First you need to learn a software, both 2d and 3d. Knowing multiple software is a real plus get yourself an AAS degree in cad. Then you’re going to need an Engineers degree. So learning takes up about 6 years of your life.
You really need the Engineers degree so you won't hurt anyone with one of your designs breaking.
Now you did say freelance, so having a good web site is going to be crucial in getting your talent out to people and businesses that are looking.
Lastly you really need to love Designing. Hope this helps. It’s what I have done and I am very happy with my life.
