I will Go with solid works
i used both software's in detailed and now i prefer solid works..
we can use advance surfacing in solid works more easily for complex projects as compere to solid edge.

I would say Solid Works. Although learning Auto Cad would be a great starter, in regards to learning. It gives you a great basis to start from. You don't need it but most programs dealing with drawings of any nature could sure use this in their repertoire. In my humble opinion.
