What are cloud points in Catia and how can we use it in surfacing?

In automotive industrie the car designers first draw a lot of sketches, then build scaled clay models (1:4 - 1:1). These clay models are optical sampled, so you get millions of points coordinates (X/Y/Z) this is the "cloud point". With
"digitized shape editor" and
"quick surface reconstruction" you get two (powerfull) CATIA V5 tools to extract surfaces of these points. In my opinion these tools are really special and difficult to use.
