How to cast shadows on my part
ive designed a sun dial. how can I get light to shadow on the part, not the floor?

With SolidWorks Professional, you can access Solar Access Studies. The tool is started from the Animation Wizard.
You might also try adding sunlight to the model from View - Lighting and Cameras - Add Sunlight.
