Why has Grabcad let this site go to hell just this year!

I used to be crazy about this site. I guess I think this site has gone down hill. People want to upload renderings or images without models. Also people are not very nice. When most people download your files they don't even click the like button. I had a long conveyor I drew just for here and there were well over 200 almost 300 downloads of it but only 10 people clicked the like button. So screw them! I created 5 models for the Grabbybot challenge. It took time to make them. Grabcad couldn't even thank me for entering the contest. I wasted all my time for nothing. Grabcad team couldn't even take 3 seconds to click the like button. So, I really don't like this site anymore! I deleted all but 1 file. Why should I work so hard trying to come up with stuff to put on here and take all the time to upload it if nobody even likes it? I click the like button every time I download a drawing. Anymore it's all about images. Some people don't even upload thier cad models and grabcad reward them. So the hell with this site, I'm not interested in it anymore! I plan to pass this on to everyone that I told that tthis was a good site. People with models that take the time to create other formats of thier models and take the time to upload them and share them just doesn't get any special treatment over those that just upload images without cad models.

Exactly Greg!!! This sit is called Grabcad, not Grab image! Cad stands for Computer Assitsted Drafting! Not imagery! I can get images from the internet. I used to like sharing cad files with people, but you don't need any cad files to share and you can take anything you want from here without even being nice enough to click the like button to show someone that you even like thier work and appreciate all the time it took them to create it and the time to share it. That was wrong of someone to steal your model and create a render of it for thier own profile. people like that should be deleted from this site.

I am still training to be an design engineer that is my passion, but also art is my passion and I do CG Art work. I post only renders of some of my CG Art work models to show the other side of my passions in life. Just like GrabCAD is my passion I come here to share both my CAD models and also my CG Art work renders...... As this is my number one web site on the net and I am sure it will always be my number one web site. Maybe there is others like myself and that is the reason they only post renders.

I understand if you want to show off with something that you are working on, but for professional reasons, you dont want to share the CAD files. That would explain not having the CAD files, just the renders. I have done that in the past. But posting just renders on your profile, does not do anything for you as an engineer or drafstman. I can go to google and post a million renders here...

I think the best response I can give you Greg is "Can't please everyone, all the time". Don't take this as a "We don't care about your thoughts".... but think of our position. We can't force everyone to like every good CAD model out there, or render something nicely, or be professional and not steal or misattribute something. That's impossible. What we can do is try our best to promote the best values and discourage the worst values out there.

As to your criticism towards loading images, there are two points. First is - sometimes people want to upload 2D images, either sketches, 2D CAD files or even pictures of a project, just like Nuno, Aled and William said. Would we want to stop that? No ... because many people wanted that function. Second, think of all of those professional CAD users that can upload renders but not CAD files because of NDAs or Work policies and such? Would you want to stop them from doing that? After all their hard work? I don't think that's in the best interest of anyone.

As for your comment on challenges. We thank everyone who enters - and the best designs always win. I'm sorry yours wasn't chosen - I wish I could remember which models were yours, but you erased them from the library. That's too bad... because i can see that a lot of people liked your models. And I want to see why. Doesn't that make you at least a little happy that people liked your work?

As for some other comments by Abhijeet - theft is a fact of life on GrabCAD. We have a report button - use it when you see something and we will investigate. We take these things seriously. We're hiring more people so this happens less. I regularly get emails from a few serious GrabCADrs about stolen files - we move as quickly as we can.

I guess what I want to say is that GrabCAD isn't perfect, but I'd say we're miles above what other libraries, communities and tutorials do. And that has to do with the community we've got. It's wholly dependant upon how we channel that community, and its an ongoing project. Your comments Greg, and everyone else's, are ones we know about perfectly. And the choices we made or are about to make aim to get the best possible, but not perfect, outcome. I hope that you don't leave GrabCAD in a huff - because we can't improve without your contributions. And the contributions of every member here.

As Community Manager, I'm taking ownership of making GrabCAD the best place for engineers to interact and collaborate. At any time, you can send me a private message to let me know how your experience is going. We will be more open about our community expectations and will support those users who call GrabCAD home.

Sometimes, CAD files can be hiding in the ‘Renderings’ folder on the file download page. It’s worth checking. I think Grabcad staff should look at this issue because clearly, something’s gone wrong somewhere. People can also have great difficulty in uploading files. The system isn’t very intuitive and can catch people out. There are also issues with some browsers.
Some contributors are not allowed to upload their work because of copyright restrictions but want to have images on their profile as a portfolio of work for job interviews.
There is no clear guidance on how to use ‘Likes’. Some people may reserve their ‘Likes’ for things they find to be of exceptional quality while others choose to ‘Like’ many more than this.
Perhaps we should have some kind of policy statement as there is much confusion as to what’s best to do and what’s not so good.

I am one of the oldest member of Grabcad. There were only 10k people out here. The no. has now grown to 300k but there is hardly any significant change I can find out except the introduction of 3d viewer and private projects. Moreover most of the models uploaded here gets stolen and sold or claimed by some other persons without the knowledge of the original creator. I used to spend more time here rather than FB interacting with different engineers. Many of such scenarios has changed. I hardly visit the website now. Though the other reasons being I have been quite busy with my university curriculum but Grabcad since a few months have not motivated me much. Something has to be done to save this awesome engineers specific networking website.

I agree with a lot thats been said here but you have to remember some people are not in the position to get professional training and yes may post renders but its about gaining confidence in your own work to say,I'm really proud of what I produced I will upload all my files, and failing that if somebody wants the files 'just ask as your more than welcome,I dont agree with stealing other peoples work and putting your name on it,thats just low!Their is an image issue with some people but you will always have that,I use this site to set goals for myself and to ask professionals if I'm stuck,I want to get somewhere with what I do and this site will inspire at times and make you worry at others, will I achieve my goals, its hard to teach yourself if you have 3 young kids and I thank the world that its here, yes it has gremlins but everything comes right over time, just have to be positive and ignore the negatives, thanks to all who have helped and the friends with great advice, its worth it for that alone, theirs a lot of genuine folks out there who try to give good advice to those starting out!

Hey David, this is an open and free website which is accessible from all around the world. do you think that all of them are here to share their work?

Absolutely not, Maybe 10% or less are contributing to this website and the rest are either non active members who login from time to time or random visitors who just found something they need in this website such as lazy students.

if you don't like to share your work in the public domain because of what you said, then you can share it with a smaller group of members who you think are worth sharing with.

As for Grabcad team, I totally agree with you, they are not doing well in terms of thanking and awarding members for their contributions. even some of the challenges winners were not acknowledged.

I agree with some extent.. Even I think people download because they liked your cad work...Then why not make like compulsory for everyone who downloads it!!

GrabCAD is great. Of course there are freeloaders. I am occasionally annoyed by render only files. The only real problem I see is silhouettes of naked women popping up in searches. What do they have to do with CAD. Take them down!!

I love this site. I don't upload my models because I want the recognition, as clearly some people do, but because I have fun modeling the parts, coming up with designs, and I enjoy helping others. If someone can use one of my models in their design, great! If they give me a like, great, if not, well no worries. Just enjoy.

I don't think this site has gone down hill, although I have not been on here that long. I have one project where all I have uploaded so far is renders to keep people updated with the progress of the design. The models are not ready to be uploaded and at least it gives people something to look at.

To me this is about having fun and helping others enjoy it as well.

What has to be taken into account as well is a lot work is done for payment as it's an industry and your not always ion the postion to share those files,in an ideal world yes youd love to share everything you do but thats not always the case as its not your say.
