The Golden Gear Awards (2012)

Medium

Design the first ever Golden Gear Award trophy for GrabCAD's annual community appreciation event!

Here at GrabCAD we value every engineer that puts in the time and effort to contribute to our community. We would like to start an annual tradition where we celebrate the best of the best in the GrabCAD community. Our engineers and designers produce and share astonishing work every day. Having the best content is what drives our product and is what makes us tick.

This year's Golden Gear Awards will go to staff picks and community picks in all kinds of categories: models, renderings, tutorials, and more!

We need a trophy to give our Golden Gear winners. Who better to design a bit of physical product awesomeness than you? Create something that you would want to take home because, after all, the winner of this Challenge will get a Golden Gear, too! Golden Gear Awards winners will be announced here on January 4 along with the Trophy Challenge winner.

Whats a reasonable price? And what in material do you want to print it? (a lot of design guidelines depend on that)

@Martin You can use whatever material you want as long as it's under $75. The more affordable the more we can give out! Is that price too limiting?

Taking the $75 into account Sara it will have to be a very simple design due to mass of model.

Hi Sara I know GrabCAD has to pay for them so it all comes down to how many awards are going out to people and if it is going to be each year or just a one off? Again there has been no sizes giving for this challenge and that would really help peps design there models if they knew what size to make it. People are just making models any size they want but you have to think about when you guys pick the winner and if you were going to scale it down then the tolerances might not be correct for rapid prototyping the winning model.....

another cheap option can be award certificates :)) for badges or for goldern gear,,

just email them to deserving people in ultra high resolutio and with a serial numbern, and they can get them printed themselves!! or keep them in electronic form as they wish!!

the intention is good. everyone's efforts are noble. USD75....it has to be somewhat lightweight & never too heavy.

  • Aref A

Aref A over 4 years ago

    taking into account courier/delivery service....minimizing those costs as well,....i'm guessing the trophy/award maximum allowable volume should be around 9" x 7" x 2" ( 9 inches x 7 inches x 2 inches ) if its made of stainless steel ( any simple, cheap finishing ) . Tolerances : 1-2 inches.

    I'd take a shot in dark prediction , It will cost GrabCAD USD95-110/ unit to manufacture ( inclusive worldwide courier/delivery ) if it's made of stainless steel 9" x 7" x 2" ( 9 inches x 7 inches x 2 inches ) if its made of stainless steel ( any simple, cheap finishing ) . Tolerances : 1~2 inches.

can we scale down the model to save the cost.... or the jury will scale down the model. what will be the criteria of selection of winner either best model or cost as well

Thanks @ArefA! @Aqil if you could scale it down it would be appreciated as problems with tolerances could occur otherwise.

@Aref I do not know were you are getting your sizes or the price from for such a rapid prototype? If you have a little look here this will give you a better understanding of the sizes that will be within the $75 range @ GrabCad Award I am sure this will help you..... Good luck with comp :)

Making the award in anything but strong & flexible will result in either a very small award within the price range of $75 or a award with a price far over $75.

I believe that is important is to find the most beautiful model and geometric parameter can be set at the scale after the selection of winners. So I hope that i win a 3D printer.............good luck for every one.
