Show off your skills and solve real design problems
Design a vehicle for your favorite superhero.
For most people, superheroes are an irreplaceable part of their childhood. It's full of reading a lot of comics, watching cartoons on TV, or going to the movies to watch them on the big screen. You remember their powers and recite them to your friends without any effort.
They all need to get to the scene to do rescues, but not all heroes can fly. Have you ever imagined a design for your favorite superheroes ride to the action? Now is the time to recapture your dream superhero vehicle and model it in 3D.
ZWSOFT joins GrabCAD once again for a design challenge, which provides GrabCADrs a chance to show their imagination, creativity, and design skills. Designs are not limited to cars, create any form of transportation to help your favorite superheroes get there faster.
ZWSOFT will provide a trial license for every participant, you can download it here. Please do not include any images of your superhero - mention your superhero inspiration in the description, along with the motivation for your choice of vehicle. To activate a 60-day trial license use the code: PLG5-9TXE-XFKR-HAAR-Z322-ZDFF.
For a KeyShot trial without watermarked renderings, email license@luxion.com with "ZW3D Vehicle Challenge" in the subject line. You will receive a 15 day license for use in the contest.
Design your entry with ZW3D. Participants are not allowed to import a 3D model that was created with another software and saved as a Z3 file. Make significant modifications on any imported models, or build a new model with existing parts that were imported into ZW3D. Link to any existing parts used and give credit to the original author.
Participant must submit a .z3 file, rendering, and a STEP or IGES files of the their design.
Participants are encouraged to use the “Hybrid Modeling” function of ZW3D when designing their vehicles!
The competition is open to everyone. You can submit as many designs as you’d like, given that each follows the listed requirements.
Only models uploaded to GrabCAD library through this Challenge page will participate in the competition. Participants must submit z3 files, which is the file format of ZW3D, to this challenge. Tag the entries with “supervehicle”.
Team entries are welcome. In case of team win, prize money will be transferred to team leader who is solely responsible for splitting it among team members. Limit one prize per person/team.
Applicants are not entitled to any compensation or reimbursement for any costs. The applicant’s participation shall not constitute employment, assignment or offer of employment or assignment.
Winning designs will be chosen based on the rules and requirements. The submissions will be judged on design and creativity.
By entering this competition, you:
a. Warrant that the work is your original work.
b. To the best of your knowledge, it is not, and has not been in production or otherwise previously published or exhibited.
c. Neither the work nor its use infringes the intellectual property rights (whether a patent, utility model, functional design right, aesthetic design right, trade mark, copyright or any other intellectual property right) of any other person.
All cash prizes awarded through Paypal. Void where prohibited. The sum of the Awards is the total gross amount of the reward. The awarded participant is solely liable for the payment of all taxes, duties and other similar measures if imposed on the reward pursuant to the legislation of the country of his/her residence, domicile, citizenship, workplace, or any other criterion of similar nature.
All entries must be submitted publicly and awarded entries become the intellectual property (IP) of the Challenge sponsor. The Sponsor has the right to promote the winning entries. All private submissions will be made public at the Challenge deadline.
This Challenge starts on September 16, 2013 and ends on October 27, 2013, at 11:59pm UTC. Winners will be announced latest November 27, 2013.
We will release the finalists before the final announcement to give the Community an opportunity to "vote" for their favorites in the comments. The jury will take these into consideration when picking the final winner. This new addition is based on feedback from you!

Just curious. Is there any restriction/guideline on the type of "super hero" during judging? Western? Orient? Anime? Manga? Comic? Modern? Ancient? Good guys? Baddies? Or really free for all =) Different people define super hero differently. Don't want to be "hit" by another silent death later.

@Wing Zhv I Will Be Glad to USE Keyshot, but we can't use others softwares for the rendering ??, i Perfect Vray Rendering, and i would like to take advantage of That, but all the modeling and the work will be absolutely with ZW3D,
Wing Zhu almost 12 years ago
@Tan Wei Kok No restriction on the hero type. :)
Wing Zhu almost 12 years ago
@ AIT OUFKIR YASSINE No restriction on the render tools. Keyshot may be one of your options to help you get a wonderful render. And keyshot is the render tool which can work better with ZW3D designs. We strongly recommend you may have a try.

@Fahad Rafi Butt Heroes also like and need great tools to be more superior. Eg: Green Goblin has a flying machine. Why not free our imagination to enjoy this challenge. Great days to everyone!

Zw3d actually seems to be quite an interesting modeling suite. It is important to try all the tools out there on the market as regardless of something being "industry standard" or not, there are many interesting features / approaches to modeling which newer 3d programs can provide that some of the larger companies haven't really been able to implement, for whatever reason. It isn't fair to judge something right away and disregard the challenge. The idea is that they want you to see what their program can do that the others can't. So far, I am impressed with the simplicity of the UI. I modelled something within the first 3 minutes of opening the program that I couldn't have done if I were opening inventor for the very first time.

Well this little challenge is right up my street.....Space ships, super heroev, comics book action..... This little challenge sure has caught my eye and since my head is been in the books to long it is time to have some fun again with modeling for a challenge and learning a new software in the process.....
Awesome challenge and for sure we will be seeing some awesome space ships for this one....
Good luck guys :P

Can the student version of the software be used for this challenge?
Victor Bonavarte 6779 almost 12 years ago
I think this is not a challenge but the promotional product,!
why is not allowed to use other software.? This is not fair for some designers.
Michelle Wong almost 12 years ago
@Victor Bonavarte Undoubtedly, this is a contest held by ZW3D. Using ZW3D offers designers like you guys a fresh exprerience of 3D modeling. Plus, it's easy to learn, especially for the experienced designers. Following the steps of "Show-n-Tell", the tuturiol tool in ZW3D, beginners can master this software in several hours.
Michelle Wong almost 12 years ago
@Anirban Ghosh Of course, there is no limit on the editions of ZW3D CAD/CAM software.
Victor Bonavarte 6779 almost 12 years ago
Michelle Wong@ yes I know, I was using it. but it will be more exciting and popping up various models,
when not in use software batasin, creativity can not be forced with ZW3D software.
but it all depends on the designer, because I have to install, and only 1 month only, give license 3 months will be interesting for me,
Michelle Wong almost 12 years ago
@Martin Spencer-Ford Thanks for your support. Presently, we have no plans to develop a Mac version.
Victor Bonavarte 6779 almost 12 years ago

@Neel After you install ZW3D and running it, you can find its Tutorial on the menu, go to HELP -> Training Manual -> choose one of the 3. It is very easy to pick up =)

jamie over 11 years ago
Hi Just a quick question regarding the sketching of this program. I use solidworks mainly - but i am starting to get to grips with zw and finding a decent program. But i would like to know if there is anyway to convert entities of edges or previous sketches in zw as this is such an advantage in solidworks when working with surfaces? also is there anyway to create 3d sketches in zw? - again i feel this is a must for surface modelling. ive tried to search for these answers online but with no joy. Any help would be great. thanks.
Stefan Varga over 11 years ago
jamie you can use the reference function to re-use edges or curves from parts within the assembly, or just use curve from edge within the part. Tools for 3D sketching you can find in the Wireframe tab, you can use this tab to make base curves for the surfaces that you'll create in the Free Form tab.
Sara Sigel over 11 years ago
Great discussion so far! Just over one week left to get your entries submitted. Don't forget to include the Z3 version.
jamie over 11 years ago
@Stefan thanks for your help. Although im now struggling with the heal/sew option. I believe this is the only way to form a solid from surfaces? yet my model will not form into a solid at all. I have tried everything. Still alot of surfaces? All help would be great
Stefan Varga over 11 years ago
@jamie use the open edges function to see where the open ones are, they also show in blue dashed lines on the model. You need to trim and stich them, also check for gaps between surfaces. But overall I wouldn't worry about opened surfaces since ZW3D works with both solids and surfaces simultaneusly with the hybrid modeling technology ;) you can even machine them in CAM
jamie over 11 years ago
@stefan thanks. but the issue i have is that my model is all surfaces so when i creat a solid to add to the model i cant get it to merge and therefore i cant add fillets etc between the solid and the surface?

Hey everyone.
I'd like to share my story with you.
Three weeks ago I saw this contest.
I wanted to participate but did not have the time.
I've never worked with ZW3D or Solidworks before.
Two years ago I worked with Inventor for just three weeks.
Because I love challenges, I decided to give it a try.
Using the few things I knew about Inventor, I started working On Friday night, at 7.
I worked continuously on Saturday and Sunday. I only took a break to sleep and eat.
Five minutes before deadline, I managed to upload my project.
For me it is already a success because I managed to finish a project in just three days, using a soft of which I knew nothing before.
Thank you, ZWSOFT, for making ZW3D an easy to learn software.
Thanks, GrabCAD, for the competition.

I think one gem you might want to take another look at Sara is the F1 Bat Cruzer, with its stylish but stealth like features I think this has a look of realism to it above some other entries which have more of a conceptual look. Just my personal opinion but I think this should be a serious contender to win.
John Moseley over 11 years ago
Hi Sara, the description at the top of the page is confusing as it says "We believe that these five entries are the top designs. Let us know your favorite entry and recommend additions before Nov 27th."
However, there are ten designs shown on the results tab.
3Dconnexion is supporting this challenge and would like to extend the news about the finalists to its community. However, we want to make sure people know what to do when they visit the page (considering not all will already be GrabCAD members).
Can you confirm where you are expecting comments to be left. For example, in this thread, the page for each design or either?
Also, I assume voting is done by clicking the like (heart icon) on the design's page?
Thanks :-)

I didnt enter this contest due to having to learn a new programme and time restrictions. But i was under the impression that the competition was to design a vehicle for a superhero - but i feel there are alot of entries that dont meet this requirement as they are just basicaly spaceships or fantasy ships - so for this reason i have to agree with Ian M and go with the F1 BAT CRUZER by jamie as this in my opinion is what contest was asking for - a relistic super hero vehicle modelled in ZW3D. I like this design because it suits the super hero it was designed for and looks like it could actually be built and put into action.

F1 Bat cruizer by Jamie is a great design. I agree with Jay (above), I think this is one of the only designs that suits the Superhero it was designed for....stealth looking with an element of class (F1)!!! Gets my vote!
