Show off your skills and solve real design problems
It's that time of year GrabCADrs! Design the fourth annual Golden Gear trophy for our year end celebration of all things awesome in the GrabCAD Community.
This is also a chance to celebrate a year of your hard work by designing something just for fun. So, go have fun and create a trophy design!
For inspiration, think about what the GrabCAD Community, engineering, and design mean to you, and keep in mind the values we embody as a community. With every action we take, we aspire to be:
Collaborative.
Creative.
Generous.
Professional.
Curious.
Download a PDF of the GrabCAD logo and an STL of Grabby via the 'Download specifications' button on this page. We will be using Stratasys Direct to print the winning trophy.
1. Nominate your favorite engineers, tutorials, and models from 2015 in the comments of this Challenge.
2. Design a 3D-printable trophy for our 2015 Golden Gear Award winners.
3. Get an estimate from Sculpteo or Stratasys Direct and include the size, material and cost in your model description.
4. The 2015 Golden Gear winners are announced after the New Year and they receive the winning trophy design from this Challenge. The Challenge winner gets a trophy, too! This year's Golden Gear Awards will go to staff favorites and community picks in all kinds of categories: models, renderings, tutorials, and more!

Great challenge !!!
I am working on it!
Alp Germaner over 8 years ago
Me too. But on this page the visual with grabby, it says ''Golder''... Should be ''Golden''.
Ben Ewing over 8 years ago
Woops. All fixed. Thanks, Alp Germaner!
Robert King over 8 years ago
The PDF inside the zip file is damaged/broken. It doesn't open.
Ben Ewing over 8 years ago
Should be working now. Thanks, Robert King!
Roger Couture over 8 years ago
What is the approximate size of a 3d printing + $ -100? Thanks.
Robert King over 8 years ago
Can we have various vector formats of the grabcad logo?
Ben Ewing over 8 years ago
https://grabcad.com/roger.marie.couture-1, it varies based on the amount of material but I would say having it fit in about a 12 cm by 12 cm by 12 cm is a good starting point. The price estimators linked the procedure section above should help as well.
Ben Ewing over 8 years ago
Robert King, what format would be helpful for you?
A B. Ingram over 8 years ago
Does the trophy need to be designed to print fully assembled? If not, can fasteners be included (with Mcmaster Carr part #) in the design?
Ben Ewing over 8 years ago
Hey A B. Ingram, we'd like the trophy to not need any additional fasteners and ideally, to print fully assembled. Thanks!
Robert King over 8 years ago
Ben, preferably a .DXF with only arcs and lines.
Ben Ewing about 8 years ago
Robert King, unfortunately, we don't have a dxf. The pdf is in the downloadable spec is the best option with that.
Paul Andrew Santos about 8 years ago
is that a minion? :)
Roger Couture about 8 years ago
For a trophy with elements in motion ... Is that the final proposal should contain only printed 3d elements or the designer may provide (at its expense possibly) the addition of certain parts like axles or metal still self-adhesive film in color?
Ben Ewing about 8 years ago
Paul Andrew Santos, that's Grabby, GrabCAD's mascot. He may be minion shaped but he's our very own creation!
Ben Ewing about 8 years ago
https://grabcad.com/roger.marie.couture-1, the trophy design should be entirely 3D printable. Movement with axles etc. would definitely be cool, but would complicate things a bit from our end.
Ben Ewing about 8 years ago
cbb4b851, sorry to hear that you're having this issue. You should be able to submit an entry by clicking the blue 'Submit an entry' button on the right side of the page. If this doesn't work for you, please email a screenshot of what is happening to ben@grabcad.com and i'll look into it further.
Ben Ewing about 8 years ago
We are excited and impressed by the awesome trophy designs so far! Just a reminder that the design needs to be 3D printable (so that we can easily have these made and sent out!) and ideally priced under $100 to make. I strongly recommend using a tool like http://www.sculpteo.com/en/pricing/price-and-delivery/#3d-printing-price-and-payment-methods to get a quick cost estimate and ensure that your design is 3D printable.
Ben Ewing about 8 years ago
Also a reminder, if you see a model in the Community (that was uploaded in 2015) that you feel deserves to win a Golden Gear for one of the categories listed above (ie. Top Collaborative model, Top Transportation model, etc.), let us know, here!

I'm super excited to announce the finalists for the Golden Gear Trophy Challenge: https://grabcad.com/challenges/the-golden-gear-trophy-and-awards-2015/results. You all really impressed us with your creativity, hard work and GrabCAD spirit! Take a look and be sure to let us know which one is your favorite, here and by giving the model a like! We want a trophy that not only represents GrabCAD member achievements but also is something that you will proudly display. Next we'll be taking a look at how all of the finalists stack up in terms of creating a 3D printable trophy that captures the GrabCAD spirit.
Ben Ewing about 8 years ago
Also, if you haven't already, take a minute to nominate a model for one of the categories listed above. The models selected for each of those categories will receive a 3D print of the winning trophy!
REDA DJABRI about 8 years ago
Hi Ben,
My price is between 100 and $ 200 as expected in the criteria So do not look for excuses saying it's expensive ..... I see ..... and the whole community of CAD Grab witnesses
Please Remove your expression " excpensive" i don't like that
Regards
REDA
Ben Ewing about 8 years ago
Hi Reda, as always I appreciate your passion! Saying that your design was on the expensive side does not diminish your design at all. It is very clever and creative. I did say that around $100 was ideal. That being said, we will be judging the finalists on creativity, 3D printability and GrabCAD spirit, first and foremost.

We are super excited to announce the winner of the Golden Gear Award Trophy Challenge as well as the winners (and honorable mentions) of the Golden Gear Awards themselves: https://grabcad.com/challenges/the-golden-gear-trophy-and-awards-2015/results. The GrabCAD Team is proud of everything that every one of our members accomplish. You all showed us immense creativity and GrabCAD spirit in both your trophy designs and your 2015 contributions. Ultimately to pick the trophy winner, we looked at how all of the finalists represented the GrabCAD Community and created a 3D printable, eye catching trophy. While only 1 trophy is going to be sent to the Golden Gear Winners, each and every one of the finalist designs would make a fantastic trophy that other member's would be proud to display.
Ben Ewing about 8 years ago
The winners of the Golden Gear Awards themselves can be found in the challenge description above. Please shout out other amazing designs or tutorials that you saw over the past year. There are just too many amazing engineers and designers in the GrabCAD Community to recognize every year so take a minute and acknowledge another member's work that you appreciate!

Hi Esmir Durakovic, we decided to do it a little differently this year with the winning trophy and 4 runner ups. We decided given that this challenge is about coming together as a community, that we didn't want to rank everyone. I think everyone did an awesome job, here. We picked the finalists because we loved all of the creative designs, and honestly would struggle to rank them all against each other.
Roger Couture about 8 years ago
Bravo to all winners, I think the contest should not be missed to improve every year, on the basis of a wider diffusion of the results on the net. In other words, awareness Golden Gear to the public.
