How to produce animated avatar pics?

I have seen a few people having animated avatars and the like...
Can anyone explain how this is achieved..

There's probably a way to export your short animation into animated gif. but if you have Adobe photoshop, you can try following steps:

You can use .gif files on your avatar for animated view. There are lots of different ways to get .gif files. You can google "gif archive" "cool .gif s" or somehting like that.

I used VirtualDub to produce my gif animation. There aren't as many setting to play around with but it gets the job done. http://www.virtualdub.org/index.html

You can do the same thing in 'Gimp', it's free and easy.
