Chris Shakal

Aspiring Aerospace Engineer

My first experience with CAD was in September 2011 as part of a freshman engineering drafting/CAD course. CATIA V5 was the software I used, and after over 4000 hrs of experience, it's still an obsession. I frequently model things in CATIA for fun; I enjoy making models of airplanes and engines, sometimes based on existing designs. (Disclaimer: No proprietary information is ever used.) I am occasionally dabbling in other 3D modeling and analysis (FEA, CFD, etc.) programs as well, and I've recently immersed myself in the fantastic world of 3D printing! I recently graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a minor in CAD/CAM. I plan to get a Master's degree in the next 5 years, and I am currently employed in the aerospace industry.

work experience

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Teacher's Assistant January 2013 - December 2013

Graded homework and helped students learn engineering drafting and CATIA.

Nat'l Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (Japan) Research Intern June 2013 - July 2013

Researched current trends and issues within the aviation biofuels industry. Performed lab tests on biofuels to find cloud point, pour point, etc. Created written report on all findings.

Gulfstream Aerospace CPLM Intern May 2014 - August 2014

Assisted with CAD data version control, CAD geometry validation between file types, CATIA user support, and enhanced understanding of CATIA Knowledgeware.

Gulfstream Aerospace Wing Structural Design Intern May 2015 - August 2015

Modified and optimized a CATIA model of a Gulfstream aileron test fixture. Wrote a VBA macro and GUI to automatically create 80+ assembly constraints. Created near-net shape forging models for various wing structural components. Wrote VBA macros to automate Excel and Word report generation.

Gulfstream Aerospace Structural Design Engineer October 2015 -

Structural design, production support, lofting/surfacing, and R&D engineering.
