Does this irritate anyone else besides me?
Does it irritate anyone else besides me that there are only 0-5% of designers uploading content on a regular basis while the rest of the users just come here to get free models? Then they complain that stuff isn't what they expected when they have less than 2 or 3 uploaded models?
How do we fix the site so that everyone has equal collaboration?
Id have to agree with the general sentiment here. Its just apart of being an online community. Most forums/websites follow the 80/20 rule. For every member 80% visit the site and take advantage of its services while 20% actively participate and generate content. A lot of the models being uploaded are by students or just projects engineers did for fun. Most of us cannot upload models from our work so if you spend all you time designing something you can't share it doesn't reflect well on your GrabCAD profile. Now that isn't to say we should shun them because they haven't uploaded many models. The best way to encourage people to upload more is to comment on their designs and provide positive feedback. If they feel like its a community they want to be apart of they will share more.
Hope I'm not one of those who irritates you ;)
You can't do anything about it. It's a matter of how people were raised, basic, elementary home education... Some people simply don't feel that giving is so much more meaningful than taking.
edit: and of course, there are people like Kirk who have their reasons which are ok, but I bet Kirk doesn't download a lot.
that's normal Martin, don't expect everyone to be good with CAD. I suspect that more than 50% of the members are one time visitor who just want to download a model for school or something and Google lead them here so they need to sign up to download whatever they are coming for.
Unfortunately the work that I do in my day job has strict rules that do not permit me to upload any of that work. This leaves me only the models I can produce at home in my spare time to share with others. I find it difficult to find the time right now to create models in my spare time that are worthy of sharing with others. I find that I do however enjoy contributing to the site through adding renderings to models that I find of interest. From what I have seen there are a lot of people that contribute to the site the best way they can. I also agree with Cliff "Anyone complaining about free is a moron".
At first, I also came to download some models. Then, I found that it just might be fun to upload something that I had created and didn't find on GrabCAD... Lately, I'm trying to share some of my knowledge by answering to quaestions and help. There are some new projects I'm working on which will be uploaded, but don't hold your breath :)
Maybe it's irritating but its sadly the way world is spinning now days. I'm sorry that i can't upload most of my work because of confidentiality and contracts where i work. I have put most of my (if not all) spare time models here and i hope i will have some more models in near future to post some more of them. But i would rather that there are less new models every week but of good quality rather then one model every minute that is of no use to us all...
At first i was here to see and learn from experts ( finished model is an jewel) by seeing how they do the models and what technique they use.But then i posted some of my models as i have seen that i have a little bit to offer. I just hope i will have enough time to be more active and have more models here.

I could upload 90% of all the things I do at/for work, that would be completely useless as parts because most of the files are actually only simple sheet metal pieces used in complete products made mainly from round tubing. The rest of the product consists of parts available either in hardware stores (bolts, washers, nuts, rod ends) or bike shops (tires, chains, cranks, brakes, headsets, bearings etc), basically, except for the mainframes, I already uploaded most of my "usable" work to GrabCAD :)
For anyone else, even though "intellectual property" it's basically useless stuff unusable for anything else except for what it was designed for...
Our motto is "Always innovate, never imitate" and innovation spreads all through every design I made, yet, there is nothing revolutionary about it... Except for the laser cutting and welding techniques, we don't use any of the sophisticated technologies available today, everything is hand made, and custom built... Simple and functional... Most of the models I designed primarily follow the function and simplicity and are limited to the level of low-tech production, therefore, the "amazing" part of the story starts in using the completed product, not in the details of what it's built up from... I'm not afraid that someone would replicate my designs, it would require much more than just having all the parts and technical drawings, but also a huge investment into materials and production... We're already on the top level with companies that do great designs in the same field (doesn't sound too modest when I say it now) and I'm not afraid from competition because what I do, requires much more knowledge and experience than just capability to make a copy of an existing construction :)
Enjoy the site for what it is.
If you are concerned about you work upload in step format or as screen shots
I enjoy looking at what others have and can do and am amazed at quality
Sometimes I look to see how others have accomplished their model
Don't give up on the rest of us
Anyone complaining about free is a moron you get what you pay for
Nah, it doesn't, almost everyone here came to download a model.
Yeah I know I've been on this site since the beginning and I only have 15 models uploaded, but I don't do a lot of models and all the good ones are up here. I actually don't download anything from here, models are no use to me at this point in time, all that I downloaded and still have are computer parts for future use. I'm here just to enjoy the look of a good model or read something interesting.
If you don't like sharing then don't, it's the same situation for every free site, there is no fixing it.
We all have our areas of expertise. May it be designing or rendering, we are all equally to blame for not sharing all the time. I admit myself of being a person that downloads other peoples models but yet i don't share enough simply because I model mainly at work and not at home. Our parts we make here at work are more specialized for our products not standard off the shelf stuff. When i get a free moment i try to model anything else i can.
