I Have worked at my current place of employment for 6 years. For the first four I was a machinist on the shop floor turning and milling endbells and frames for industrial generators. For the last two years I primarily assist engineers in the design of generators. This involves modeling individual components and assemblies in Creo Parametric, as well as conceptualization of new ideas and processes.

Learned how to use manual mills and lathes as well as CNC mills and lathes. Was introduced to 3D CAD via Solidworks which I purchased a copy of. I use my copy to make things for sale, and for myself. Those skills allowed me to promote myself from a machinist position to my current position as a Mechanical Designer.

Don't do this. My other degree made WAY more money and was far more useful. Though I can spot the propaganda on NPR.
