cam designing is important, make sure its one piece, smooth and solid, and dn have any wrinkles or sharp raises or falls, in short "its made using the cam design rules" or solidworks will give error in cam mate in the assembly, use any theory of machines book to design the cam and the follower,

for mating, before adding the cam mate make sure cam has only ONE DOF! ie its rotational plane,, and the follower too, reciprocating motion only, then add the cam mate..,, it works fine,, if get stuck somewhere post a comment
