What is the use of global variables in solid works?

Is global variable in solidworks used to name the dimensions or have any other purpose?

It is used to add variables that could be used later on throughout the model.
You can use the variables in equations, link them to some dimensions, etc.

They come in handy if you need to make different variations of a part to include thickness length radius and such. yet keeps the part similar throughout the model.
Also if seeking the CSWA you will need to know how to use and apply them accordingly.
