And the winners are...

Thanks to everyone who participated! There were so many unique solutions for this amazing challenge. To pick the winners, the judges took an in-depth look at how each finalist stacked up in terms of matching the Carus brand, uniqueness, simplicity, marketability, and manufacturability, and rated them from 1 to 10 in each category (10 being criteria fulfilled, 1 being unfulfilled). Congratulations to the winners!

GrabCAD

Conducting an open design challenge was truly a new experience for us. We want to thank everyone that took part in it. We were absolutely astounded by the large participation. Judging was truly harder than we thought. The rendering skills alone are remarkable. Posting such a design task to an open forum was kind of an experiment to us. One which we do not regret whats so ever.

We know there has also been much discussion and some disagreement about the selected finalists. Mainly because of the lack of additional features given credit. We want to give some words of consideration to his fact. While we asked you in the design considerations to think about additional features, the defined goal is still to make a marketable product. A feature alone doesn’t make that. It is the whole package that counts. From the perspective of a producing company, many aspects have to be considered. A large number of the entries resembled or even included existing carus door communication products for instance. It is our goal though, to make a product that has nothing to do with door communication this time. Another popular theme where alarm clocks. And while this seems plausible at first for a bedside device, we must accept the fact that people will most likely be using their mobile phone itself as an alarm. Some of you might know the episode of The Simpsons in which homer is allowed to design a car for his brothers company. While being a humorous satire, it’s a good example that features alone don´t make for a hot selling product.

We also want to say a few words about manufacturability. We do have 5-axis CNC machines at our disposal. And most of the designs could be manufactured one way or the other. But is also always a question of cost effectiveness. A dock that has to be machined for 1 1/2 hours will just not sell. It will end up being too expensive.

Most successful product designs have a certain geometrical simplicity to them. Looking at apple devices and their worldwide success themselves stands proof for that. A fact that we at Carus must face as well.

But do not be discouraged. Becoming a successful designer is a long and hard process. In every new in house product development our own designers produce more drafts for the bin then can be counted for. We see the huge amount of talent out there. And we are sure that this will not be the last challenge we put out there.

CARUS DOPPIO by edward.battistini-1

CARUS DOPPIO

Doppio was chosen for its close resemblance with the Carus design. Its kept simple and looks nice even without devices. The small pocket in front of the phone would be very hard to surface finish. But maybe a nice leather lining would do the trick. There is
a few minor flaws like back support for the phone that would need to be worked
out, but it would be a good starting point for a nice docking station.

Carus Duplo 6 by flaviano.crespi

Carus Duplo 6

Duplo 6 immediately comes across as elegant and
precious. The geometrical simplicity and the clean surfaces are really
stunning. The different materials used for the central block allow for
individual preferences. As for the rotatable sidearms, we can already imagine
the slight dampening drag when turning. They can easily be made as an extrusion
profile. The only possible point of criticism might be the lack of back support
for the phone. Otherwise a most felicitous design.

Carus docking station and audio speaker

Benjamin's design is really something. At first we thought its a wall dock actually. Great simplicity in form and well proportioned. We can imagine this well in many places. Would fit nice into an upscale hotel room as well. Great work!

Carus Duo

At first glance it appeals somewhat odd because the texture comes across as plastic. But when not be fooled of the rendered material it is a really well thought trough design. We like the back support for the phone resembling the circular watch holder. The base plate matches the clean Carus design. A combination of black and silver would go miles on this design. There is some discussion on the triangular shaped holders. Would need some alteration probably. Overall a great design draft to work with.

Carus Design Concept by david.pedersen-1

Carus Design Concept

David's Design Concept is the definition of reduced design language. Very representative appearance. We really like the excessive surface size. The submersible lightning connector does not only give the whole design a clean touch when unused, but it also allows for easy adaption to phone covers. The downturn is that it can only be used with open strap watches.

Carus 06 by anouar.barodi-1

Carus 06

We really like this concept from Anouar. Its design allows for interesting surface and material combinations. It almost has the appearance of a precious jewelry casket. Also the manufacturability is well thought through. It comes across quite classic although very compact. We would probably go over the dimensions a little, and the question of different phones needs some attention but it´d definitely be a good place to start with.

carus dock "OBSIDIAN"

Obsidion, what a great name to start with. Very eccentric design. Reminds one of those model aircraft holders on an Airforce generals desk. Surely not for everyone. But the elegance of the elevated watch holder is truly captivating. Nice work.

Dock 01 by sean.bryson-1

Dock 01

The Dock 01 appeals through its simplicity and its close proximity to the native Carus design. We like that it can be made as one piece as well as separate chargers. The phone part can easily support different types of phones. We´d have to think about the rather large hinges, but still a very nice design.

We really like Phillipe's design idea here. The surrounding frame with the integrated lamp lets the dock in station appear great even without the devices.

CARUS WALL DOCK by tamas.jager-1

CARUS WALL DOCK

The concept of mounting the docking station to the wall has certain elegance to it. The idea behind the wall dock is just so different that it deserves to be a finalist. The Carus design is well visible. The resemblance of the three drawers despite different size and use is greatly implemented. The little storage drawer to hold earphones or maybe watch straps gives it a nice extra touch. Too bad that it requires such a big hole in the wall.
