minimally a front ¾ and a rear ¾ in both black and silver bodies to ensure parity between submissions. Employ a realistic perspective
Size your renders for print and review in 8 ½ x 11 or A4
All body submission must be on the chassis-in-white available for download
Winning design will be chosen by GrabCAD community by likes on the model
All the models have to be public
Team entries are welcome
You can submit several designs
Only models uploaded to GrabCAD library will participate in the competition
Tag your model with “supercarbodychallenge”
The Challenge starts 1st March 2012 and ends 9th April 2012 23:59 Last Time Zone
Models can be done in any CAD software as long as a Parasolid XT or IGES with original software files are provided
Competition winner will be announced in GrabCAD’s blog

Need a SW2011 version of "chassis in white".
Supercar System about 13 years ago
For SW 2011 and earlier please use the parasolid X_T file, Thank you / 500 Group
CCG about 13 years ago
we saw those files...unfortunatly the conversion gives some errors and then solidworks fails to recognize some features that leading to software blocking.
Tobias Mattsson about 13 years ago
Tried using those files but then i have to try and add all material data on my own, and thats alot of work.
Tobias Mattsson about 13 years ago
@5G: You could save it in STEP 214 version so that i could remake the features on my own.

Why always only solidworks? Can you upload a iges o a pro/engineer compatible version, please

STL format for exchange files between different CAD systems?
Supercar System about 13 years ago
Hi Chris S, there are $4,100.00 USD in total prizes between the challenges and the voting, likely contract employment for engineers displaying talent, not just the winners and we're working on an invite to physical product testing, thank you

STL format for exchange files between different CAD systems?.....
That is what I also thought, STL does not help a lot :-)
Matteo Marchiorato about 13 years ago
I'm happy with this challenge, I really like that you give everyone the opportunity to demonstrate their skills.
I ask politely, you can have a file in step?
thanks
Supercar System about 13 years ago
We should have files in all popular 3D formats by the morning (U.S) Thanks for the patience
For sketchup users the best way may be to convert the chassis file to 3ds.
If any member can do that and post it we'll add it to the available downloads, this would be much appreciated, thank you

Hi David, please read requirements, wheels stay, thank you
Matt Perez about 13 years ago
Im not sure if the surfaces are missing or not, but will there only be 1 radiator on the left side with a trans cooler in front of it?
In your specs you say a min of 4.75" ground clearance but the model only has 4.2 from the tire to the bottom of the chassis. If we design our bodies above this, the renders might look funny. Can we stick with 4.2"?
Are the 8 holes in the rear of the car for exhaust exits? is this a requirement?
thanks!
david about 13 years ago
Are we supposed to make a body with all the fixing points to attach it to the chassis or just a kind of shell to show what it would look like?
Supercar System about 13 years ago
Hi Matt, good questions:
There are radiators on both side of various functions, however the overall assembly size on each side does not exceed what is represented
The body work can go to the bottom plane of the chassis but not lower (4.2") in reality the chassis has a forward pitch but this is ignored for this purpose
The 2 center holes are for exhaust exits, the outer holes are for high air pressure relief, there should be venting here but you can change the shape if you like
Supercar System about 13 years ago
Hi David
Fastening the body to the chassis is not a concern at all at this stage
Supercar System about 13 years ago
3DS conversion request, if anyone can create a 3DS file for Sketchup users or even a file native to or importable to Sketchup that would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Must we stick to the windscreen shape or do we have some freedom to reshape it? In other words are you using a standard windscreen or will you make a custom one based on the winning design? Thanks.
Supercar System about 13 years ago
Please read the requirements:
If necessary, the nose section, tail section, windscreen, mirror and wing may be modified although their general principle should be maintained
Sasank Gopinathan about 13 years ago
hi, i noticed that the CAD model has over 1000 surface bodies when imported into solidworks.... some of them are very small. can i delete some of these small surfaces and any other hidden ones that won't appear while rendering the exterior model? I just wanted to know, as the high number of surface bodies is making my solidworks lag. :)
Matteo Marchiorato about 13 years ago
Hi, is possible propose new design whit Rear Spoiler?
Duane de Gruchy about 13 years ago
I'm with Sasank, my SW had all but ground to a halt - I deleted the tyres and brakes and replaced them with similar parts from GrabCAD, pulling a lazy 10mb out of the part file. I hope that's OK guys, but needed to do it so I can start modelling!
Supercar System about 13 years ago
For SW users there are a couple ways to speed the program,
1 make a copy of the chassis file and mark it (chassis B)
2 open the original chassis file (chassis A) and select all chassis surfaces that are not relevant to you body styling and suppress them, leave only a very few outer surface references, you do not need 99% of the file at this stage
2 take all the suppressed surfaces and put them in their own folder for easy management
3 create your body
4 for fast viewing create an assembly and put both chassis A and B into it
5 once your are satisfied with your body, if you want to work just in the part file, unsuppress the suppressed folder
Supercar System about 13 years ago
Ciao Matteo, this question already answered in the 'requirements' the answer is yes

Your Given Chases is used For Both Car (Street/Racing) ?
jaydeep n about 13 years ago
I Think this Chases is only For.....Street Car...So...wats For Racing Car......
Supercar System about 13 years ago
Hi, the same chassis is both for the street and the track, the 2 body challenges should be for 2 completely separate designs, the street car is a little more conservative but still visually very striking, the track car is the opportunity to employ more aggressive styling like LMP cars for example... Both cars are targa ie the roof comes off. These are ultralight weight supercars but not luxury cars and the chassis allows styling that isn't possible with a normal chassis, this should be exploited for both bodies.

What frame should be used to design the prototype street ?
Supercar System about 13 years ago
there is only one frame

Tobias Mattsson about 13 years ago

CCG about 13 years ago
what's with the private entry's.....i hate when this happends...we should al enjoy seing other peoples work.
Supercar System about 13 years ago
All contestants, please find some additional direction below:
-The front and rear boxes do not have to be hidden and can be exposed but integrated into your form if desired,
-The frame is minimalist and allows for aggressive styling elements that can allow cuts deep into the form, this is unusual and should be taken advantage of
-A successful body and design works with the frame not against it, there are clues in the file if you look for them, we can't divulge more unfortunately
-The street body is for a supercar, supercars grab attention immediately in a very aggressive manner.
-The track cars closest cousin is LMP, please Google if you are unaware of this phrase
-Both solution should be bold, aggressive and beautiful
Good luck to everyone
Darren McKeage about 13 years ago
Great competition. Question on the voting and maybe you've already answered this, but since the winner is decided by the 'likes' will the voting begin once the submission deadline is up so everyone has their vehicle posted with an equal amount of exposure or has the voting already begun? As it would seem if someone posted on the last day, they'd only have one day to receive votes. Thanks.

Anthony Samboer about 13 years ago
Hi Kaspar. How will the voting work exactly? Will it officially commence after the 2nd of April? This would probably be more fair to those who upload the designs later or on the last day. What do the other engineers think? Also will there be an equal prize for the street car and the race car?
Kaspar Kiis about 13 years ago

Leonardo Lopez-Mobilia about 13 years ago
Yes, as Madridisimo88, I also work with 3DS Max and have problems exporting into STEP/IGES unless I model it in NURBS, something that would be much more complicated since I have always modeled in Polygons, mesh and I will have to learn it to be able to make it correctly. Is there a way to provide an OBJ or STL maybe?
Thanks...
Leo
Supercar System about 13 years ago
Daron: this is the wing that will be used but you can change it read the regulations.. the strip on top is where the tinted anti-sun strip goes
Christian: no roll cage change, example is an early internal generation
Lukasz: yes you can make a model in anything you like I believe
Miljenko: using sketchup is fine there is a sketchup download also
Mark: we'll upload a DXF if we can standby
Lenonardo: there is an STL available for download, well upload OBJ if we can
Don't forget to try the print & sketch PDF available for download
Remember there are 2 completely different challenged, there are NO LMP entries yet but the prizes are the same! enter both.
Thank you everyone
Leonardo Lopez-Mobilia about 13 years ago
I am sorry, I think I didnt explain myself correctly. What I meant was if we can supply an STL file at the end for you to use or review. I already downloaded the STL file and I am using it but to be able to give you guys the finished model in IGES, I need to model in NURBS and not polygons, since there is no good software that can can cleanly convert the mesh into NURBS later. They all do a sloppy job and the model comes out looking ugly.
Thanks...

We have had some terrific submission on the street entry, but the the track entry is not only a little more fun in our opinion but currently wide-open for a winner as there have only been 2 or 3 acceptable LMP style entries.
Our suggestion is to go for it, you can find inspiration here: LMP track entries remember this is not a copy your are to be inspired by the philosphy of minimum drag and frontal area, that means blunt fronts, long tails and deep cuts, your also encouraged to sit your bodies directly on top of the existing boxes, good luck to all

@Sal Salvador: "Models can be done in any CAD software as long as a Parasolid XT or IGES with original software files are provided"
Leonardo Lopez-Mobilia almost 13 years ago
Actually I asked about it and you can supply some other files instead of the Parasolid XT or IGES because if not, it would force people to model mostly with NURBS in most 3d packages that are not CAD ones because to convert a poly mesh into NURBS is incredibly annoying and it ruins the geometry.

Hope to get the answers at earliest .... Thanks in advance

peterr yes there will be a street legal LMP body made
ashish, no interior designr required
your track and LMP designs must be completely different
voting takes place after the contest so you are at no disadvantage
look forward to your entries
arturo your design must fit the supplied file or it will not be eligable
Supercar System almost 13 years ago
Gentlemen, remember that minor mods and different paint are not enough to turn your street entry into an LMP track entry, the bodies must be completely different to be eligible
Bogdan Tovstonog almost 13 years ago
I think it's not right way to choose winner by users votes. Here are many good designs without much of votes. At the same time, many unreal designs have 40-50 votes (how it could be?). It would be better to choose a winner by specialists, not by voting. IMHO
jura stok almost 13 years ago
I agree with Bogdan's opinion. "Likes" are for Facebook not for this kind of challenge.
One of the participant with a design that does not fit into required framefork deleted all my comments and a rendering that show his flawed execution.
In private conversation he told me he is willing to do everythink to win.
Benjamin Garson almost 13 years ago
I'm not surprised to read your comments Bogdan and Jura.
Number of 'Like' is a kind of judgement, but if it's done in the right way it's a good way to see if an entry is good or not. But some people can make 'anything' possible to have the bigger number of votes, personally I won't be proud to win this way, but for someones that's not a problem.
BUT, it's written on the rules of this contest, so you have to deal with :)
Nevertheless it's always a good exercise to make a challenge to push yourself to go on a better level :)
Tobias Mattsson almost 13 years ago
Jura i have also had some of my feedback removed by the person who i gave the feedback too. This is kinda enoying seing that i only wanted to help the persons to improve on their concepts. But some think that their model is the ultimate one and that no improvements can be done. This is only wishful thinking though. Everything can be improved.

Hardi Meybaum almost 13 years ago
Tobias Mattsson I agree, this is waht GrabCAD is all about - improving through feedback.
Sylvain Gerber almost 13 years ago
Hello everyone!
To respond on the latest remarks about the votes, I join Benjamin ... the rules are clear from the beginning ... The winner will be chosen by the number of likes.
From the moment you decide to participate in the competition we also accepts the rules.
Now it is true that some people will do anything to increase their number of likes …for example by sendig private message written inside "please hit like ... like my model ..."
It is this type of behavior I do not like and that I find unacceptable.
From my point of view, the participants did not send private messages to solicit people to press "like". This is purely of unsporting.
You do not win a contest by begging for votes.
People should vote if they like the model or concept but certainly not out of solidarity or solicitation of some participants.
Regarding the comments ... we can see things in two ways.
- The first, people who delete comments because they think it will disadvantage them for the number of likes ... or because they avoid leaving opinions they consider negative.
In this case it relates to what I said above ... it's not correct to do that just to influence voting.
- The second is that some comments are more like fake observations ... rather than constructive comments (good or bad).
In this case I understand that we can delete them.
Everyone has the right to comment ... and this is even what is great about the challenges.
Receive a good or a bad comment is always very exciting ... and for me a way to correct things and sit back on my work.
This is clearly a great help to advance. The grabcaders are often inspired when they comment (good or bad) on a project and always in the spirit of the advance.
I just say watch out for unfounded comments ... For me to do a good comment, you must also take a step back on your own work.
It's always easier to comment when you do not play the game yourself.
I hope I have not been too long ... but I wished to give my opinion.
Hendy almost 13 years ago
This competition has already occurred. I suggest for grabcad, please no more proffesional competition with winning design will be chosen by GrabCAD community by likes on the model
Ile almost 13 years ago
why on the chassis the center of the front wheel is on not the same place and the center of the rear wheel is not the same height like the front ones?
Christian Blencke almost 13 years ago
Would just like to say I agree with previous comments about vote rotting, it helps no one especially yourself. If you can't learn from others crits and examples, then you are only fooling yourself. If you feel you have to manipulate, fake and sabotage to win, then at least do it for a real profit. The prize is not that substantial. Don't get me wrong I have loved this comp, I have no delusions of grandeur that I will win, but I have learnt a hell of a lot from this and enjoyed pushing the envelope that little bit further, even though I am not happy with my end result. Anywho ihope the best person wins and there have been some prime examples

I wonder, are we allowed to move the side impact beam (the triangular thing in the door) and the bars right before and after it? I need them to be a bit lower, like an inch or two.
jura stok almost 13 years ago
@Tobias,
I don't think that the problem is a lack of self criticism, it's suits more machiavellian principle, where the goal justifies the means.
Supercar System almost 13 years ago
if a car does not use the chassis it cannot be eligible regardless of votes, gauging appeal by likes is a great democratization and will generally reveal a popular solution which is the point of the challenge
good luck to everyone the uploads in general are of a pretty impressive standard
Benji Cepeda almost 13 years ago
it means:
i have more friends = more likes = i am more talented and I'll win
i create 500 grabcad accounts = 500 more likes = i'll win
if i create 1000 accounts you'll pay me 1 dollar for each
I hope you can reconsider the way you'll choose your winner because I've been looking on the models with more likes and, to be honest, they are not the best, not even in design nor modeling quality, but there are other really good on quality and design with a few likes
I am not even participating so it's not for my own benefit but I strongly disagree on this way of selecting a winner, come on, you can get your own team or get a few good designers and vote yourselves for the best models in design or surfaces quality
jura stok almost 13 years ago
In future I would suggest that the "editorial board" picks best 10 applications. Then Grabcad community chooses the best within those 10.
S 117 almost 13 years ago
Completely agree. Let's "editorial board" pick best 10 in the first round. And then let Grabcad community to choose.
In other case it would be disrespectfully regards all participants.
Reggie Fourmyle almost 13 years ago
I concur. I'm new to this board and my design has been up for a few days and I was wondering why no one has even seen it lol. I think it's pretty good but so far I only have 1 like!
The organizers of the contest should choose the top 10 and then the users can vote... but even then I would say the users shouldn't be choosing the top 3 winners simply because it'll just be a popularity contest once again.
Veleckovik Design almost 13 years ago
+1 This is a great idea! How about this:
step1 - all the "likes" get deleted
step2 - "editorial board picks 10 models
step3 - we vote
jura stok almost 13 years ago
@Tomislav,
rules were set in advance, so "step 2" is not realistic.
But your step 1 could be implemented if organisers are not against it. It doesn't break established rules and gives fairer opportunity to all participants.
Veleckovik Design almost 13 years ago
OK, makes sense. Yes, starting from nothing would be fair to everyone since some models have many likes already while new ones are just sitting there barely being noticed.
jura stok almost 13 years ago
....the commision could also eliminate participants from voting that did not follow the requirements or rules.
Marc Senger almost 13 years ago
I'm participating purely for fun and understand the risks, but my sentiment aligns with many here. The voting system does not serve the practical interests of the manufacturer if a popular vote results in a design which is unattractive, unfeasible, or both. If 500 Group wants a successful product, it may only serve their interest to choose a design which best fits their customers and business plan. While it may be enlightening for a company field design possibilities on a large scale with low investment, the final result may do a disservice to the intent of producing a competitive product and hurt their profits if not received favorably. I agree that a jury of experienced partners, engineers, designers, etc. should decide the fate of what could make or break the program. Just my two cents to add to the bin. Thanks for your ears.
Eduard Gray almost 13 years ago
Interesting discussion here.
I believe I am one of the contestants in discussion here as I have deleted the comments of a fellow competitor who was seeking to highlight aspects of my design that he saw as an infringement of competition rules.
The rules encourage a degree of modification to the chassis and state that various aspects "may be modified although their general principle should be maintained."
I have suggested with my design that a lower roll cage could be implemented to give the car a better profile in order to be as competitive as possible on the commercial market when the time comes to find customers.
I am more than happy to discuss this with the manufacturers and engineers for the project to have a two way dialogue about the pros and cons of such a design, though I don't think that a fellow competitor would be as open minded about the project, being in it's very nature a competition.
If the design needs to be altered to comply with the rules, then I will happily do so, in the meantime, please see this design as what it is meant to be, a packaging suggestion for the 500 Group for their chassis that seems to be in the early stages of development and obviously open for input.
Also as a newcomer here I don't think that I can garner the amount of likes as other veterans here so there is little danger of having to make these concessions.
Great initiative for the competition though and I've enjoyed the colorful journey this is turning out to be.
Supercar System almost 13 years ago
Eduard, please read the rules more carefully the roll cage may not be modified, the items the are modifiable are clearly stated
There is little point modifying a frame to achieve a look if it is then unsafe impractical etc etc then it simply a distorted artists rendering. The purpose of the challenge is to achieve a beautiful solution on a chassis that works, therein lies the talent
Eduard Gray almost 13 years ago
Fair enough. My misunderstanding.
Eduard Gray almost 13 years ago
I've now updated my models to reflect these changes.
jura stok almost 13 years ago
Eduard, you are funny. All you did is that you rescaled your model in one dimension (spoiler included).
Though I like it, I am not shure that it fits the concept.
Eduard Gray almost 13 years ago
You are indeed my closest follower Jura and I appreciate the awareness that you are building for my design. I am out of the country at theoment visiting my parents and could not access my original files, so had to make the best of the situation by downloading the original files and stretching them to fit as you say. Unfortunately I return after the challenge deadline so this is the best I could do in the given circumstances. Please keep up the good work and thanks for your understanding.

Leonardo Lopez-Mobilia almost 13 years ago
Well I have to say that I am in unisom with all the comments here regarding the voting. I am a newcomer in GrabCad (and thank you very much for inviting me) but not a newbie on the car design area at all. And I can see that even though the idea of a popular vote sounds good, it would work in the real world where a massive amount of people could see an like the designs, but in this case, the number of people that knows about this is small and mostly limited to "friends" of the contestants, specially when you are new in GrabCad and dont already have some followers. Not to undermine some of the cars with the most likes because there are some good ones, but there are also many good ones that have just a few votes while some other mediocre ones have a pretty decent amount of votes.
Anyway, I will abide to whatever the organizers decide since I knew the rules from the beginning but just giving my 2 cents like some other people :)

Hi
Please confirm that deadine is on 9th April 23:59 Last Time Zone.
So it will be GMT+several hours. Correct? I just on the tight schedule.
Thanks
Darren McKeage almost 13 years ago
I agree with you Leonardo that perhaps there's a way to get more people viewing the competition outside of each competitors network. Since a whole vehicle design competition (especially a supercar/racecar) is more 'high profile' I think it should be able to draw a lot of people in if the word gets out. Perhaps websites like carbodydesign.com, cardesignnews.com, designtechniques.com, worldcarfans.com, etc... could be contacted. I believe they'd love this sort of thing and would put some coverage on their sites. Regardless, a great competition and good luck to all the contestants.
Kaspar Kiis almost 13 years ago
GrabCAD will not start changing the rules in the middle of competition. It would be completely unprofessional and not fair for the participants. The rules were clear in the very beginning of the challenge. There is still two weeks after the end of competition to receive "likes" and GrabCAD together with 500 Group will make sure to promote the "liking" any way they can via Facebook, Twitter and major car design sites. You all have been part of the history already as this is one of the most amazing open source competitions ever with very good quality designs.
Marc Senger almost 13 years ago
Kaspar, we're not petitioning to change the rules before the end of this competition, but rather to urge organizers to consider these viewpoints for future competitions. And I agree, there are some fantastic pieces here regardless.

Hey, l have a doubt, the likes to win are considered since the model is uploaded or they start to count once deadline for submit, begin to vote 10th April???? If its the fisrt case, l think is not fear for those who uploaded at last minute their entry and they should be considered once is the 10th april 0.00hrs. Please someone answer me. Thanks a good luck everyone!
Arturo Torres Segura almost 13 years ago
The staff should erase all the actual likes and let the count starts at 10th April, that way, everyone have they entries online at same time and the competitions would be better, also you should check the model and eliminate those that dont match with the rules. Please take in considerations this suggestions to improve your contest and the final results. Thank you

Hi, I had a problem with uploading my CAD model to the site more than an hour before deadline, but an alternate posting worked and now my work resides there. Is there a way to blend (new) 500f (Street) into the (original) 500F (Street Version)? I did add renders to the former after the deadline, and had to add the CAD model to a REVISION as it was the only way it would upload and it is here: http://grabcad.com/library/500f/download?cadid=7487b608f0b8f2aa7d9a60916d614934

My submission (Street design - Daniel Eek) still isn't listed in the entries.
I did also have problems uploading the 3D files, but after some work I got them appearing in the bottom of the page only. Is this for any particular reason?
Just for safety I added separate download links in the description. Is that OK?

Amadou Nd almost 13 years ago
Hi everyone !
It's been two days now since the end of the contest, and I think there's serious problems of equities that grabcad must resolve before going further into choosing the winner.
The first. There's a significant number of projects that have not followed the rules: propose design that fits with the chassis, so to ensure more visibility to other projects I think the team should check each files and eliminate those who violates this rule.
Second thing, there's some competitors who had their project online just today. So in terms of visibility, they start with more than three weeks of delays on others who have the time to benefit from visibility and likes from the community. I think at this level that grabcad should create a new page with pictures of projects with the likes counter reset to zero.
I think it's the reputation of this site to establish a more equitable system of voting.
Thank you.
Jon almost 13 years ago
Looks like a can of worms Grabcad has to sort out.
Kevin Lo almost 13 years ago
I am thrilled that Kaspar Kiis, GrabCad staff member, stated, "GrabCAD will not start changing the rules in the middle of competition. It would be completely unprofessional and not fair for the participants. The rules were clear in the very beginning of the challenge." It is great to see a site that sticks to its rules and requirements, rather than use them as guidelines.
By that measure, all entries that failed to provide, by the competition deadline, "a Parasolid XT or IGES" file will be disqualified. Similarly, entries that fail to submit renders "in both black and silver bodies" will also be disqualified. Further, it seems to read that those who did not provide "ground clearance is necessary at 4 ¾” / 120mm" will also be disqualified. Those rules will eliminate a lot of entries, including many that have very high "like" counts, started early. After all, shouldn't those who started their entry a long time ago, yet failed to read and follow the rules be disqualified? They had more time to get it right.
Good luck everyone!
jura stok almost 13 years ago
There is one false claim in the Requrements section. It is stated that the car is a targa convertible.
It can not be targa convertible, because of the central structural element which connects rear rollbar and windscreen frame. It can be only a T top convertible,
Benjamin Garson almost 13 years ago
I bounce once again on what we can see with the challenge management problem.
As Hardi told in past posts and its overall presentations, one of the most important key in the success of GrabCAD community is to RESPECT his engineers.
Today, I think, like in the past Challenge SSC Tuatara, there is a serious work to do on how to manage Challenge, because in normal life, everybody should have the same chance to win if he respects the rules. The fact that everybody can post a model before the deadline and is visible to everyone to comment and like, is an unfair way to win a challenge. Normally, all the entries should be visible once the deadline is over, then it would be equal to all (that's what is done on traditional challenges), they have the same time to be judged, liked and commented. Maybe entries have to be privates until the end of a challenge and/or the like / comment features must be disable until the deadline.
The GrabCAD crew must understand that work on a whole car body is not a 2 hours work (I personally worked about more than a 100 hours on this project, and that's on my spare time) so it is very frustrating to have the feeling that the dices are cheated.
Thanks for considering, and I hope we could have a serious answer about this.
I don't care about winning, but I just want to have the feeling that everything is fair. If you say you strictly follow the requirement on the challenge then do it (like Kevin Lo), if you give the requirement just as guidelines, it has to be mentioned too.
@Kaspar : thanks for your answer, I hope you could fix that little problem :)

Jura Stok almost 13 years ago
Well, I think most of us see the same problem.
This kind of challenges are fun, but at the same time all of us spent some serious time to produce the end results. It is not fair to be judged on the basis of time span and number of "friends".
Regarding the Rules I would say that in the future they should be set more coherently. They should clearly state design intent and exact technical specifications.
These are all well intended suggestions for future Grabcad challenges.
Sylvain Gerber almost 13 years ago
It's true that winning a challenge to the number of "like" is a nice idea but unfortunately we can see the limits and excesses.
I think for the next competition it will be better to return to a more equitable system.
A jury composed of members of GrabCad and contest organizers seems to be a good system.
GrabCad still offers very exciting competition and it's a shame to spoil a bit this motivation with rules that give the impression that everyone does not have the same chance of winning.
I'm sure you will study the problem and that everything will be sorted for the next challenges.
Christian Blencke almost 13 years ago
I feel that there should have been a lock feature for this. Its a bitter kill to swallow to see renders still being uploaded way past the deadline. Personally I did not finish in time, but uploaded what I could in the time frame, and yes not the right color scheme or file requirements, am using cinema 4d so can't export tight file, but I accept that it will disqualify me. In truth we all should have the time mgmt done correctly, so saying you can't upload at the last minute is unacceptable as an excuse. Personally my biggest gripe has been the plagiarism going on. I can't claim to own the color scheme of orange and matt grey, but a little annoying, though flattering, to find a lot of people parroting it when I was the first to do it. Sorry if I have ruffled some feathers.

Thank you all for sharing ideas how to improve challenges in GrabCAD. Each comment is extremely valuable for us and will definitely be considered in the future. Still I would like to clarify some aspects that are followed while picking the winners. 1. We don't see anything wrong people asking other people to "like" their models. Nobody is forced to do so if they don't like it. Moreover GrabCAD is the best place to easily ask feedback from people with different backgrounds and this is definitively something we would encourage you to do. 2. One thing we don't tolerate is people making fake accounts to give likes to their own models. We have all the necessary information in our database to check that and will NOT count likes from fake accounts. 3. Most importantly the model has to apply to the requirements stated from the very beginning. Models having most likes doesn't yet mean they have won the competition. There is lot of work for the jury to do. The winners will be announced during one month after the end of competition but still asap. So your patience is very much appreciated.
John Huizingh almost 13 years ago
There might be nothing wrong with the searching for extra likes, but I do not think this is the right system for judging designs. What does the number of likes, or the ability of a designer to gain a lot of likes tell us about the quality of a design? Nothing!
Jon almost 13 years ago
Win or Lose we should thank GrabCAD for putting up the challenge. Thanks GrabCAD...it was a fun challenge! I entered this design challenge not for the prize but the challenge to make a beautiful car from the contraint hard points.
