I need some help using part instances in assembly Design tables in Solidwork 2014

I need to know how to load different instances of a part into different Solidworks assemblies. However, in some instances of the assemby, the part instance is not required at all.

In Pro/E and Creo, you can do this in a single column of a Family table. However, this doesn't seem to be the case in Solidworks. I cannot find a way to do it. Can anyone help? In CREO, you specify which instance you require of a component and add the letter "N" into fields where the part is not required.

It sounds like you want to use what is called a Design Table.
With a Design Table, you create different Configurations of an assembly (or part), and are able to control different features to essentially make different versions.
Check out the tutorials included in the SolidWorks help menu. It has a good introduction to Design Tables.
