I am trying to recreate the scroll of a viola based on one that was done by --Ricardo Espinosa -- and I got the shape and coil specifications exactly. When I tried to create it you can see the error message I got. What if I need a coil that self intersects to make the model for heavens sake? Any advice on how to make this differently or if there is just some adjustments I can make would be very useful.
Which inventor version are you using for this?
"Self intersection" errors during winding are better managed sicne Inventor2014.
Im using 2014, did they fix this in 2015 then?
I think it's Ok with inventor 2014 for this kind of feature.
May be, if I undestand your first picture the problem is that the profile you want to wound cross the axis at the end of the winding.
That is not permited yet.
A good way to do this could be to wound it in the other way : from the little radius to the larger one. With a section not crossing the winding axis.
If the result you want to get includes this complex part of the geometry, you have to do it in another feature.
I try to be clear, but I'm not native english speaker, may be we can exchange some files if you want
