I was given a .STP file of an object designed by someone else , my goal is to open the file in SOLIDWORKS 2016 and change its dimensions to modify it a little.

However , i keep running into the same error "Parts contain overlapping solids, featureworks can not proceed further". (upon importing the .stp file into solidworks)

On my feature manager design tree , it reflects as an ''imported model". when i right click-edit feature it prompts me to look for an IGES file ( .igs, .iges ).

Can anyone advice me on how i can achieve my goal of changing the dimensions of the my 3D model ( which was given to my as a .STP file ) . And why does Solidworks prompt me to look for an IGES file everytime i right click-edit feature on the "imported"' model on the feature manager design tree.
