which is the basic design to learn for mechanicl engineer student?

As I am new learner I like to start from basic design tool. can anyone suggest me whether #autocad or #solidworks for learning.

Accepted answer

Yes. you can learn AutoCAD before solid works. because it is the basic software to learn any 3d modeling software. it elaborates the basic concepts of 2d modeling. And AutoCAD is also easy to learns

Autocad is the standard for 2D engineering design and drafting. They set the standards that everybody else aspires to. From electrical schematics to architectural floor plans, AutoCad is the one to use. From the very beginning it was intended to be used for 2D design and drafting. While AutoCad has extensive 3D capabilities, both in wireframe and solids, there are much better options for 3D design. Do not attempt to learn 3D design with AutoCad. You would be wasting your energy!

Solidworks on the other hand is a true 3D design tool from the ground up. They are setting the standard in the 3D design arena. Most everything is done in a 3D environment and the 2D drafting output is almost an automatic result. Solidworks is not intended for strictly 2D work like schematics and basic floor plans. Solidworks is a highly capable 3D design tool. And 3D design is the only way to go in today’s world.

Autodesk Inventor is very similar to Solidworks and is a companion product to AutoCad. Autodesk provides software suites that include both Inventor and AutoCad as well as a host of other related softwares. I can highly recommend their products.

To answer your question, for mechanical engineering, you need to learn to use both 2D and 3D design tools. You will not find a single piece of software that will do both very well. I would try to learn both AutoCad and Solidworks. If you must pick just one. I would chose Solidworks.
