How do I copy Solidworks Assemblies from one folder to another and rename top level and components, but it still opens up the original assembly every time. Even after I break references, It is still connected somehow.

I am having trouble after I copy whole Solidworks assemblies and the components from one folder to another because I am building big enclosures, but the sizes change, but use a lot of the same components. I make it fit to different switchgear on each enclosure, thats why I dont do multiple configurations, But I start out by saving my assembly using "SAVE AS COPY AND CONTINUE" Then I go to the new folder and open the copied assembly and once I open, I rename and save to my new number. but even after that if I close everything and go back and open my copied assembly, it will still open the original assembly I copied. So after I end up making changes and such I go back to my original assembly (the one I copied) and it has a ton of errors from where I changed my new assembly, even though all file names are different. What can I do? I believe the "SAVE AS COPY AND CONTINUE" is the right thing to do, but I am not sure.

It seems like you might be making things more complicated than necessary. To create a new assembly similar to the original, I usually use the "save as copy" function. Regardless of whether I decide to proceed with the process or not, the outcome remains the same. Both files contain the same assembly with the same parts. If there is only one element that needs to be different, I modify it and save it with the same name as the original with a different configuration. Alternatively, I save it as a new part and make the necessary modifications afterwards. If I need to use the same part multiple times, I make sure it is the same part without any changes. Ultimately, there shouldn't be any issues with a single assembly.

Pack n go is a safe way before it may mess up your original assembly. when you do pack n go, make sure to add the name(s) in the two prefx and sufix boxes and then click on the to bar of the original file location so that it will update the new name for the rest of the components.
