Editing STEP files (dinosaur puzzles) in Inventor

By Neil Wasik on 22 Oct 21:17 3 answers 0 comments

Recently I downloaded a STEP file of an assembled pterodactyl puzzle from grabCAD. I can open the file with inventor but I am having trouble separating the parts into individual files, and eventually 2d profile .dwg's (or .dxf). I would like to get proficient at this to be able to cut these on my laser. I did attach the file if it helps. Can anyone give me some direction?

I would recommend you use AutoCAD for a 3 axis CNC machine. As long as you are cutting out a 2D piece you can edit the depth in your CNC program options most often.

I will be using AutoCAD for any editing and nesting. My issue is getting the .dxf or .dwg files of each individual part out of the step assembly. Any ideas?

In that case I would use Autodesk Fusion and open the .stp in Autodesk Fusion. After opening the .stp file save it as a .dwg file when you are ready to convert it.
