In basic motion we consider physical contact, center of gravity & gravity force etc.while in animation model is simulated in key frames.
This is the example of basic motion :

Basic motion uses gravity and physical contact, while Animation uses key frames that you can generate.
Essentially, Animation is for presentation purposes and Basic Motion is for analyzing. Both can use Mates and Motors.
Here is an example I made where you can't use Animation because the study depends on physics: http://grabcad.com/questions/how-can-i-do-some-like-that-scott-bruins-wall-smash-animation-link-in-the-description.
