i agree with Newton CAD software are the Softwares which design & provide Drawings and etc CAM Softwares are related to Manufaturing machines like CNC and CAE sofwares are the analytical Softwares which simulate and calculate the engineering problem (usually with meshing) like Ansys.

CAD- Computer Aided Designing is a technology concerned with creation, modification and optimization of a design.
CAM- Computer Aided Machining is a technology which involves computer systems that involve, plan and control manufacturing process
CAE- Computer Aided Engineering helps us to do the analysis of the CAD created product.

normally we use terms cad/cam/cae this is not the actual sequence of this.sequence is cad/cae/cam
first we create the model(virtual prototype) by using CAD software package.
then we make the analysis of that model CAE software package to check its design aspects.
in last step after validating that design in cae it moves to CAM package to generate its tool path required for the manufacturng.

CAD - Computer Aided Design (SolidWorks, ProE, Catia, etc.)
CAM - Computer Aided Manufacturing (SolidCam, MasterCam, HMS Works, etc.)
CAE - Computer Aided Engineering (Symulation, Ansys, Abaqus, etc.)

In automotive industry all of them are very importent.
    HyperMesh - Pre-processor: http://www.afrl.hpc.mil/software/info/hypermesh/

The below example may help in better understand about cad/cam/cae
cad:- it is used to design a model or a assembly of parts
cam:- it is used to manufacture using cad model
cae:-it is used to assemble parts automatically(robots) using cad assemblies
