What's the easiest way to create Rendering Materials in Autodesk 3ds Max?

I currently run Solid Edge ST4 with ERA and import my Solid Edge work into Autodesk 3ds Max 2012 for final rendering with foilage, people etc. If I use a file translator between the two programs, the colours come thru from Solid Edge quite well, but it takes a lot of time. Is there a simple way to bring the materials straight from Solid Edge to 3ds Max? Is there anyone out there that uses these two programs that could give me a few tips with file translation?

we use low size textures and lo poly models so the render time will decrease use adobe photoshop to create textures and decrease file size
