Knitted surfaces to solid model if typical methods don't work

I need to change my boundary created knit surface F-16 into a Solid Model to create the engine compartment and engine air intake. I created a surface extrude on the top plain through the center of my model and used the body as a trim tool and then tried to trim the extruded entity. (It wont let me complete my trim.) I then need to knit the body and the surface and form the solid object. Any suggestions. I would really appreciated it. If you open the model create a sketch on the top plane and draw a line from the origin and make the other end coincident with the point at the end of the model>exit sketch>extrude line up to vertex(use option) select trim> use body as trim tool> select extrude to trim> knit surfaces as solid and done. This is what I tried and was told to do in my tutorial and it hasn't been working.
